Apple posted an ad to its official YouTube channel yesterday highlighting a new Portrait Lighting shooting mode on iPhone 8 Plus. Portrait Lighting simulates professional studio lighting with a shallow depth-of-field effect in five different lighting styles.

“Portrait Lighting on iPhone 8 Plus lets you create dramatic studio lighting effects in Portrait mode,” reads the video’s description.
Apple says Portrait Lighting is based on “extensive research into the art and science of portraiture and core photographic lighting principles.” This mode takes advantage of the dual cameras, the Apple-designed image signal processor, the A11 Bionic chip and machine learning to recognize the scene, create a depth map and separate the subject from the background.
