Chrome 54 for Mac is out, replaces old Flash-based YouTube embeds with HTML5 player

Google stopped using Adobe Flash for YouTube's desktop video player back in January 2016, replacing it with an HTML5 counterpart that doesn't require any special browser plug-in to function.

Last evening saw the release of Chrome 54 for Mac, Windows and Linux which continues on Google's mission to ditch Flash in favor of HTML5: the new version replaces old Flash-based YouTube embeds on websites with HTML5.

You can now stream Facebook videos to your TV while browsing your News Feed

Facebook today announced that users of its mobile app for the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch can take advantage of some newly expanded options that let them stream any native video from Facebook to their television through devices like the Apple TV or Google's Chromecast HDMI dongle.

Wait, haven't we always had the ability to stream any video from an iOS device to the Apple TV or an AirPlay-enabled device via Apple's AirPlay feature?

Yes, but this is different in that you can watch Facebook videos on the big screen while browsing the News Feed on the device you're streaming at the same time.

Periscope update brings camera and sharing improvements & more

Periscope, Twitter's live video-streaming app, has been refreshed in the App Store this morning with a few new features related to in-app camera, sharing and more. For starters, you'll notice improved tap-to-focus while broadcasting live video, plus you can now follow a broadcaster from the viewers list with one tap. There are also improvements to Persicope's VIP Program and more.

Video: all iPhone sapphire lenses scratch tested

As you may know, Apple's marketing boss Phil Schiller recently insisted that rumors of the iPhone 7's Home button and camera lens not being covered in pure sapphire were false. However, YouTuber JerryRigEverything has found that these parts do leave scratch marks at a level six on the Mohs scale of hardness, which is odd given that pure sapphire crystal should sustain scratches up to a level nine.

Apple on its website states that all of the iPhones it currently sells offer sapphire protection for the Touch ID sensor and iSight camera, which doesn't explain why these parts appear to scratch more easily than they should.

Could Apple be using a sapphire/glass hybrid or even a normal tempered glass rather than a 100 percent sapphire crystal? That's what JerryRigEverything set out to find in a comprehensive scratch test video of the iPhone SE/6/6s/7 series.

Latest 4K drone flyovers show off iSpaceship facade glowing at night & more

A pair of new flyover videos from YouTubers Duncan Sinfield and Matthew Roberts reveal that Apple has installed exterior lights at Apple Campus 2 site, showing the iSpaceship building facade glowing at night. It's quite a spectacular sight given the enormous scale of the flying saucer-shaped structure.

Apple Campus 2, as it's officially called, will become home to more than 12,000 employees when it's completed some time in early 2017.

Apple airs new ‘Balloons’ ad highlighting iPhone 7 and expressive messaging

Apple's much improved Messages app in iOS 10 is more expressive than ever, especially with nicely done animations that take over the entire screen.

One of the fullscreen effects in Messages, a bunch of balloons that fly up from the bottom of the screen, is the central theme of a new iPhone 7 commercial that Apple posted on its YouTube channel today.

The 30-second commercial wraps up with the message, “The all-new iPhone 7, with expressive messages. Practically magic.”

No, you should not drill a hole in your iPhone 7

Unbelievably, some of the techies I spoke to believe that maybe, somehow, the 3.5mm headphone jack will make a comeback in the next year's iPhone. That ship has sailed, of course, but that's not stopping pranksters and jokers on YouTube from milking the headphone jack meme for all it's worth, like a video titled “Secret Hack To Get Headphone Jack on the iPhone 7” from YouTuber TechRax.

In it, TechRax suggests that users drill a hole in their brand spanking new iPhone 7 in order to access a supposedly hidden headphone jack inside the device.

Google announces YouTube Go app for watching and sharing videos without using any data

The annual “Google for India” event kicked off in New Delhi this morning, where the search company announced a new mobile app called YouTube Go.

Inspired by India for the next billion users, it's designed to help people in areas with poor connectivity watch and share YouTube videos without burning up mobile data.

YouTube Go provides controls not found in the regular app to let users see the file size of videos before they download them to the device for offline viewing. And to save data, the app presents clips as slideshows.

How to use Picture-in-Picture for YouTube videos on your Mac

macOS Sierra was just released with a flurry of new features, one of them being the ability to watch videos in a new mode called Picture-in-Picture. When enabled, this allows you to detach a video from its player, and place it anywhere in a resizable window on your screen. This is particularly handy if you want to watch a video while working, for instance.

While the majority of video players you will encounter will already support Picture-in-Picture, there are a few rebels out there that still don't, and YouTube is one of them. Fortunately, there is a simple workaround for this.

Top 20 iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus features [Video]

The iPhone 7 has finally started arriving in (some) people's hands merely two week after being unveiled. It wasn't the full-blown makeover many people had hoped for but there are lots of notable changes to Apple's flagship phone.

In our video overview, I take a look at 20 of the top new features for Apple iPhone 7. Some are major upgrades, like the iPhone 7 Plus's dual camera setup, while others are small and easy to overlook like the wider color gamut on the Retina Display.

Video: iPhone 7 running circles around Note 7 in terms of switching apps

Apple makes the fastest smartphone chips on the planet and the iPhone 7's in-house designed A10 Fusion chip has given top Android handset makers who buy off-the-shelf processors plenty to worry about. Tight interplay between Apple-designed silicon, operating system, apps and services gives the iPhone a distinct advantage over competitors when it comes to smooth app switching and multitasking.

A non-scientific video put together by YouTuber PhoneBuff, which compares app loading and switching times on the iPhone 7 and Samsung's latest Note 7, highlights the benefits of designing the hardware and software under one roof as Apple's new phone with half the Note 7's RAM runs circles around Samsung's exploding flagship in terms of loading and switching apps.

James Corden pitches commercial ideas in new Apple Music ad

Apple on Sunday night aired a new Apple Music ad during the 2016 Emmy Awards starring "Late Late Show" host James Corden. The spot is called "The all-new Apple Music," and it highlights the content and discovery features of the company's streaming service.

In the humorous clip, Corden pitches Apple Music commercial ideas to executives Jimmy Iovine, Eddy Cue and Bozoma Saint John. As you can imagine, most of Corden's concepts are off-the-wall, and in the end the team decides the collaboration isn't going to work.
