Tumblr update adds new user mentions feature, notifications and more

Good news for Tumblr users this afternoon. The micro-blogging site has posted an update for its iOS client, bringing the app to version 3.5.3. The update brings about a handful of improvements, and a major new user mentions feature.

Mentions work on Tumblr just like they do on other social networks. Typing '@' and a username when you’re writing a post will generate a link to that person's blog and push an alert to that person letting them know they were mentioned...

Tumblr redesigns iPhone and iPad app for iOS 7

Tumblr, the popular blogging platform that Yahoo acquired for north of $1 billion earlier in the year, has won me over with its sleek little iOS app.

I'm sure the millions of mobile bloggers would agree that Tumblr for iPhone lets really just about anyone publish their own news stories, images, videos and other content in just a few taps, without too much hassle or messing with complicated CMSs.

Though Tumblr wasn't immediately updated for the new iOS 7 look following the software's September 18 release, today's refresh has seen to that. Tumblr for iPhone and iPad has been bumped to version 3.5 and the biggest news is of course the revamped user interface which now follows overall aesthetics and animations of Apple's latest mobile OS.

As the saying goes, that's not all for Tumblr now has a few new tricks up its sleeve that allow for even easier mobile blogging. As per usual, I've included a few nice screenies along with some highlights after the break...

Apparently the popular micro-blogging service was recently made aware of a major security issue, which in some cases allowed user passwords to be compromised. So it's urging users to download this 'very important' update...

And all of these enhancements have to do with search and discovery. Users can now search for specific tags and blogs, or explore various trending tags and blogs, right from within the mobile Tumblr application...

It's been a big day for the folks over at Tumblr. Earlier this morning, the microblogging network confirmed the weekend's speculation that it is has agreed to an acquisition deal with Yahoo!, said to be worth over $1 billion.

And shortly after the news was revealed, an update for Tumblr's iOS app posted in the App Store. The update, which brings the app to version 3.3.2, includes a handful of bug fixes and improvements, and a shiny new interface...

Yahoo buys blogging platform Tumblr for $1.1 billion

Yahoo's recently-minted CEO Marissa Mayer has gone on a shopping spree. After the troubled Internet giant in March bought mobile news startup Summly for $30 million, and having snapped up the iOS/Android task management service Astrid earlier this month, Yahoo this morning announced a definitive agreement to acquire Tumblr for $1.1 billion. Yahoo promised "not to screw it up" and operate Tumblr independently as a separate business, keeping its founder David Karp as the CEO.

More than fifty billion posts (75 million more arriving each day) are hosted on Tumblr so this acquisition is bound to significantly bolster Yahoo's content empire...

Tumblr is the home to over a hundred million blogs that have published nearly 50 billion posts. In between blogging for a living here on iDB, checking out new gadgets and just leading an ordinary life, I have little time to maintain a personal blog. Good news today for all of you Tumblr users. The popular microblogging platform has finally updated its iOS app to work natively on the iPad. Previously, if you wanted to access your Tumblr blog, or view the work of others, from your tablet, you either had to use the website, a third-party application, or the official iOS app in 2X mode. But not anymore...
