Tim Cook: mobile payments ‘one of the thoughts behind Touch ID’

Apple just finished up its quarterly earnings call a few hours ago where it offered up sales numbers for the holiday quarter, forecasts for next quarter, and everything in between. Tim Cook even fielded some questions from overly-eager analysts.

While most of these questions were fairly dull, there were a handful of them worth noting, including one about Apple's plans for the mobile payment space. Obviously Cook wouldn't answer the query directly, but his response was rather interesting...

Rounding out Apple's celebration of the Mac's 30th anniversary on Friday, ABC aired an interview between its own David Muir and CEO Tim Cook. Senior VP Craig Federighi and VP Bud Tribble were also on hand, but Cook did most of the talking.

It was a short discussion, running for less than 5 minutes, and some of it has already been spoiled by preview clips. But for those who haven't seen it, it's worth watching, as Cook speaks out about major issues such as the recent NSA surveillance scare...

Continuing with the festivities for the Macintosh's 30th anniversary, ABC News is set to air an interview with Apple CEO Tim Cook on its World News program with Diane Sawyer tomorrow evening.

Few details are known, except that the interview will be between ABC's David Muir and Cook, and will air tomorrow at 6:30PM EST. And a preview of the interview will air on Good Morning America...

Even better, Cook shared the spotlight with China Mobile Chairman Xi Guohua, who revealed that the carrier had netted 1.2 million total preorders for the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c as of January 13, ahead of the impending launch this coming Friday. That's 60,000 iPhones per day on average since December 25, 2013.

Apple and Samsung again discussing patent dispute settlement

Apple and Samsung are said to again be conferring over a possible settlement to their years-long patent dispute. According to a new report, the two companies are in "working level discussions" regarding a potential deal.
