Tim Cook talks Apple, equality and more in Auburn Lifetime Achievement Award speech

Apple's CEO Tim Cook was presented a lifetime achievement award from Auburn University at an event last week in New York. Cook graduated from the Alabama-based university in 1982 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Engineering.

The CEO was of course on hand to accept the award, and as usual, gave quite the speech. We've got the video of the speech after the fold, where you can watch Cook talk about Apple, the progression of human equality in the United States, and more...

Fortune names Apple’s head of retail Angela Ahrendts #4 in 2013 list of top executives

Last month, Apple announced that it had finally found its new head of retail after nearly a year of searching. Her name is Angela Ahrendts, the current CEO of British fashion house Burberry, and she's believed by many to be a great choice.

And apparently Fortune agrees. The business news outlet has named Ahrendts #4 in its 2013 list of top executives. The list is an annual affair, and is filled with execs who defied expectations, led big turnarounds, and delivered big results...

Tim Cook issues Business Conduct Policy video message to employees

In an unusual move yesterday, Apple CEO Tim Cook reached out to company employees via a video message urging them to familiarize themselves with Apple's Business Conduct Policy. The message, posted to Apple's internal system, quotes Dr. Martin Luther King Jr saying “The time is always right to do what is right” in order to encourage employees to speak up about conduct that may violate Apple's policy.

Along with the video message, employees also received an email from Apple's top lawyer who goes on to reiterate Apple’s core values of honesty, respect, confidentiality, and the "critical obligation of every Apple employee to adhere to legal principles", such as antitrust and anti-corruption laws.

Apple has even put together a new code of conduct iBook for employees with multimedia content including galleries, video, audio and multitouch widgets. The full message is right after the break...

Tim Cook urges Congress to approve Employment Nondiscrimination Act in open letter

In a rare occurrence, Tim Cook has spoken out in support of the pending Employment Nondiscrimination Act. The CEO penned an open letter, which ran in the Opinion section of The Wall Street Journal last night, urging Congress to approve the END Act.

The legislation would prohibit a number of civilian, non-religious companies in the US from discriminating on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity. And in his letter, Cook explains that a safe welcoming work environment is good for business...

Apple never meant for the iPhone 5c to be an entry-level phone

We're continuing to dig through our notes from Apple's earnings call earlier this afternoon, as a lot of stuff was discussed during the 1-hour broadcast. In addition to financials, Cook and co. offered up some great insight into their operations.

We've already mentioned a few interesting tidbits, and we've just come across another in a comment from Tim Cook on the iPhone 5c. As we've said a few times now, Cook confirms that Apple never intended the 5c to be an entry-level phone...

Cook to troops: we’ve never been stronger

Rallying up the troops, Apple's boss Tim Cook has shot an email to all Apple employees, hot on the heels of the company's strong September quarter earnings report. As collaboration is now a recurring theme at Apple, Cook has made point of expressing his pride with the collaborative effort that has gone into Apple's latest products.

Apple “has never been stronger" as a result of tighter collaboration between the teams across the company, he remarked. He'll be addressing employees in a company-wide meeting tomorrow, which will be broadcast to Apple's teams across the globe. I've got the full contents of Cook's email memo right below...

Apple may be unable to cope with Retina iPad mini demand, says Cook

In addition to the iPad's outstanding (yet perfectly plausible) 94 percent share in education (bonus: other amazing stats), Apple's boss Tim Cook cautioned Wall Street analysts and investors on an earnings call that not everyone may get their hands on an iPad mini with Retina display when it starts shipping in late-November.

It gets worse: he wasn't confident in Apple's ability to make enough Retina iPad minis to satisfy Christmas quarter demand either...

Tim Cook: new product categories coming in 2014

The last two months have been very busy for Apple, as the company has refreshed a number of its devices including the iPhone, iPad, the MacBook Pro and Mac Pro. But missing from the fall's festivities was an all-new product.

The good news, though, is that it appears at least one is on the way. During its quarterly earnings call today, Tim Cook said Apple believes it has the skills to create 'great products' in categories it's not currently participating in...

Microsoft on the defensive: Apple’s free iWork productivity suite is ‘no big deal’

There's nothing like a good dogfight between two tech titans to get your blood flowing. After a hiatus from its sniping at Apple, Microsoft is back, calling the decision to offer iWork and iLife software free "no big deal". Sure Microsoft, whatever you say.

But Redmond didn't stop there. In a Wednesday blog post, the software giant's communication vice president paints Apple's move as desperate, before launching into a rally-round-the-flag sort of promo for the new Surface tablet.

All of which reminds me of the Hamlet quote about protesting too much...

Tim Cook joins board of China’s top Beijing university

As China becomes more important to Apple's bottom line, the iPhone maker will need to grease the wheels to ensure products are timely approved. In a step in that direction, Apple CEO Tim Cook has joined the advisory board of a prestigious engineering university - which also happens to include a number of prominent Chinese politicians.

Cook, who is also a Nike board member, has added his name to a panel assisting Tsinghua University's School of Economics and Management (SEM), according to a report. As markets such as North America and Western Europe mature and growth slows, tech companies like Apple view China as a way to take up the slack...

Tim Cook issues email to troops commenting on Apple’s new SVP of Retail

In a surprising late-night press release, Apple said it's finally found its new retail chief. In case you missed it, soon-to-be-former CEO of clothing retailer Burberry will be joining the iPhone maker as its new SVP of Retail, responsible for both Apple's online and offline stores and retail operations across the world.

Today, CEO Tim Cook issued a memo to Apple employees explaining why Angela - after John Browett's much maligned and short stint as Ron Johnson's replacement - is "the best person in the world for this role"...

Apple seeks expert in China Mobile’s TD-LTE ahead of iPhone deal

Apple is a bit like a black hole: only by detecting its effect on nearby objects can observers discern its real intention. The latest clue to Apple's China card is a job posting seeking a networking expert in a technology only used by China Mobile. The engineer would be based in Beijing, supporting China Mobile's 3G technology TD-SCDMA, as well as TD-LTE, which the world's largest carrier is testing.

This latest report comes as the iPhone maker supposedly nears a deal with the carrier, which counts 63 percent of China's 1.2 billion wireless consumers among its subscribers. Still, Apple refuses to comment...
