Apple to add system-wide Vimeo and Flickr support in iOS 7

Details regarding iOS 7 are still fairly scarce, despite the fact that WWDC is just a few weeks away. Apple has said that it will be previewing its next-generation mobile operating system at its annual developer conference next month.

We do know a few things though. Most of the rumors suggest iOS 7 will feature a UI overhaul, in favor of a much flatter design. And according to a new report, Apple will also be beefing up social ties with Vimeo and Flickr integration...

Major Pinterest update brings push notifications, mentions and more

Say what you will about Pinterest. But with more than 50 million users, and a staggering $2.5 billion valuation, you can't ignore it. It has become a social networking powerhouse, and it doesn't show any signs of slowing down.

With that being said, the company released a major update for its iOS app today. The update, which brings the app to version 2.4, includes a handful of new features and improvements like push notifications, mentions and more...

Facebook app gains faster Events, better Places editing, souped up photo viewer

The social networking giant Facebook just issued an update to its native Facebook client for iOS devices. In what is the first 'point' update since the major Facebook 6.0 release from a month ago, the new Facebook version 6.1 enhances your experience with three helpful additions.

For starters, your Facebook Events now load faster on the iPhone and iPod touch. And, if you check in to a venue on your iPhone or iPod touch device, you'll notice that Facebook has improved the Places editing experience.

In addition to these two iPhone-specific enhancements, I bet you'll love the improved photo viewer button on both the iPhone and iPad. For more on that, go right past the fold...

Flipboard update brings SMS sharing, revamped profile pages, Friends category

Flipboard, the social news reader for iOS and Android, was updated today with a bevy of features and improvements. The new version includes the SMS sharing option which lets you send story URLs to your friends via text messaging.

Moreover, the app's Share menu has been re-worked for better usability so you can now share content with fewer taps than before.

Another welcomed (and way overdue) feature: if you seen an image you like, Flipboard now finally lets you save it to your Camera roll by tapping its Share icon and tapping 'Save to Camera Roll.' Go past the fold for improvements to Flipboard's custom magazine feature and other tidbits...

LinkedIn updates its Pulse iOS app with new sharing options

LinkedIn, the world's top social network for people in professional occupations, recently purchased the popular news reader Pulse for nearly a hundred million bucks as part of its ongoing efforts to become a media company. Nearly a month following the transaction, LinkedIn has updated Pulse mobile software with the expected LinkedIn sharing. Other new features in Pulse version 3.1 include the much-needed ability to save stories for later reading to such popular read-later services as Pocket, Evernote and Instapaper...

Facebook Messenger updated with Stickers, swipe-to-delete

The social networking giant Facebook today issued an update to its standalone Messenger app for the iPhone and iPod touch. Facebook Messenger version 2.4, available now, has brought out the popular Stickers feature that was rolled out nearly a month ago in the major Facebook iOS client update. And if Stickers are getting on your nerves, perhaps the reappearance of the swipe-to-delete functionality is just what you needed all along? I've included a few more tidbits right below...

CEO defends against Path spamming allegations

The Path controversy just wouldn't die down. Last week, the private social network has gotten itself in hot water (again) by spamming users’ address book contacts with unwanted robocalls and texts, sometimes even after they uninstalled the software from their devices.

It's a feature rather than a bug, but Path’s poorly designed sign-up process tricked unsuspecting users - the types who don't read on-screen prompts carefully - into inadvertently mass-inviting their friends to Path.

And because Path taps extra carrier services, text messages would get turned to landlines into phone calls. None of this seems to aggravate Path CEO Dave Morin, who is a former Facebook employee.

He insisted Monday that Path does not spam users and argued his service never sent mass communication without your consent. "Any allegations to the contrary are false,” Morin said...

Twitter’s Vine gains front-facing camera support and @user mentions

Twitter's Vine, an iOS app that lets you impulse-share short five-second clips, may be struggling to take off, but that's not stopping the popular micro-blogging service from issuing regular updates that add more functionality. One of my main gripes with Vine is its inability to use a front-facing camera.

That omission right there kills some potentially interesting self-portrait videos. No more, as Twitter today issued Vine version 1.1 which adds support for your iPhone's front-facing camera...

Path spamming some with robocalls and texts

Path, the private social network, has had somewhat of a rocky start, to put it mildly.

Just as it seemingly recovered from a privacy scandal which also affected Apple and resulted in tighter iOS privacy controls, reports are surfacing alleging the startup is spamming users' address book contacts with unwanted phone calls and text messages, even after they uninstalled the software from their devices.

Path immediately crafted a non-response confirming an unknown portion of its installed base did fall victim to a glitch in the system...

Angry Birds Friends landing on iOS and Android this Thursday

Finnish mobile games developer Rovio announced earlier in the month plans to bring its social Facebook game, Angry Birds Friends, to iOS and Android devices. Today, developers confirmed on Twitter that Angry Birds Friends will be hitting iOS and Android devices this coming Thursday, May 2, a year following its launch on Facebook in May 2012. The Facebook version now sees 60+ million monthly installs and has over 1.2 million daily users...

Two years later, Twitter updates Mac app with Retina support, nicer design

Just as we've given up hope that Twitter will put any effort into improving its Mac app, the micro-blogging turned media platform on Thursday rather surprisingly issued an update to Twitter for Mac.

In its first major refresh in nearly two years, the application has brought out way overdue support for Retina graphics, along with several design changes and other under-the-hood tweaks.

Twitter for Mac versions 2.2 now comes with a brand new app icon and improves upon the overall iconography. The compose window has been redesigned and the application can now post photos to pic.twitter.com. Read on for other changes...

LinkedIn launches standalone Contacts app

Having acquired the popular news reader Pulse, LinkedIn, the social network for people in professional occupations, recently revamped its iPhone and Android application with a focus on updates, content-rich streams and new navigation options. Today, the team announced a standalone Contacts app, now available free on the App Store.

"A smarter way to stay in touch with your most important relationships," the new Contacts service is also available on LinkedIn.com, bringing all your contacts from your Google, Yahoo, Microsoft and other address books. Additionally, the application integrates with your email accounts and calendars...
