Major Pinterest update brings push notifications, mentions and more

Say what you will about Pinterest. But with more than 50 million users, and a staggering $2.5 billion valuation, you can’t ignore it. It has become a social networking powerhouse, and it doesn’t show any signs of slowing down.

With that being said, the company released a major update for its iOS app today. The update, which brings the app to version 2.4, includes a handful of new features and improvements like push notifications, mentions and more…

Here’s the full 2.4 change log:

– Send a pin to someone (iPhone & iPod only)
– Get push notifications to know when someone comments, likes or repins your stuff
– Search…and you shall receive suggestions
– Invite friends to pin with you on group boards
– Easily pin from the web
– Mention your friends in comments

The list may be small, but the changes are huge. For instance, you’ll now receive a push notification any time someone comments on, likes or repins one of your pins. You can also now send your favorite pins to friends with iOS devices.

Perhaps my favorite improvement, though, has to do with search. It’s now much easier to discover new content on Pinterest thanks to new search-inspired suggestions. For example, searching for ‘Cake’ brings up cake recipes, mixes, etc.

I think today’s update is a solid improvement over the last iteration of the app. So even if you’re not an avid user, it’s worth downloading. As always, you can find the Pinterest app, for both the iPhone and iPad, in the App Store for free.
