The Wall Street Journal Reveals Details on Apple’s Upcoming TV Set

Rumors of a secret Apple TV set project have been really heating up over the past few months. Word on the street has been that the iPhone-makers are looking to jump into the TV-making business, and the company's first entry could revolutionize the industry.

We've heard a few whispers regarding the set's features, including multiple screen sizes ranging from 32-inches to 55-inches, Siri voice control, and deep AirPlay integration. And now we have even more details thanks to a report by The Wall Street Journal.

Rumor: Apple to Release 8-Inch Tablet in 2012

It's not even January and we are already hearing iPad rumors on an almost-daily basis. Yesterday we told you about the purported "leaked" iPad 3 microphone component that recently surfaced on the web.

While admittedly "leaked" parts are rarely anything to get excited about, the gossip we have for you today is quite interesting. Apparently, the word on the street in China is that Apple is looking to get into the 8-inch tablet game sometime next year...

Rumor: Leaked iPad 3 Microphone Points to Possible Redesign

If there is one thing with more leaks than a broken sink, it has to be the iOS device parts industry. No big iPhone or iPad release goes by without at least one of its various internal parts leaking out of one of Apple's manufacturing partners.

The rumored iPad 3 is no different, with photographs of one such part leaking out via Cydia Blog. The part, reportedly an iPad 3 microphone flex cable, is currently available for purchase from TVC-Mall along with two other supposed iPad 3 parts which leaked earlier this year.

Google Working On Siri Clone Codenamed “Majel”

Google is reportedly working on its own version of Siri for upcoming Android devices. The project has been given the internal codename of "Majel" (a reference to Majel Barrett-Roddenberry, the Federation Computer from Star Trek) and is meant to be an evolution of the current voice recognition technology in Android, Voice Actions.

Siri is by far the iPhone 4S's hottest feature, and Apple has used marketing to put itself in the lead once again with the rest of the industry now forced to play catch-up. Will Google's upcoming assistant be the competition that Siri needs?

Latest iOS Beta Easter Egg Fools Us All With Fake Apple Product References

You have got to love Apple's sense of humor. The folks in Cupertino have left a nice easter egg in the latest iOS 5.1 beta. 9to5Mac's Mark Gurman went looking inside the 5.1 beta 2's .plist files and came across something that made us chuckle.

Apple knows how the blogosphere works, and the rumor mill typically predicts future product names based off internal references in iOS beta SDKs. It looks like we all just hit the jackpot.

Rumor: Next-Gen iPad Expected to Arrive in 3-4 Months

It seems like we just got done with all of the iPhone 4S/5 gossip, and now we're already hearing tons of chatter regarding Apple's next big product release: the iPad 3. It's to be expected, as Apple's second-generation tablet is nearing the end of its life cycle.

The latest tidbit comes from DigiTimes, a Taiwanese daily newspaper with a laundry list of supply chain contacts and a history of breaking Apple-related news. The publication is reporting that manufacturers are already receiving parts for the new iPad.

Apple Looking to Expand Bluetooth Support in iOS

Other than a handful of stereo receivers and standalone speakers, there aren't many AirPlay-compatible accessories on the market. Manufacturers haven't really adopted Apple's wireless technology like the company had hoped it would.

So it's no surprise that Macotakara, a Japanese blog known for leaking Apple information, is reporting that the company is looking to rethink wireless connectivity in iOS. The company is now apparently showing a deep interest in Bluetooth.

TV Industry Scrambling to Beat Apple to the Punch

The rumor mill can be fairly accurate when it comes to predicting major Apple products. There was tons of gossip regarding an Apple smartphone for at least a year leading up to the iPhone announcement. And the same goes with iPad rumors.

Manufacturers, for some reason, have always ignored the chatter surrounding Apple rumors. But it looks like the folks in the TV industry aren't going to make that mistake this time around, as reports are coming in that TV-makers are already working on implementing voice control technology to beat Apple to the punch.

Samsung Working on Retina Display-Equipped iPad Competitor

If Apple wasn't looking to use Retina displays in its upcoming tablet before, you better believe it is now. BGR is reporting that Samsung is looking to beat the iPad 3 to market next year with an 11-inch tablet that will feature an all new Retina display.

Rumors of Apple's third generation slate, expected sometime early next year, housing a display with Retina-like resolution have been flying about for the past few months. But recent reports of manufacturing problems seem to have suppressed the gossip...

Rumor: Retina Display iPad to Launch in February

Citi analyst Richard Gardner claims in a note to clients today that the iPad 3 (or whatever its name may be) will launch in February of 2012 and will feature a Retina display:

According to "several sources" the next iPad will launch in February, and it will sport a screen with double the resolution of the current model.

As usual, these analysts' predictions should be taken with a grain of salt, as they rarely rely on any evidence. But looking at the past two years, it seems clear that the next iPad will probably launch between February and April.

Rumor: Next iMac Will Have Built-In Apple TV

Wedge Partners analyst Brian Blair chimes in on the Apple TV rumors by sharing his own predictions. According to Blair, the next-generation iMac for 2012 will integrate the Apple TV and iCloud, turning it into a personal computer with TV capabilities. Blair says:

“We think this makes sense because while we typically think about the newest TV’s hanging on the wall in large form factors, Apple could effectively start with what they already have on the manufacturing line and slowly push their offering from 27 inches and scale up from there to 32 inches and then move on to the 42, 50 and 55 inch market,” he writes. “In short, we believe the initial Apple TV is their iMac computer that can function as a TV, over the iCloud platform.”

I fail to see the practicality of a Mac/TV, but who knows? What do you think?

Rumor: Apple Television Set for Next Year, Ranging in Sizes From 32″ to 55″

Analysts, investors, and tech pundits have been predicting an Apple-flavored TV set for quite some time now. It seems like everyone wants to see the company do for televisions, what it has for smartphones and tablets.

We've heard all kinds of gossip regarding the rumored television set — everything from integrated Siri voice control to built-in iCloud and App Store support. But this is the first time we've heard specific details on the hardware...
