Warhammer Quest goes free as Apple’s new App of the Week

Like every Thursday, Apple yesterday refreshed the App Store's ongoing Free App of the Week promotion.

The company's been running this promotion for months now and we've seen both must-have and mediocre apps and games go free in Apple's continuing mission to boost downloads by giving cherry-picked titles additional exposure. Warhammer Quest by Rodeo Games and Games Workshop is the latest title to go free for a week.

Previously costing five bucks and now available free of charge until next Thursday, this dungeon-based game will win you over with its addictive mix of role-playing and strategy elements.

Released ten months ago, this iOS adaptation is set in the Warhammer world and stays true to the original in looks and design. The game involves hundreds of weapons, armors and items and - yes - challenges you to battle through the legions of orcs, goblins, skavens and other creatures...

Baldurs Gate II: Enhanced Edition arrives on iPad

The official sequel to BioWare’s classic role-playing game set in the Dungeons & Dragons universe, Baldur's Gate, has just launched for the iPad and is now available to download from the App Store, priced at $14.99.

Basically a 21st century version of the original 2000 release, Baldurs Gate II: Enhanced Edition includes new party members, a seamless multiplayer mode, a bunch of expansions packs such as the Throne of Bhaal and Shadows of Amn, a new combat mission titled The Black Pits 2: Gladiators of Thay as well as a host of other goodies...

Baldur’s Gate II: Enhanced Edition is coming to iOS

Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition, BioWare’s classic role-playing game set in the Dungeons & Dragons universe, launched on the App Store last December combining the original Baldur’s Gate game, the Tales From the Sword Coast expansion pack, an additional monk character, a new ‘Black Pits’ adventure and lost more content.

The game was yanked from the App Store a few months later due to a number of contractual issues with published Beamdog. It has since returned to the App Store as those problems had been resolved in a mutually satisfactory manner and now we're hearing that the official sequel, Baldur’s Gate II: Enhanced Edition, will launch on the iPhone and Android later this year...

EA jumps on the RPG bandwagon: Heroes Of Dragon Age coming this Fall

Role-playing games are seemingly becoming all the rage on mobile. Following last December's release of BioWare's Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition and Guild Software’s MMORPG Vendetta Online launch earlier in the year, some of the biggest names in gaming have taken notice of the trend.

For example, Wizards of the Coast just announced the impending release of Arena Of War for the iPhone, iPad and Android devices, their first D&D mobile game set in the fabled Forgotten Realms universe.

Not content with sitting on the sidelines and watching others monetize RPG fans, publisher Electronic Arts has tapped developer BioWare to deliver Heroes of Dragon Age, basically a combat-focused spinoff of the famous Dragon Age series...

Gemini Rue makes its way to iOS, and it feels like old times

Point-and-click adventures are beginning to make a dent in the gaming community. There have been some well-made releases within the past few months that have certainly sparked my interest. Abyss: the Wraiths of Eden HD, for example, had me sweaty palmed and stiff necked from hours of gameplay. The more often developers port desktop games to iOS, the better it is for me because I like being able to pick up and play epic adventures anywhere.

You may have already heard of Gemini Rue. It was originally created for Windows in 2011 and was just ported to iOS a week ago. The game may only be a few years old, but it has a retro design that will put you in pixilated heaven from the first beat.

Gemini Rue, for the iPhone and iPad, takes players on a noir-like adventure set on a mining planet in a future where citizens must prove their residency or be deported off world. The game’s plot develops slowly and deliberately. One false move and you’ll be pushing up daisies...

MMORPG Vendetta Online previewed on iPad

Guild Software's sci-fi MMORPG Vendetta Online has been available on Android, Linux, Mac and Windows (RT included) since 2004. It's coming soon to iOS, with the first public iPad preview having launched today on Kickstarter. Guild Software's John Bergman explains that the team is planning on shipping the iPad build "as soon as we can" before fully focusing their attention on gameplay enhancements. The video demonstration runs on a prototype build running on an iPad 2 connected over Wi-Fi...

I'd spent countless hours playing BioWare's Baldur's Gate back when I was a little younger so it goes without saying I'm pretty excited about a re-worked, enhanced edition landing on my favorite tablet. Developer Beamdog did a nice job updating the classic role-playing game with a bunch of new characters, weapons, adventures and maps. Even more content is available via the in-app purchase method.

The game includes the original Baldur’s Gate and the Tales From the Sword Coast expansion pack, in addition to new content like a monk character named Rasaad yn Bashir, a new adventure called The Black Pits and more. Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition can be purchased immediately from the App Store provided you're willing to plunk down ten bucks...
