Apple honors World AIDS Day with (RED) apps, products, accessories and more

Apple logos on the company's retail stores around the world have turned bright red today, and that means one thing: it's honoring the World AIDS Day. In the App Store, Apple and (RED) joined forces with developer Supercell, with 100 percent of proceeds from customers who buy (RED) packs for Supercell's games going to the Global Fund to fight AIDS.

And via its homepage at Apple.com, the company is inviting customers to help the initiative by purchasing (RED)-branded products like Macs, iPhones, iPads, iPods, Watches and accessories such as Beats headphones, the Smart Cover for the iPad Air and the Smart Case for the iPad Air 2.

Rumor: major MacBook Air redesign due in 2016, new 15″ model in tow

Apple's MacBook Air notebook is rumored to receive a thorough redesign next year alongside a brand new fifteen-inch model introduction, according to a report Monday by Economic Daily News.

The thinner, faster machine is thought to be up for an official introduction at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference in the summer of 2016.

If true, it will mark the first major facelift of Apple's MacBook Air notebook since its debut eight years ago.

Black Friday deal for movie lovers: four blockbuster Mac apps for the price of one

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone in the United States! And what better way to celebrate this holiday than a not-to-be-missed deal that offers some substantial value for your hard earned cash.

You've probably heard of a Mac developer called Softorino, no? They're behind Waltr, a super fast Mac app that makes converting any video into an iOS-friendly file format a simple drag-and-drop affair.

As it happens, Softorino has teamed up with other developers from different parts of the world to bundle four powerful Mac applications at 73 percent off for just $24.95.

All four apps in Blockbuster Kit were created specifically with movie buffs in mind and are well-known to Mac fans: Global Delight's Boom 2, Ben Lenarts and Eelco Lempsink's Beamer 3, Eltima's Elmedia Player Pro and Softorino's own Waltr. These apps regularly retail for a total of $90 so you're looking at some substantial savings here.

Leo's Fortune, a gorgeous action platformer with beautiful artwork that debuted on the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad in April of 2014, is now available on the Mac.

A $6.99 download from the Mac App Store, this premium title is free of advertisements and In-App Purchases. Leo's Fortune has won numerous awards and is one of the best platform games available on any platform.

Our own Lory Gill called it arguably the most gorgeous iOS platformer she has played in a while, writing in her review that fans of platform games should pick up Leo's Fortune in a heartbeat.

10 reasons why the iPad Pro might be a better computer than your Mac

In my review of the iPad Pro, I made sure to establish that it wasn’t necessarily a replacement for your Mac. At the same time, that doesn’t mean that it can’t replace your Mac, or that it doesn’t do some things better than a Mac can.

To be honest, the iPad Pro does quite a few things better than my MacBook Pro with Retina display. In this post, I’ll consider 10 reasons why the iPad Pro might be the better computer of the two for your workflow.

WordPress launches native Mac app

If you blog in any capacity at all, chances are you're on WordPress, the world's top blogging platform that now powers one out of each four websites on the Internet. Automatic, the company behind WordPress, has been updating its mobile blogging app on a regular basis and today they're introducing a brand new WordPress for Mac app.

Billed as “a new way to write,” the free app lets you manage, edit and publish content to your WordPress-hosted or self-hosted sites and WordPress VIP ones.

The Mac app is available now alongside a thorough redesign of wordpress.com, both of which are also going open-source today with the launch.

Fix “Fetching” delay when selecting “Open With” on Mac

In my mind, computers are always supposed to work the way they should. And because they are computers, I shouldn't have to wait for them to process basic tasks. That's all in my mind of course, because in reality, things don't always go the way they should.

A perfect example of that is the Open With menu you get when right clicking on a file. Sometimes, for no apparent reason, my iMac will spend several seconds "fetching" the applications that can be used to open that specific file type.

Like with most things computer-related, the fix is pretty simple.

Spark for iPhone adds Exchange support, iPad and Mac version in the works

Readdle's incredibly efficient (and free) email client, Spark for iPhone, has just gotten a whole lot more useful with full support for Microsoft Exchange accounts in the latest update in the App Store.

This was the main feature request from thousands of people who wanted to use Spark with Exchange in the workplace, developers tell me.

Even more exciting than that, the team has confirmed that they're hard at work putting finishing touches on Spark for iPad, which should be released “soon”. In addition, a spokesperson for the company tells me via email that their next step will be “creating the best email client for Mac.”

Tweetbot for Mac updated for El Capitan’s Split View multitasking and more

The Mac edition of Tweetbot, Tapbots' popular Twitter client, has received an update this morning in the Mac App Store. The refreshed app now supports El Capitan's Split View multitasking mode and can be taken to OS X's native full screen mode as well.

With design refinements made to match Tweetbot 4 for iOS, this edition of Tweetbot for Mac also brings out muting changes and introduces an overahuled tweet details view that now shows conversation and replies in the same order as its iOS counterpart.

Apple seeds OS X 10.11.2 beta 4 to developers and public testers

Apple on Tuesday released the fourth beta of OS X El Capitan 10.11.2. The update is labeled build 15C47a, and is available to developers and public testers via the Updates section of the Mac App Store, or through Apple’s beta test site.

Today’s release comes just one week after Apple pushed out beta 3 of OS X 10.11.2, suggesting the firmware is nearing completion, and it has been nearly a month since the last public update to OS X (10.11.1), which added 150 new emoji.
