Add widgets to your Home screen with this new jailbreak tweak

Although I've never really understood the excitement behind the widgets, it's one of those things that my Android toting friends love to brag about.

What if I told you that there was an easy way to add widgets to the Home screen of an iOS device? What if I told you that there are a plethora of interesting widgets already available?

Both of the above statements are now true, courtesy of a new jailbreak tweak called Dashboard X. Dashboard X is the result of months of hard work by developer, Ori Kadosh. This tweak allows you to take existing widgets created for Notification Center and position them anywhere on your iPhone or iPad Home screen.

Take a look at inside for our hands-on experience with Dashboard X...

Chip: a feature rich jailbreak tweak for customizing banner notifications

With entries like Vexillum and ColorBanner, there's no shortage of jailbreak tweaks that allow you to customize your notification banners in iOS 5. But neither of those are as deep and complete as Chip.

As simple as its name may make it seem, Chip is by far the deepest of the three tweaks mentioned. It allows you to customize banner notification background color, text color, border color, and gradient using simple RGB sliders.

Chip also includes the ability to customize the notification sound and banner animation. If you're looking for the best tweak for customizing banner notifications, then look no further...

RedSn0w updated with minor bug fixes

Two weeks ago, the Dev Team released RedSn0w 0.9.10b8 with the ability to backup your iPhone's activation tickets. The tickets were a crucial part of the popular SAM unlock method.

Today, the Team has released another update to the jailbreaking utility, bringing it to version 0.9.10.b8b. But this time around, the new software only features a couple of bug fixes...

SpotDict: Search iOS’ built in dictionary from Spotlight

Spotlight search is very useful when you actually need to use it, but how many times do you find yourself needing to do so?

If you're anything like me, you can probably count on one hand how many times you've used Spotlight over the past few months.

Perhaps this recently released jailbreak tweak will coerce you into using Spotlight a bit more often? It's called SpotDict, and it allows you to look up words in iOS' built in dictionary directly from the Spotlight search page...

SwipeSelection — the jailbreak tweak based on Daniel Hooper's iPad keyboard editing concept — is now available on Cydia.

If you haven't seen our hands-on video and review of the tweak in action, be sure to check it out.

You can find SwipeSelection for free on Cydia's BigBoss repo, and it plays nice with both the iPad and iPhone.

Have you tried it? What do you think?

iPad text editing concept comes to life thanks to this jailbreak tweak

When Cody posted about Daniel Hooper’s iPad keyboard demo, we had no idea that it would be as popular as it has turned out to be. Thousands of retweets later, the public has spoken out against how terrible the iPad's editing situation is. I think John Gruber summed it up best when he noted that the iPad was a great for typing, but poor for editing.

The iPad keyboard demo video was created with the hopes that Apple would respond and implement something similar in the upcoming version of iOS. There's even instructions included on the video for submitting a bug report to Apple.

Well, Apple may not listen, but someone else did. Indeed, the jailbreak community has responded in a big way. Introducing SwipeSelection — a usable realization of the original iPad concept video...

iPad for Academics: setup, workflow, and accessories

With the rise of iPads in education continuing at a steady pace, it only seems natural to find ways to replace PC-dependent methods of academic work. Over the past year, I have tasked myself with replacing traditional education methods with the functionality of my iPad, from reading textbooks to taking lecture notes. Only recently have I taken the ultimate challenge: completing an entire research paper using only Apple's groundbreaking tablet, from conception to submission.

In trying to find solutions to the glaring obstacles in my path, I devised a workflow to make this task feasible. I compiled a list of strategies, study habits, iOS apps, accessories, and web apps that made me more efficient in everything from research to writing...

‘Image Grabber’ allows you to save and share images from any website or PDF

While mobile Safari is more than adequate for casual web surfing, it's also very limited when it comes to performing more advanced functions.

For instance, if you were interested in viewing the source code behind one of your favorite websites, it's impossible to do out of the box.

Even something as simple as viewing all of the images contained on a given page is out of reach. This is a function that's easily accomplished with stock versions of desktop browsers.

Thankfully we have jailbreaking, and with it the tools to accomplish such simple, yet otherwise impossible tasks. Take Image Grabber for example — a jailbreak tweak that allows you to view all of the images on a given web site or PDF, and save, copy, or share them...
