Can’t Run APT-GET from SSH/MobileTerminal? Try this

After jailbreaking for 4.1, many of you will notice you can no longer run apt-get commands from the command line, whether SSH or MobileTerminal. This is mind boggling, and none of the support sites or forums seem to have the right answer. The most common suggested solution is to delete some sources from Cydia and re-add them. This doesn't work.

After a few hours of troubleshooting, I gave up and assumed it was a limitation of greenpois0n. However, today I accidentally found the answer, and it's quite simple to make this work again.

Can’t Quit Apps with the Home Button? This Might Be Why.

Everything was pretty smooth for a while on my 4.1 jailbroken device, but then it happened. I tapped the Home button to quit an app and nothing happened. I double tapped it, and the switcher popped up. Another double tap and it retreated. Another single tap, but my open app stayed open.

If this happened to you, most likely the problem is with the latest version of Notified Pro. I did some research, and uninstalled Notified Pro via Cydia. After a reboot, the problem was gone. Just in case, I re-installed it. Within half an hour, the problem was back, and I couldn't quit apps without using the SBSettings Close Button.

I removed Notified Pro again, and problem solved. If you can't live without Notified Pro, check this out. Hope this helps some of you out there. Anyone else experience the same issue?

GreenPois0n First Impressions: the 4.1 Bugs

As soon as the Mac version of GreenPois0n came out, I went ahead and jailbroke my device. It wasn't the same eye-candy that JailbreakMe was, or even Comex's first jailbreak, but it worked and I didn't have to wait long. Here's a few quick things that I immediately noticed.

LockScreen PIN Delay

After a fresh reboot or a respring, I can no longer dive right in to tap the PIN to access my device. The problem is either a delay or the first tap or two is not recognized. But it definitely slows me down a little bit...

Bumpers Being Sold at Apple Stores Again

I know when Apple announced that they would be handing out free bumpers to anyone who bought an iPhone 4 that the masses would be up in arms over the possibility of Apple deciding to discontinue the case. It wouldn't shock this bruised up author a bit if it came out someday that the cases were made strictly as a bandaid to be given out for the antenna issue.

9 to 5 Mac is reporting that the beloved protective measure is currently being sold at Apple stores. Apple just recently stopped their free case giveaway on September 30th as planned and now plans to turn a profit off of all those pesky freebies...

Does Apple Game Center Only Allow 500 Friends?

As we reported last week Apple unveiled a special section in the App Store that features entries compatible with Game Center. This new iOS 4.1 feature is a social gaming network that allows you to compete against as many friends as you can convince to accept your requests. Apparently that isn't the case if your friend tally goes beyond 500.

A Deeper Look at Apple’s App Store Guidelines Revisions

We were all dancing in the street while holding up our posters of the Apple hierarchy when the announcement that the rules and regulations had been altered to allow just about anything into the App Store, right? Certainly there is no reason to believe that apps from the past that were once denounced will likely be gracing the store soon. But is that all of it?

What did the regulation altering really say? Certainly a company the size of Apple would need to put specifics down to paper when changing something as influential as the App Store regulations. PC World shows us they certainly did write things down, in that evasive Apple tone that always leaves room for immediate alteration in policy.

Apple Makes it Official, No More Free Cases for iPhone 4 After September 30th

It doesn't seem like it but Apple's free case program is coming to end soon. September 30th is the date Steve Jobs announced as reevaluation date and now Apple says that indeed the program will (sort of) fall by the wayside on that date.

I can't imagine owning an iPhone or other Apple handheld without the addition of the App Store. I've said before that I believe it to be the greatest asset to the iOS platform. So what's the problem?

There were certainly no shortage of complaints when the iPhone 4 was released, or perhaps there was no shortage of coverage relating to every issue users experienced. Whatever perspective you take there was an issue that didn't receive much attention compared to the rest. There seemed to be a couple problems relating discoloring of photos in certain light.

TUAW reported on it briefly while forums seem to run wild with complaints. This wasn't the only complaint regarding the camera as Apple's discussion board showed us. Other users seemed to be getting a green blob appearing in their photos with the intensity of the discrepancy occurring while indoors with florescent style lighting.

iOS 4 vs iOS 4.1 – Guess Who Wins

It was bad enough that many of the exciting features that accompanied iOS 4 weren't going to be added to the iPhone 3G. It was a whole different debacle when we reported that the device was basically crippled in many instances after making the upgrade.

Can Humidity Trigger The iPhone’s Water Sensors?

This is quite the contrast to the over-heating problem experienced by some iPhone owners. Gizmodo reports that Asian countries that deal with humidity indexes that average over 95% are suffering voided warranties due to water sensors' inability to handle the sticky conditions. As if living in 95% humidity wasn't bad enough in itself.

Apparently message boards have been lighting up to this topic and The South China Morning Post confirms the allegations that the devices suffering from the problem have been chalked up as water damaged. Back in April in the United States a class action lawsuit was filed over the same issue...
