Did Apple just kill Chomp for Android?

As we told you, Apple in February acquired Chomp for an undisclosed sum. Chomp is a popular recommendation engine that makes iOS and Android app discovery a more efficient and pleasing experience.

Coincidentally or not, the California-based powerhouse has now pulled Chomp for Android from the rival Google Play marketplace, also removing the Android app search option from the Chomp website.

The iPhone maker also submitted a Form S-8 regulatory filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), detailing stock options to Chomp's twenty employees...

iOSLiveTV.com streams live television to your iOS device totally free of charge

Here's something pretty cool (or should I say, 'magical'): a website that streams live television from anywhere in the world, right to your Apple mobile device, using an iOS-friendly MP4 video format via the AirPlay protocol. You just pull up the webpage using the Safari browser on your iPhone, iPod touch or iPad, pick one of the listed countries and up pop live television channels airing in the selected territory.

From here, tap the channel of your choice and live television content begins streaming, licensing restrictions be damned. In case you were wondering: yes, they have the XXX section covered as well. It's a hack, no question about it, so expect either Apple or broadcasters (or both) to restrict or even take down the site as we speak...

LinkedIn hits the iPad, looks gorgeous

LinkedIn just updated their excellent free of charge iPhone client with native iPad support. LinkedIn 5.0 is optimized for the Retina display on the new iPad and has a new calendar feature that lets you see LinkedIn profile information for people you're meeting with. If you're on LinkedIn and love your iPad, this one's a no-brainer...

The 2012 Apple Design Awards nominations now open, get your apps ready

As Apple announced this morning that it will hold its annual WWDC conference from June 11-15 at San Francisco's Moscone Center, they also revealed details about this year's Apple Design Awards. The prestigious award recognizes the best of the best in iOS and Mac app design, innovation and technology adoption.

Developers who intend to have their work included for this year's Apple Design Awards consideration are required to submit their apps by May 1 through Apple’s developer portal. However, even if you don’t submit your app, Apple could still award your work in one of the categories...

Clear to-do app updated with shake to undo, secret themes, UI tweaks

Realmac Software’s nice-looking to-do app dubbed Clear has been updated today with new features. It's the first update since the software's debut on the App Store in mid-February.

In addition to the shake-to-undo feature which, in my opinion, makes for a good demo but gets boring fast, Clear 1.1 added additional inspiration quotes while tweaking the interface with new gestures and other nice-to-haves.

The biggest new feature is support for 'secret' user interface themes. How secret? Well, you will need to unlock those to find out...

A month after it pulled out of print, Encyclopedia Britannica hits iOS

As you know, Encyclopedia Britannica announced in March plans to stop printing its iconic multi-volume book sets.

The decision to kill the dead-tree edition, following 244 years of publishing, has stunned folks who prefer credibility over availability and the old-fashioned types who enjoy that lovely feeling associated with flipping through the real pages.

Fortunately, fans can sigh a collective breath of relief as Encyclopedia Britannica goes digital, releasing their inaugural app for the iOS platform.

Shazam Player updated with iPad support, puts lyrics on your TV via AirPlay

Shazam Player, a cool music player software that landed on the iPhone and iPod touch last month, has been updated today with new features and native support for the iPad.

The program now takes advantage of the iPad's 9.7-inch canvas so the user interface feels less cluttered and it supports the new iPad's Retina display.

The biggest addition that'll do wonders for your home karaoke sessions is support for AirPlay via the Apple TV, allowing you to beam those lyrics to your big screen telly...

Apple Stores reportedly readying local iCloud backups for iOS devices requiring replacement

A new report out yesterday alleges that Apple is working on an interesting new solution for Geniuses at its retail stores that would bypass the need for tethered desktop iTunes or wireless iCloud backups for people seeking iOS device replacements.

The solution would let Geniuses to quickly and effortlessly backup your entire iPad, iPhone or iPod touch prior to the device exchange process. Likewise, Geniuses would later on be able to easily move that data back onto the replacement devices.

The solution is reportedly being prototyped at Apple’s top-secret Apple Store labs near the company’s Cupertino, California headquarters...

SliderWidth: adjust the width of your Lock screen slider

SliderWidth is a jailbreak tweak that does exactly what its name states — allows you to adjust the width of your iDevice's "Slide to Unlock" bar.

But that's not the only trick in this tweak's bag; it also allows you to use custom slider text, remove the Lock camera button or photo frame button, along with being compatible with the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch.

Walmart adopts Apple’s boutique store concept with stylish displays carrying iOS devices

Walmart has been selling the new iPad in select stores since the device launched last month. They've also had other Apple products on offer for some time.

Realizing it leaves a lot to be desired, the world's largest retailer is apparently ready to take the shopping experience for its demanding Apple customers to the next level.

Nice-looking photos of stylish Apple displays inside Walmart's store in Arkansas depict a radical departure from the retailer's otherwise dull and poorly maintained shelves carrying electronics.

Akin to a store-within-a-store idea seen at other retailers, the redesigned Apple section would suggest that the mega-retailer is keen on exploring Apple's boutique store concept...

Apple working on high quality “unibody” earbuds

Imagine that, another patent application has popped up in the United States Patent and Trademark Office database this week with Apple's name on it. The filing is entitled Ultrasonically Welded Structures and Methods for Making the Same.

But don't let the ridiculously long name scare you. The patent is part of a group of cross-referenced filings that all make up different parts of a pair of high quality unibody headphones that it seems Apple is working on in its labs...
