Super Mario clone returns to the App Store as ‘Pixel World!’

Earlier this year, a Super Mario clone named Super Bros! made its way into the App Store. Given the company's history of blocking and removing obvious Nintendo game ripoffs and emulators, it was surprising that such a game made it past the review team.

Eventually, though, someone at Apple caught on and Super Bros! was pulled from the App Store, but it didn't stay gone for long. The game returned today as "Pixel World!," with updated sounds and game assets that help tone down the whole "ripoff" vibe a bit.

Initial developer interest in Apple Watch higher than in early iPhones and iPads, Cook says

During his China tour last month that took him to the eastern city of Hangzhou, home to the largest Apple Store worldwide, CEO Tim Cook said the Apple Watch has attracted greater adoption by developers than the earliest iPhones and iPads had, according to an interview published Monday by the Chinese language edition of Bloomberg Businessweek.

He said developers have been working on more than 3,500 apps for the watch, a data point Cook reiterated during the WWDC keynote earlier this month. By comparison, the App Store launched with 500 iPhone apps back in the summer of 2008 and there were about a thousand apps available for the first iPad in 2010.

Oceanhorn, Badland and more discounted in ‘Amazing Fantasy Games’ sale

Gamers will be interested to know that a number of high profile iOS titles are currently on sale in the App Store. Apple is highlighting 16 games in a temporary 'Amazing Fantasy Games' section, which have all been discounted by at least 50% for a limited time.

The games include titles from the popular Final Fantasy franchise, the hit action-adventurer Oceanhorn, and the winner of multiple Apple design awards, BADLAND. There are also some lesser known titles, such as The Bard's Tale, Hero Emblems and more.

Catapult puzzler ‘Warhammer: Snotling Fling’ goes free as Apple’s App of the Week

Apple has just named “Warhammer: Snotling Fling” its App of the Week for this week. This means that from now through next Thursday, you’ll be able to download the game for both iPhone and iPad for free—a significant savings of $4.

Snotling Fling is essentially an over-the-shoulder take on Angry Birds, set in the Warhammer universe. Players are tasked with slingshotting hapless goblins at enemy soldiers in an attempt to stop Gorbad Ironclaw and save the Realm.

Lead the Rebel Alliance to victory in Star Wars – Heroes Path, now available in App Store

Based on Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, the original Star Wars film, Disney's just-released Star Wars - Heroes Path for the iPhone and iPad challenges players to lead the Rebel Alliance to victory in a series of movie-based puzzles.

The game revisits the original storyline of the Rebel Alliance's quest to blow the Death Star to pieces and beat the Galactic Empire. In Star Wars - Heroes Path, you'll enjoy cartoonish renditions of the movie's iconic characters such as Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Princess Leia, Chewbacca, RS-D2 and many more.

Unicode 8 includes new hot dog, unicorn and burrito emoji

On Wednesday, the Unicode Consortium released Unicode 8, the next major update to the Unicode Standard. The Standard defines things like special characters and emoji, which many manufacturers, including Apple, use in their software.

Unicode 8 introduces nearly 8,000 new characters, including letters to support new languages and six new scripts. Perhaps more interesting, to us anyway, is that it also includes 37 new emoji and 5 emoji modifiers for various skin colors.

Dark Sky gets huge 5.0 update with new layout, advanced notifications and more

Popular weather client Dark Sky received a significant update today, bringing the app to version 5.0.0. The release includes several improvements like a new layout, advanced notifications, and the ability to collect pressure sensor data from compatible devices.

As for the new layout, it now features a detailed hour-by-hour 24 hour timeline, and you can create custom alerts for that timeline for things like temperature, wind and more. There's also a new weather reporter, so users can provide feedback on their weather.

iOS 9 Picture-in-Picture feature hacked to run Doom

Developer Adam Bell has hacked together a demo of the popular first-person shooter game Doom running on an iPad in iOS 9's Picture-in-Picture mode. A video shows him opening apps and performing other functions on his iPad, while a demo of Doom runs in a smaller window.

Bell says that his iPad isn't jailbroken, and he's not using any kind of process injection. His method involves the use of public developer APIs, which means there's theoretically nothing stopping devs from implementing this in their apps, although it's unlikely Apple would approve it.

Premium turn-based strategy game starring Lara Croft previewed, hitting iOS later in the year

A stylized Tomb Raider game is coming to mobiles as developer Square Enix Montréal announced at E3 Lara Croft GO. Created by the same team that brought you award-winning strategy game Hitman GO, Lara Croft GO is billed as a ground-breaking mobile experience.

The game takes place in a long-forgotten ancient civilization and adopts a turn-based concept with exploration and puzzle solving thrown in for good measure, a recipe which has made Lara Croft, the heroine of the hugely successful Tomb Raider series, such a phenomenon in video games.

Twitter for iOS and twitter.com to start autoplaying videos today—here’s how to turn it off

You could say I'm not a big fan of intrusive autoplay videos in apps, not to mention those pesky autoplay video ads on some websites. With that in mind, I was taken aback when Twitter announced today adding this very feature to its iPhone and iPad application and the web interface.

Now when you stumble upon a tweet with an embedded Vine, animated GIF or a clip in Twitter's native format, it will begin to play back automatically.

It's all part of the grand plan to shove advertising down our throat though Twitter would have us believe it's trying to make our lives easier so we could “keep up with the action without missing a tweet and get a better sense of what’s been shared instantly.”

Because autoplay videos suck your cellular data, this feature is a major concern in this age of non-unlimited plans. True, Twitter promises to opt out of autoplay anyone who's on a high-rate data plan, but I'd rather trust my instincts and revert back to the old-school click-to-play experience.

Thankfully, there's an easy way to do just that.
