Firewatch preview: stunning mystery adventure for Mac set in Wyoming wilderness

If you own a Mac, the name of developer Panic may ring a bell. What do you mean 'no'? This Portland, Oregon based studio is responsible for some well-known Mac utilities, such as the FTP app called Transmit (now available on iOS as well) and the brilliant web editor Coda, to name but a few.

Anyways, Panic has provided the funds to launch a small but scrappy new game studio, Campo Santo. And Panic and Campo's inaugural Mac game called Firewatch will be a sight to behold, that's for sure.

A mere glance at this eye-candy of a game tells you that Firewatch is going to be something special, an atmospheric adventure bound to push the envelope in terms of both graphics and storytelling.

Apple reportedly doing away with antivirus apps in the App Store

Apple has decided to eliminate the category of anti-virus and anti-malware products from the App Store, according to security firm Intego.  The company announced this week that Apple informed them of their decision after pulling their app 'VirusBarrier for iOS.'

"To be clear, this wasn’t an action directed specifically at Intego, we were one of several companies affected by Apple's decision," writes Intego's Jeff Erwin. Erwin adds that users will continue to get virus definition updates, but there will be no more updates to the app.

Apple names Dark Echo its Free App of the Week

Sony’s new PlayStation Vue streaming TV service coming to iPad soon

Yesterday, Sony launched its long-anticipated streaming television service called PlayStation Vue in select markets like Chicago, New York City and Philadelphia. The online video subscription service doesn't require a cable or satellite subscription.

It will be initially available on the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 consoles and is coming to Apple's iPad “in the near future,” the Japanese giant has confirmed.

Launcher is back on App Store as Apple’s stance on widget restrictions softens

Launcher, a tremendously useful iOS application by Greg Gardner for creating app, web and contact shortcuts available from a widget inside the Notification Center, is now back on the App Store following a six-month hiatus. The update is still propagating and it should hit all App Stores worldwide in the coming hours.

The original app was short-lived.

Following its App Store debut on September 17 of last year, the day iOS 8 was released, Apple removed Launcher just a week later citing a misuse of widget functionality.

Thankfully, the re-released app continues to offer the same features like its predecessor, indicating Apple may have softened its stance on launching other apps via the Today view of iOS 8's Notification Center.
