Hands on video demo of the iPad mini

With Apple's dual-core A5 chip, the same found inside the iPad 2, the iPad mini has enough horse power to drive existing apps because pixel count didn't change: the device still features a 1,024-by-768 pixel resolution screen like the iPad 2. As a consequence of the smaller display, the pixels are more densely packed, yielding crisper images and fonts.

Its 7.9-inch display is rated at 163 pixels per inch versus 132ppi for the iPad 2 (264ppi for the iPad 3 and 216ppi for the Nexus 7). Taking it all in, The Verge had a chance to briefly play with the new gizmo after Apple's events, here are their impressions and a nice hands-on video...

iPad mini tech specs

Now that we know all about the new iPad mini, its features, and its price tag, it's time to take a look at the technical specifications of the tablet. How is it going to measure up to Apple's other devices performance-wise?

Phil Schiller breezed over this a bit on stage, saying that the iPad mini was equal to or better than the iPad 2 in almost every way. And to prove it, Apple's just posted a full list of iPad mini tech specs on its website...

Yes, the iPad mini includes Siri

I've been asked a few times about Siri's presence of the new iPad mini. Yes, Siri will be included out of the box on the new iPad mini. Apple even has screenshots of Siri in action on their iPad mini page.

Check after the break for a few more screenshots of Siri in action for the iPad mini...

IHS iSuppli predicts off the sales for the iPad mini in 2013

Just as Apple revived a dormant tablet industry, the iPad maker is expected to double the market for seven-inch tablets. Thanks to its incoming smaller iPad, demand for tablets in the seven-inch range will grow to a third of the overall market by 2013, a market research firm announced Tuesday.

"Just as Apple has dominated the market for 9.7-inch tablets with its iPad, iPad 2 and new iPad models, the company is poised to rule the market for 7.x-inch products", said Rhoda Alexander, director of tablet and monitor research for IHS iSuppli. Indeed, the market for such tablets will increase 100 percent this year and next, according to the research firm...

Conveniently, Sharp says IGZO devices set to surge

On the eve of Apple's iPad mini event, the Japanese giant Sharp has announced it expects shipments of devices incorporating its cutting-edge low-power IGZO (Indium gallium zinc oxide) display technology to surge. IGZO incorporates a thin-film transistor that allows for thinner devices while reducing power consumption and increasing image quality. NPD DisplaySearch claimed last month Apple would refresh display tech on the iPad 3 and another story back in July asserted that a 7.85-inch mini iPad would use  an IGZO display made by Sharp...

Get your Passbook ticket for today’s iPad mini event

With three and a half hours left to go, why not get your Passbook vanity ticket for today's iPad mini event? I first checked with digital ticketing company Flon Solutions because they already provide some nice novelty Passbook passes from historic events.

Unfortunately, the company hasn't yet updated their database with the iPad mini event ticket. Luckily, Twitter came to the rescue. Obviously this isn't a real event ticket so don't try to get into the press conference with it...

Apple will also live stream today’s iPad mini event via its home page

Apple earlier today updated the Apple TV interface with a new Apple Events section which contains a link to a live stream of today's iPad mini press conference. The move prompting somewhat unusual speculation that the company will only provide a live stream as a courtesy to Apple TV owners. We provided some workaround solution at the bottom of this post and now Apple has made it official: you will be able to enjoy the live stream on either your Apple TV or by opening a page on Apple's web site using the Safari browser on your iPhone, iPod touch, iPad, Mac or Windows PC...
