Google+ Goes Public, Hangouts and Other Features Coming to iOS

Is it just me, or does it seem like the 'buzz' around Google+ has quieted down over the last month or so? Now it just reminds me of that toy you begged for in the store as a kid, and then only played with for 10 minutes after you got home.

But maybe that'll change. Maybe it'll find its sweet spot, somewhere between the family and friend oriented Facebook and the here and now news of Twitter. We'll find out in the coming months, as the previously invitation-only service just went public...

Google Introduces Mobile Payments for Smartphones with Google Wallet

Google has finally unveiled its public service for mobile payments called Google Wallet. The NFC-based technology will initially work with select Android devices and participating merchants to give customers the ability to pay with their smartphones.

Short of a South Korean carrier offering an NFC-equipped iPhone case to customers, mobile payment technology has yet to make its name known on the iOS platform. Apple is expected to unveil an iPhone with an embedded NFC chip next year...

Advertising: Why Android Device Makers are Still Doing it Wrong

If you've watched TV for any extended amount of time in the past 5 years, you've likely seen at least one of Apple's commercials. From the "I'm a Mac" series, to the more recent "If you don't have an iPhone..." campaign, the company's advertising has been top notch.

But the TV ads aren't highly revered because of their content — people admire them because they work. They portray products that make technology simple and easy to use, and that's attractive to the general public. But Android on the other hand...

Apple Owns 68% of Worldwide Tablet Shipments

IDC have been at the old researching game again, and this time they've decided that Apple's iPad accounts for a massive 68% of worldwide tablet shipments, which we have to admit, isn't to be sniffed at!

The results are for the second quarter of 2011, which means it is worth remembering that the recent influx of Android-powered tablets will no doubt have altered that landscape slightly...

Europeans Love Android More Than iOS?

Everyone loves sales numbers, right? If that's true, everyone really loves sales numbers that claim that either Android or iOS is winning the mobile war.

It seems different numbers point to a different winner in this war, or at least a different winner in each battle. And this time around it's Android's turn to be the victor...

Why Gtalk is Already the SMS Replacement that iMessage Wants to Be

The race to kill SMS is on. Instant messaging apps have flooded both the App Store and Android Market, with WhatsApp and others seeking to replace SMS by offering free, cross-platform messaging in (sometimes) fancy-looking apps that allow not only the sending and receiving of text, but also the sending of pictures and video.

Even Samsung is set to join the fray, with ChatON being the company's first foray into the world of instant messaging. Samsung promises to release apps on just about every platform. It seems that everyone has it in for SMS, and the carriers must surely know what's going. And let's not forget Apple's iMessage...

Google Launches iOS Web App For Google Music

Oh Google, you so crazy! After leaving us iPhone users out in the cold while our Android-toting brethren run around streaming their music from this thing they like to call 'the cloud' (it's a bit like iCloud, I'm told!) you finally decide to bring the Google Music circus to iOS.

In typical Google fashion, things have been implemented a little differently than how we expected. Google Music for iOS isn't a native app, but rather a web app. And it's pretty darn good one...

Google Finally Releases a Blogger App for iOS

It's only fitting that one of the oldest blogging platforms currently in existence just got its own iOS app. Google has announced Blogger for the iPhone and iPad.

Blogger itself recently underwent a huge revamp, and the iOS app takes obvious cues from the platform's new design. Mainly, you get to look at that ugly orange color...

Get Your Photos to Google+ with the Google+ Photo Importer on the iPhone

Google's first real foray into the world of social networks, Google+, is growing rapidly. The network's numbers have grown steadily since its inception.

If you're really going to jump into the Google+ world with both feet, you'll be needing to get your photos into imported, and chances are they're already housed in another network or online storage system.

A new app, Google+ Photo Importer, offers a quick and easy way for iPhone users to move their photos from a selection of online services and social networks straight into Google+...

Google+ App Updated, Re-Sharing and Bug Fixes Ahoy!

Google has pushed out an updated version of its Google Plus iPhone and iPod touch app via the App Store, bringing with it various bug fixes, along with the much wished for 'reshare' feature.

The update brings the app up to version number 1.0.3.2124, and attempts to give the iOS app parity with its Android-based cousin. The reshare ability was added to the Android app recently, and Apple's App Store approval process has been the reason for the delay on this side of the iPhone/Android divide.

For those that have ever wondered if the big developers get special treatment in the App Store, you just got your answer...

VoiceKeys: Speech-to-Text on Your iPhone

VoiceKeys is a brand new jailbreak tweak from Ryan Petrich, that attempts to bring easy to use speech-to-text to the iPhone.

In order to make the tweak as seamlessly integrated as possible, Ryan opted to use the already popular Action Menu as a means to invoke the speech recognition properties.

The result thus far has been sort of a mixed bag, but keep in mind that this is only version 1.0 of the tweak. Check inside for a video demonstration of VoiceKeys in action...
