Facebook announces App Center, a cross-platform app store

Late yesterday afternoon, Facebook announced that it was going to be launching a cross-platform app store, coded entirely in HTML5, called App Center. Cross-platform meaning it will be available on both Android and iOS, as well as the web.

No, this doesn't mean that the social network is looking to take on Apple or Google. The App Center will contain both iOS and Android apps, along with Facebook's own titles, and will link directly to each platform's respective app stores...

Are you happy to finally see Facebook support in TwitkaFly?

A look at TwitkaFly’s new Facebook plugin

Earlier today I had the opportunity to spend some time with the new Facebook plugin for TwitkaFly — the popular jailbreak tweak available on Cydia.

TwitkaFly is a tweak that allows you to send Twitter updates from anywhere by means of a user-configurable Activator action. It is also one of the most well supported tweaks that I know of, which speaks volumes for moeseth, its developer.

This new plugin will allow you to update your Facebook status, send a tweet, or do both at the same time. If you'd like to see how it works in action, then by all means take a gander...

Facebook testing Messenger for iPad with Skype video calling

A new report alleges that Facebook is working to add video chatting capabilities to its standalone messaging app for the iPhone. Additionally, the Facebook Messenger for iPad with video calling is also being tested internally.

Both versions of the Messenger app take advantage of Facebook’s deal with Skype from July of last year which has enabled the social networking behemoth to deliver Skype video calling right within the desktop interface...

Facebook working on iPad version of Messenger app

The Facebook Messenger app debuted last fall and has remained one of the most popular iOS apps ever since. It seems a lot of members of the social networking service use the standalone messaging app over standard texting.

So far, the software has only been available [for iOS] on the iPhone. But it looks like that could be changing in the near future. According to 9to5Mac, Facebook is working on an iPad version of its popular Messenger app...

Zuck says Steve Jobs inspired Facebook’s new organ donor tool

The internet went abuzz yesterday as Facebook's Zuckerberg dropped hints of a new feature said to "save lives".

Turns out the Facebook co-founder and CEO was speaking literally: today, the social network unveiled a new tool aptly named Organ Donor.

It's basically a way of letting anyone identify their organ donor status on their Facebook Timeline. The move should help over 114,000 people waiting for transplants in the United States alone.

Zuck also said it was inspired by late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, who underwent a liver transplant in 2009 and later that year publicly urged WWDC attendees to become organ donors...

Facebook reportedly still working on a smartphone with HTC

Late last year, some rumors started circulating that Facebook was working on its very own smartphone. Code-named "Buffy," the handset was to be built by HTC, and feature a forked version of Android with core-level integration of the social network.

Today, DigiTimes is reviving the rumor with a new report regarding the mysterious device. Quoting "industry sources," the site says that Facebook is set to release the smartphone as early as Q3 of this year, shortly after the company goes public...

Google’s Brin says Apple is “balkanizing the web”

Unless I and pretty much every other journalist out there extrapolated the original report, it appears that Google co-founder Sergey Brin has called out Apple and Facebook for running closed platforms that, in his mind, are "balkanizing the web".

Why? Because apps, media and other content served within these ecosystems is not crawlable by the almighty Google search engine. And even though Google's built an empire on other people's content, Google's co-founder calls the latest trends "scary".

Don't laugh, Brin actually realized a pattern his role model Steve Jobs laid out two years ago...

Facebook acquires Instagram for a staggering $1 billion

This is pretty crazy: Facebook's CEO Mark Zuckerberg just announced that the social network has acquired Instagram for a staggering $1 billion in cash and stock.

Instagram, once an iPhone-exclusive photo sharing service, has around 30 million users, that upload around 5 million photos per day. Keep reading for the full press release...

Fusion: integrate Facebook sharing into iOS 5 and more

Wouldn't it be great if you could have Facebook integration that acted similar to iOS' built in Twitter integration? Well, now you can.

Introducing Fusion — a jailbreak tweak that integrates Facebook, Foursquare, and even MySpace (obligatory lol) into your default Twitter composition pane. But the tweak doesn't stop there, it also allows you to composes messages for all of the aforementioned networks using Siri.

Check out our full video walkthrough on this awesome jailbreak tweak inside...

Security hole in Facebook app could lead to identity theft

Folks who use Facebook's iOS app might want to make sure to stay away from using public computers and charging stations for a while. Apparently a serious security glitch has been discovered in the software that could give hackers access to your account.

Security researcher Gareth Wright published a blog post yesterday that has raised some serious questions about how iOS developers are handling saved values — logins, etc. It seems that some apps are saving this data in plain, unencrypted text files...

Facebook iPad app updated for Retina display

It took them a while but Facebook has finally updated their iPad application with Retina display graphics. The update also brings a few new features as well as minor bug fixes.

Considering how big Facebook is, I find it slightly disappointed they take so long to release such a simple update. Anyway, we have listed the full change log below for those of you interested...
