Comex releases an alpha build of Substitute, a controversial Cydia Substrate replacement

Today, Comex made good on his promise and released an alpha build of Substitute—the hacker's polarizing new Cydia Substrate replacement for jailbroken iPhones. Back in January, it was revealed that Comex was helping the iMods team—a crew that is working on a Cydia replacement—with some of the necessary fundamentals to get the project off the ground.

One of the most needed pieces of a Cydia replacement is a Cydia Substrate replacement. Without Cydia Substrate, or something like it, then a Cydia replacement doesn't make much sense. Not only has Comex pledged his support for the project, but he's just brought one of its most important puzzle pieces to reality.

Cydia receives a visual update that ushers in a flatter more modern look

As promised by saurik, and as we reported on a few days ago, Cydia has received a modest visual update. The update, which makes the interface look a lot more modern and flat, has rolled out automatically, hence there is no need to download any updates.

It's been a long time since we've heard Comex's name be associated with jailbreaking, but he's back, and in a fairly large and controversial way. The creator of JailbreakMe is working with the team behind iMods—a Cydia alternative—to develop a Mobile (Cydia) Substrate replacement called Substitute. On the surface, it may not sound like much, but this could have far-reaching consequences on jailbreaking as we currently know it.

In the six years that I've been part of the jailbreak community, I can count on the fingers of one hand how many so-called "Cydia alternatives" have come to fruition. The result is pretty simple. Zero. None. Well, there was RockYourPhone at one time, which was later purchased by saurikIT, but besides that, none of the several attempts ever made their way to the public. Who knows, maybe iMods will be the first.

TaiG jailbreak updated to version 1.1, upgradable via Cydia

The TaiG 8.0-8.1.1 Untether has been updated to version 1.1, and it comes bundled in the TaiG jailbreak that's downloadable for Windows, and it also comes as a Cydia package for those who have already jailbroken with TaiG.

The update doesn't appear to be a major update, but there are fixes included to fix sandboxing issues present in the previous version of the TaiG jailbreak tool. Users who are jailbroken, and those who have yet to jailbreak should use TaiG 1.1.

Substrate Safe Mode updated to fix CPU usage issues

Substrate Safe Mode, the package that allows jailbreakers to safely boot into Safe Mode and remove uncooperative packages, has been updated to version 0.9.5000. The update, which was pushed by Saurik just recently, fixes a fairly significant issue related to CPU usage.

Safe Mode works similar to the Safe Mode on desktop machines, as it allows you to boot without loading certain extensions, allowing you to troubleshoot problem extensions. Have a look inside for more details.

Apex 2 updated to support iOS 8.1

Several well-loved tweaks from the jailbreak community have been receiving their iOS 8 updates over the past several weeks, the latest of which being Apex 2. This popular tweak by A3Tweaks allows users to create app stacks, which work similarly to folders and can be used to group similar apps in an attractive bundle.

Apex 2 is a great way to eliminate folders on the Home screen and replace them with stacks of up to five total apps. Check out Jeff's review of Apex 2 for a look at the features of Apex 2.

Cydia Substrate receives key developer-oriented updates

Cydia Substrate had been updated twice, once to version 0.9.5100, and again to version 0.9.5101. Both updates are mostly developer oriented with no consumer facing features that everyday users will notice.

The first update can inject into more iOS 8 daemons, find more private symbols, and more. The second update fixes an incompatibility with the first update. Check inside for the full change log.

30 new and updated jailbreak tweaks worth checking out

With the release of the Pangu jailbreak for both Windows and Mac users, developers have been busy updating their tweaks for iOS 8 and iPhone 6 or 6 Plus, but also releasing new tweaks featuring new features.

Admittedly, we haven't been on top of our game covering all these new updates and releases. The sheer volume of these tweaks makes it very hard to have a proper look at everything that us being pushed to Cydia, but we don't want you to be left out either, so we've compiled a list of tweaks that were recently released or updated.

There are probably some tweaks missing, because again, it's really hard to keep track of everything that makes its way to Cydia, but that should give you a good starting point if you're looking for tweaks to add to your arsenal.

Saurik touts jailbreak and Cydia stability for iOS 8, enables Cydia purchases

Another day, another milestone. Saurik, the man behind Cydia, has re-enabled purchases for paid Cydia apps and tweaks, which means that you can now purchase apps and tweaks that were, for a time, unobtainable for some.

He also made sure to lend credibility to the stability of both Cydia and the iOS 8 jailbreak via a pair of tweets—the first of such since the iOS 8 jailbreak arrived.

Upscale: Change the resolution on your jailbroken iPhone

Upscale is a new jailbreak tweak that allows you to run higher resolutions on jailbroken iPhones. The tweak, which is currently in beta, features serval presets to choose from via its settings.

This tweak makes it possible to run the iPhone 6 or 6 Plus resolution on older devices like the iPhone 5 or iPhone 5s—devices with substantially less screen real estate. The result is an interface that features less than ideal tap-zones, but much more room to work with on screen.

Upscale is a compelling jailbreak tweak that everyone should at least investigate. First noted and discovered by developers cpdigitaldarkroom and coolstar, this is a tweak that will surely turn a lot of heads. Full details after the jump...
