Apple said to be rushing iOS 6.1.1 to address 3G and enterprise issues

Over the past week or so, several users have come forward complaining about issues with iOS 6.1. Vodafone has actually told its iPhone 4S owners not to update to the software due to the problems, and AOL Corporate has had to turn off some Exchange services.

Well it looks like Apple is working to get these bugs fixed as soon as possible. A new report out this morning claims that carriers have already completed testing of iOS 6.1.1, and the 23MB firmware will be available in the near future as an over-the-air update...

Sprint, AT&T and Verizon confirm they will carry 128GB LTE iPad 4

Sprint, the nation's third-largest wireless carrier, wasted no time following Apple's quiet announcement of the 128GB iPad 4 earlier this morning, with multiple blogs confirming the telco will be carrying the newly announced gizmo.

Sprint's been selling iPhones and iPads since last year and today its SVP confirmed plans to sell the fourth-generation iPad with LTE, Retina display and 128 gigabytes of storage - likely beginning February 5, when it's scheduled to hit the Apple online and retail stores and select Apple Authorized Resellers...

AT&T buying $1.9 billion worth of spectrum from Verizon

U.S. carrier AT&T announced Friday that it will acquire 700 MHz spectrum from rival Verizon Wireless in a cash transaction valued at $1.9 billion. The 700 MHz band was originally used to broadcast analog TV channels and in 2008 was put up for auction. AT&T says it will use the airwaves to improve its 4G LTE U.S. network presence...

The good news is, Cook says these carriers will be in countries that are not currently supporting LTE. So for those of you who have a 4G iPhone or iPad and don't currently get LTE, be on the lookout...

How Verizon almost made Siri an Android exclusive

Apple's digital secretary, Siri, arrived as an iPhone 4S exclusive in October 2011, but the feature almost ended up being exclusive to Android devices on the Verizon network. According to a new report, Verizon in the fall of 2009 managed to sign a deal with the startup to make Siri a default app on all Android phones set to launch in the new year. It's interesting that the agreement was signed several months before Apple approached Siri and that the carrier even created unreleased ads highlighting Siri on Android.

Several months later, Apple came into full view to acquire the startup outright, effectively making the feature exclusive to its devices and narrowly escape seeing Siri falling into hands of the Android camp...

Verizon activates 6.2M iPhones in Q4 2012, but quarterly loss doubles

Carrier Verizon Wireless Tuesday morning posted results for the 2012 holiday quarter. The numbers don't look good: the company posted a huge loss of $1.93 billion, despite adding a "record-high" 2.1 million new subscribers on smartphone penetration of 58 percent.

Even though quarterly revenues increased 5.7 percent to as much as $30 billion, Verizon reported negative EPS of a whopping $1.48, blaming the decline on pensions and costs associated with Hurricane Sandy. In a conference call with analyst, Verizon's finance chief confirmed that iPhone activations hit 6.2 million units out of 9.8 million smartphones, or 63 percent. This was the first quarter with full three months of iPhone 5 sales on the Verizon network...

WSJ: AT&T considering a merger in Europe

Faced with constraints on growth at home, U.S. carrier AT&T is reportedly considering entering new markets in Europe via a merger with one of the key players in a major European market such as the United Kingdom, Germany or the Netherlands, the Wall Street Journal reported Thursday. The carrier is allegedly hoping to bring its technological expertise in building 4G networks to the table.

European telcos have been slow to roll out fourth-generation networks so AT&T through its European partner could help roll out the latest in 4G technology in order to then introduce "more lucrative pricing strategies". European carriers get most of their revenue from voice plans and text messaging, unlike in the United States where telcos have shifted to new plans that charge subscribers based on their data use...

Nearly 50% of Verizon’s data traffic travels over LTE

iPhone 4s

Although LTE may not be available in some corners around the world yet, it's certainly taken the US by storm. Three out of our four largest carriers have live LTE networks, and the fourth one, T-Mobile, will have one up shortly.

In fact, Verizon, who was first to market with LTE technology back in 2010, has its 4G network lit up in close to 500 markets. And the company says that it's now seeing nearly 50 percent of its data load travel over that network...

Verizon activates 9.8M smartphones in Q4 amid a ‘higher mix’ of iPhones

Verizon announced it activated 9.8 million smartphones during the holiday 2012 fourth quarter. In a statement to federal regulators, the nation's largest carrier said there was a "higher mix of smartphones", causing some observers to believe the wireless provider sold more than 5.3 million iPhones during the three-month period.

Rival AT&T yesterday told the Securities and Exchange Commission it sold 10 million smartphones during the fourth quarter, prompting one analyst to suggest the Dallas-based carrier sold at least eight million Apple handsets...
