Apple Posts a Roundup of iPhone Apps From TV Ads

We all love Apple's broadcast commercials. They're elegant, pretty, and a great way to show off what makes the iPhone special.

There have been many iPhone ads from Apple over the years. These ads show off some of the best apps in the App Store. Have you ever seen an app in an iPhone commercial and wished you knew its name so you could download it yourself?

Apple has posted a roundup of popular apps from iPhone TV ads on iTunes...

“Theme It” Store Released in Cydia, Direct Competition for Cydia’s Own Theme Center

Finding good themes for a jailbroken iPhone has never been that easy. Themes are usually posted by designers on forums and portfolio websites, and it can be difficult for the average jailbreaker to discover all of the great themes that are out there.

Cydia recently added the "Theme Center," which aims to help users find the plethora of Winterboard themes for jailbroken iDevices. The Theme Center is a great addition to Cydia, but there is plenty of room for improvement.

"Theme It" is a new jailbreak app that aims to be the "Theme Store you've been waiting for." It does look very promising...

The App Store Gets An Official Twitter Account

Who says Apple doesn't like Twitter? The hilarious @CEOSteveJobs Twitter account was recently approached by Twitter (on Apple's behalf ) and asked to make clear that the account was parody and not reflective of Apple Inc. While Apple had a bad impression of Twitter in that case, the company still understands the value in the "tweet."

Apple has a few official Twitter accounts in existence. The @AppStore is the newest addition. The App Store welcomed itself into the Twittersphere with the tweet, "Welcome to App Store on Twitter! Follow us to discover new apps, get exclusive offers, and share with friends. #appstore"

Apple will use @AppStore for featured apps, promotions, and hopefully some interesting App Store facts and statistics...

Rumor: Apple Bringing Landscape Mode to the Home Screen and New Multitouch Gestures in iOS 4.3

The Apple rumor mill has been churning fast and furiously over the past few weeks. There's been more white iPhone 4 speculation, some details about the iPhone 5 released, and the rumor that the next iPhone will be without a home button.

Details about iOS 4.3 have started to emerge in light of the beta that Apple recently made available to the developer community. Among these details, it seems that, after the failure of Ping, Apple may be trying its luck again with another social media attempt.

The iPad's home screen has had landscape mode compatibility since product launch, but Apple has not yet brought that feature to the iPhone. Many have asked for a landscape home screen, but it has been absent from the iPhone for years. Well, that is, until now...

Internally Leaked Screenshots Confirming Multitouch Gestures in iOS 4.3

It looks as though the iPad won't be the only one to get the new multitouch gestures unearthed in the iOS 4.3 beta. Boy Genius has released some iPhone screenshots that are claimed to come from internal testing at Apple's headquarters in Cupertino.

We recently reported on the rumor that the next major version of the iPhone would have no home button. Instead, it was supposed that iOS would use multitouch gestures (two, three, four fingers, etc.) to replace the functionality of the home button.

This new report seems to support the theory of no home button on the iPhone 5. Apparently, Apple has been testing multitouch gestures on the iPhone (there is nothing to clarify if the screenshots are associated with new hardware) internally for quite some time...

Current Verizon Customers Should Be Eligible for a $200 Credit Towards the iPhone 4

Good news for current Verizon customers: the latest U.S. iPhone carrier has posted its FAQ on the iPhone 4, and it turns out that a $200 credit will be given towards an iPhone upgrade. However, not everyone will qualify for this credit.

If you purchased a new smartphone from Verizon Wireless between November 26, 2010 and January 10, 2011, you should be eligible for a $200 credit towards an iPhone 4 upgrade. This credit should be available as long as your purchase the iPhone on Verizon before February 28.

Verizon's FAQ has some interesting answers for current (and potential) customers who might want to use their available upgrade on the iPhone 4...

How to Use Your iPhone as a Network Drive

There are plenty of ways to access the files on your iPhone, whether through iTunes, SSH, SFTP, iFile, or a multitude of apps. However, adding automatic network sharing to your setup takes quite a few steps out of connecting to your device.

I tried these in an attempt to get my video game media center to read files on my iPhone from inside the network. If you'd like to turn your iPhone into a shared network drive for any reason, there are two particular Cydia packages that you should try today...

iPhone 3G on BaseBand 06.15.00 Unlocked for Life

It's official. If you have an iPhone 3G on baseband 06.15.00 and you are unlocked , you better get comfortable. MuscleNerd confirmed in a recent tweet that since the iPhone 3G will not be receiving the 4.3 firmware upgrade, your iPhone 3G will remain unlocked indefinitely.

Now let's not all panic, this only affects iPhone 3G users on the above mentioned baseband. If you are unsure of your baseband version, you can go to settings -> general -> about -> modem firmware.  For most of us this isn't a huge deal, but to iPhone 3G users who unlocked using the 06.15 UltraSnow unlock, and have been experiencing GPS issues, this is devastating...

Steve Jobs Takes a Medical Leave of Absence from Apple

Big news coming out of Cupertino today, Steve Jobs has requested, and has been granted a medical leave of absence. Apple's website posted an email that Steve sent out to all Apple employees earlier today. His reasons stated for taking the leave is so that he can "focus on [his] health."

As you may remember, it wasn't too long ago that Steve took a similar leave when he experienced health issues related to his liver, that being almost two years ago to the day...

Apple Asks Federal Government to Put an End to Jailbreaking

According to NBC, Apple has filed a request to the Federal Government to stop “hackers” from jailbreaking the iPhone.

Even though jailbreaking and unlocking the iPhone had been officially made legal by the government back in July of 2010, Apple has still made an effort to halt jailbreaking. NBC reports Apple has told the U.S Copyrights Office the following:

App Store Nearing 10 Billion Downloads

Apple's App Store has had unprecedented success since its release in July of 2008. 2011 marks the App Store's 3rd birthday, and it looks like Apple will celebrate by hitting 10,000,000,000 downloads. The App Store has averaged over 3 billion downloads per year since 2008. As a comparison, it took iTunes 8 years to reach that same level of success.

In fact, just last year, iTunes celebrated in the same fashion with its own 10 billion downloads countdown. The lucky person that downloaded the 10 billionth song received a $10,000 iTunes gift card.

The one billionth App Store app was downloaded in April of 2009, which shows exponential growth for Apple's platform. As the numbers approach 10 billion, another iTunes user will be lucky enough to receive a $10,000 iTunes gift card...

Microsoft Claims that Apple Can’t Trademark “App Store”, Proceeds to Throw a Legal Hissy Fit

What do you do when your company has 66 billion dollars in revenue from last year? Invest in lots of hot startup companies and acquire more talented employees? No. You hire a highly-paid team of lawyers to file a pathetic motion for trademark denial to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

That's exactly what the giant industry grandfather, Microsoft, has done. Apple has already trademarked the phrase, "There's an app for that." But Microsoft doesn't think that Apple should have the rights to also trademark the term "App Store."

Although it's unclear as to whether Microsoft will win this appeal, it seems that Apple would have a stronger case. After all, the App Store has practically become a household name...
