iPhone Now Available on 200 Carriers

The iPhone just won't quit. After five years of being on the market, Apple's smartphone is now available on 200 carriers worldwide. Sales are estimated to stay strong, and Apple should be on track to unveil a new iPhone this fall.

Since March of this year, Apple has gone from 186 carriers to 200 worldwide. The iPhone is available on the two largest carriers in the United States, AT&T and Verizon, as well. Apple is making aggressive moves to get the iPhone on as many carriers as possible across the globe.

New in iOS 5: Panoramic Photo Feature?

The list of additions in iOS 5 seems to get longer by the minute. While Apple's WWDC keynote stated that there are over 200 new features in the upcoming software update, Scott Forstall and company only touched on 10 of them.

The remaining 190+ features are left for developers and beta testers to stumble upon, as everyone else awaits the software's official release this fall. The latest find seems to suggest that iOS 5 will give users the ability to capture panoramic photos...

New iCloud Feature Gives Banned Apps their Second Wind

It appears that the App Store iOS application has received a nice little update. Users are now allowed to re-download previously purchased applications via iCloud, even ones that have been banned by Apple.

These are titles that were accepted into the App Store at one point, but have since been removed due to violation of App Store Guidelines, or simply because Apple said so. But folks longing to play banished apps like iTris again just might be in luck ...

Sprint iPhone in Advanced Testing Stage?

Apple made headlines earlier this year when they finally took their iPhone to a 2nd U.S. carrier. The popular smartphone had been an AT&T-only device since its inception in 2007, so needless to say users were glad to finally have an option.

But what about Sprint customers? Will they ever see an iPhone offered by their carrier? It doesn't take a magic 8 ball to know that all signs point to yes, but we've recently heard more "confirmation" that a Sprint-branded iPhone exists...

Apple Taps OmniVision to Provide 8MP Camera Sensors for iPhone 5

The time for Apple to announce a new iPhone at this year's developer's conference has come, and gone. The rumors of a delayed iPhone refresh rang true this week, as no new hardware was unveiled during the keynote.

While we're growing tired of these supply chain rumors, each bit of gossip helps to paint a picture of what Apple's next generation smartphone may look like. The most recent tidbit aligns with previous suggestions that the iPhone 5 will house a better camera...

48 Hours in – What Apple Needs to Fix in iOS 5

So here we are, two days after Apple released the first beta of its feature-packed iOS 5 mobile operating system. This also means we've had 48 hours to play with test out iOS 5 on both iPads and iPhones of varying specification and we've come to some conclusions. While the OS is a surprisingly stable first effort, there are still some rough edges to smooth out.

Here are a few of the things we've discovered over the last couple of days - perhaps this will put you off installing the beta considering there doesn't appear to be a way to go back to good ol' iOS 4.3.3...

Apple Changes App Store Submission Guidelines, No More DUI Apps

Last month, Apple's VP of software technology, Bud Tribble, participated in a U.S. Senate hearing on mobile privacy. Although the conference was focused on consumer location tracking, at one point the conversation turned to Apple's App Store policies.

The senate expressed their disappointment with the Cupertino company for allowing applications like Fuzz Alert in their App Store, and gave Apple a month to do something about it...

FaceTime to Go 3G in iOS 5, Carrier-Pending of Course

I'm sure most of you have seen the T-Mobile commercials that poke fun at the iPhone 4's inability to make video calls outside of a Wi-Fi area. The tagline at the end of the ads is always "Introducing the new T-Mobile MyTouch 4G, video chat without needing Wi-Fi."

Although the commercials don't account for services like Skype or jailbreakers using the My3G utility, they are otherwise spot-on. Apple's popular FaceTime video chat service has been restricted to Wi-Fi usage since its inception last year, but that could all change in iOS 5...

Nuance Voice Integration Not Currently in iOS 5, But There’s Still Hope

Apple unveiled a truckload of iOS 5 features at WWDC on Monday, but one major thing was missing: Nuance voice integration. There was a strong series of rumors leading right up to the keynote that claimed iOS 5 would boast huge improvements in voice integration.

Unfortunately, no voice-related features were previewed during Monday's keynote, and the first iOS 5 developer beta has no voice additions to speak of.

Has Apple abandoned their partnership with Nuance in iOS? Or will we still see deeper voice integration in iOS 5 before it's released to the public in the next few months?

Apple Didn’t Tell Carriers About iMessage, Watch Out SMS?

Apple's wireless carrier partners were apparently just as surprised as we were when Apple unveiled its new messaging client, iMessage, at yesterday's WWDC keynote. Reportedly, Apple didn't bother to give carriers a heads up that they were introducing a new, media-rich messaging client before the actual presentation to the public.

Wireless carriers are the ones that will actually be handling the transfer of messages/photos/videos in iMessage over 3G. Apple demonstrated its classic attitude by not even bothering to give carriers a heads up about iMessage. What Apple wants, Apple gets.

iOS 5 & iCloud – A Summary of The New Hotness

It's been a hectic day or so here at iDB towers and we're sure we aren't the only ones. Yesterda's WWDC kickoff provided more than a few talking points, with iOS 5 and iCloud being two of the biggest. Granted OS X Lion is one fine looking piece of software, but for us it's the mobile stuff that gets the pulse racing.

This post will be a little roundup of just a few of the most important new things we've learned today, with links to some more in-depth coverage inside the iDB content vaults. So, without further ado, let us begin...

Photo Stream Makes Manually Syncing Photos a Thing of the Past

Syncing photos from your iPhone to your desktop and other devices has always been a bit of a pain. Most iPhone users have taken to services like DropBox to upload photos to their desktop, to avoid the old plug-and-play method.

What if you wanted to show off your iPhone photos on your iPad? In the past you had to upload the photos to your desktop and then sync them to your iPhone using iTunes. The new iCloud feature Photo Stream takes away all of the headache with instant, wireless photo syncing...
