Ericsson sues Apple in UK, Germany and Netherlands over alleged patent infringement

Swedish telecommunications giant Ericsson has extended its patent lawsuit against Apple to Europe, filing separate lawsuits in the United Kingdom, Germany and the Netherlands over alleged patent infringement, Reuters reported Friday.

Ericsson is alleging that Apple has been using its patents without a legitimate license. It unloaded legal barrage against the iPhone maker over the same matter in the United States in February 2015.

The world’s largest maker of wireless networks, Stockholm-based Ericsson owns many patents covering 2G, 3G and 4G LTE cellular technology.

At the heart of the Apple Watch is Apple's in-house designed 'S1’ component that literally puts an entire computer architecture onto a single chip — an industry term you're looking for is system-in-package (SiP) design.

A recent teardown analysis by ABI Research has managed to identify 512MB of RAM, an ARM-based CPU, a Broadcom Wi-Fi module, an accelerometer and gyroscope, along with a few other components, packed inside the S1.

Today, semiconductor experts over at Chipworks have updated their teardown of the S1 package with a few interesting tidbits related to the type of process technology used while revealing some rather unique design solutions making such small yet powerful package possible.

First released in the late 1990s on the Nokia 6110, this innovative, all-consuming game with monochrome graphics and stupendously simple concept of not crashing the snake while trying to eat fruit is a testament of timeless design. Now Snake's original creator Taneli Armanto has teamed up with Rumilus Design to bring back the joy of the classic game in a modern take on Snake.

Titled Snake Rewind, the game is scheduled to hit iOS, Android and Windows Phone platforms globally on next Thursday, May 14, 2015.

Apple’s op-chief Jeff Williams confirmed to speak at second Code Conference

Jeff Williams, Apple's Senior Vice President of Operations and the guy in charge of the development of the Apple Watch, is scheduled to speak at Re/code's Code Conference later this month, the publication confirmed Thursday morning.

The second Code Conference runs from May 26 to May 28 in Rancho Palos Verdes, California — just two weeks ahead of Apple's annual developer conference serving as a launchpad for iOS/OS X platform advances.

At last year's inaugural Code Conference, Apple originally planned on dispatching its online services and software engineering chiefs, Eddy Cue and Craig Federighi. But the $3 billion Beats buy had Apple change its mind and replace Federighi with Beats co-founder and music mogul Jimmy Iovine, who mostly discussed the Beats acquisition at the event.

Apple Pay debuting at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas by early June

Apple Pay is coming to Las Vegas hotels next month, but not for gambling, and The Cosmopolitan is leading the way. According to the hotel-casino's official announcement cited by Casino City Times, by early June the resort’s front desk, concierge, restaurants and bars will accept Apple's wireless payment method.

Cosmopolitan chief marketing officer, Lisa Marchese, states that “the arrival of Apple Pay on the Las Vegas Strip is a natural fit, offering increasingly mobile-centric, luxury travelers a streamlined and convenient experience.” The announcement marks the first local casino-resort to accept Apple Pay. The Cosmopolitan is part of Marriott's Autograph Collection of hotels.

Elon Musk, CEO of electric car company Tesla, had kind words for Apple when asked by an analyst during the company's quarterly earnings call on Tuesday if he feared an electric car from Apple, given its large customer base and giant cash pile for plenty of research and development spending.

"I actually hope Apple gets into the car business, that would be great," the outspoken Musk said, showing no concern for the rumors that Apple has plans to launch an electric car in the coming years.

Apple granted design patent for Apple Watch, probably to be used in future lawsuits

The US Patent and Trademark Office has granted Apple a design patent for the Apple Watch on Wednesday, covering the look and feel of the wearable that hit the market at the end of April.

The patent covers the entire design of the device, from the screen, sensors, charging apparatus, digital crown, and more. Like with all companies do, Apple filed for the patent to protect itself against competitors, so they can't use an identical design.

Apple releases Safari 8.0.6 with security fixes

Apple this afternoon released Safari updates for Yosemite (8.0.6), Mavericks (7.1.6), and Mountain Lion (6.2.6). The new versions include fixes for multiple memory corruption issues in WebKit, which Apple says could lead to arbitrary code execution or unexpected application termination when visiting a maliciously-crafted website.

Apple on Wednesday launched a new web ad campaign for its struggling iPad, highlighting ways the tablet can change the way people do things. A new microsite on the company's website showcases a variety of iPad apps that can help with things such as cooking, learning and more.

Much like Apple's previous 'Your Verse' campaign, the message of "Everything changes with iPad" is that the tablet can be helpful in a number of situations. The company has long been trying to convince potential customers that the iPad can be used as more than an entertainment device.
