ElectraTV now supports tvOS 11.0-11.4.1 in version 1.3.2, adds several bug fixes & improvements

On Wednesday, the Electra Team announced an update to the ElectraTV jailbreak tool for the Apple TV, officially bringing it up to version 1.3.2 to match that of the iOS version of the tool.

In a Tweet shared this morning by the Electra Team, we learn that ElectraTV 1.3.2 now supports tvOS 11.0-11.4.1 thanks to a port shared by @nitoTV and @Jaywalker. Furthermore, the update brings bug fixes and improvements:

PremiumPlay enables AirPlay streaming in apps that normally don’t support it

If you own an Apple TV, then you might be familiar with Apple’s convenient AirPlay streaming feature. With it, you can wirelessly stream content from your iOS device(s) to your Apple TV for enjoyment on the big screen; unfortunately, some apps prevent you from doing this.

Enter PremiumPlay, a new jailbreak tweak created by iOS developer Tony Kraft that enables AirPlay streaming in apps that typically wouldn’t support it.

nitoTV package installer for tvOS released

It's taken a long time to reach a state of readiness, but it looks like it's been worth the wait. As we predicted in our Let's Talk Jailbreak podcast yesterday, a release for the Apple TV was very much on the way. Sure enough, Kevin Bradley, also known as nitoTV, has just released the initial version of his eponymous tool, nitoTV for tvOS.

Jailbreak update: a summary of current tools

In times gone by, jailbreaks would come in the form of one tool per firmware range. Whoever got there first would release, and that release would be the standard. As we've moved from secret tools to public exploits, developers are free to seize upon vulnerabilities as they become public and try to make a jailbreak out of them, resulting in multiple tools for the same firmware. These tools often have different advantages and limitations, and can become hard to differentiate. In this article, we'll do our best to summarise the current tools, as well as how they differ from the rest.

LiberTV gets an update, now jailbreaks up to tvOS 11.1

Avid jailbreakers are somewhat spoilt this Christmas. Having had an end-of-life iOS 10 32-bit tool by tihmstar, and an iOS 11 tool too, the gifts just keep on coming. The Apple TV 4 and 4K have been brought into the fold, with a tvOS counterpart to Jonathan Levin's LiberiOS, called LiberTV.

How to block automatic updates and prompts on non-jailbroken Apple TV 4 and 4K

With the release of Ian Beer's new exploit, some hope for a future Apple TV 4/4K jailbreak has appeared. The exploit will theoretically work on firmwares up to and including tvOS 11.1, but not 11.2 and higher. For this reason, I advised in my jailbreak guide that Apple TV 4/4K users who want to have a chance of jailbreaking manually restore now to tvOS 11.1, before it goes unsigned. You can use our guide on the topic to do so.

Enable AirPlay in apps that block it with PremiumPlay

A lot of people rely on AirPlay to stream media from their handsets to their Apple TV or other AirPlay-enabled devices. Unfortunately, some apps, like those provided by TV providers, seem to purposely block the AirPlay function so you can’t stream to the big screen.

As I’m sure many people are peeved by this deliberate block of standard iOS functionality, a new jailbreak tweak called PremiumPlay by iOS developer Tony Kraft provides a way around it.

How to make SSH persistent on the liberTV jailbreak for Apple TV 4

If you've been tinkering around with your Apple TV 4 jailbroken on tvOS 10 with liberTV, you may have noticed that its built-in SSH client, Dropbear, has a tendency to be purged every so often, requiring it be re-spawned and set up again. This is due to the developer's (admirable) desire to retain all jailbreak-related files in temporary folders on the filesystem, reducing the risk of bricking your device while fiddling with it to near-zero. If you are confident enough to move a few files out of their temporary folder however, you can easily get your SSH client up and running persistently, avoiding those tedious reconfigurations which otherwise occur.

How to install Kodi on Apple TV 4

Kodi, previously known as XBMC, is an open source media player, and a veritable one-stop shop for all your media needs. Whilst it has been a favourite of Apple TV users for a long time, there is not always a recent tvOS release, and the process to install it has been complex at times. This guide gives the simplest process, without recourse to unofficial distributions.

It doesn't require a jailbreak, and should work on both tvOS 10 and tvOS 9.
