Skype receives its iOS 7 makeover

You can blame Microsoft-owned Skype for missing the train on stickers, games and other popular messaging features (sans video messages), but the application still stands out as the most popular VoIP software in use to this date. Skype wasn't among the list of third-party apps that were immediately updated with the new design following the September 18 iOS 7 release, so today both the iPhone and iPad clients have finally received a nice little refresh bringing the iOS 7 look and feel along with a few minor enhancements...

Google Search app gaining Reminders, ‘OK Google’ activation, push notifications and more

Google today invited a bunch of reporters to a garage where the Internet giant started it all, a convenient setting given Google Search turns fifteen tomorrow.

The company's SVP of Search Amit Singhal let us in on some notable updates concerning the mobile Search app for iOS and Android. For starters, the new version sports a refreshed user interface and such enhancements like new comparison filters.

More importantly, the iOS app will gain push notifications for reminders that will pop up on your screen when due. You'll be also able to use the 'OK Google' phrase for hands-free Google Search access on your iOS devices, the company said, and more...

Instagram updated with iOS 7 style UI, larger and higher resolution photos

Joining the growing trend of revamping App Store software for iOS 7 look and feel, Facebook-owned Instagram just rushed out a new version of its iPhone and iPod touch app. It's bringing with it flattened, minimalistic design focused on edge-to-edge images and videos. On the downside, this Instagram release skimps on headline new frameworks (that's why it feels rushed out) which Apple created to help developers tap new iOS 7 technologies.

Nonetheless, it's a nice little update and fans should be happy that Instagram no longer looks out of place and behaves like a good citizen on iOS 7...

Camera+ update brings exposure compensation, additional sharing options and more

My favorite iOS camera app, Taptaptap's Camera+, has received a major, major update this morning. In addition to the flattened appearance that removes clutter and gets rid of skeuomorphism in favor of iOS-friendly look and feel, Camera+ 4 can now (finally) post images to social services beyond Facebook, Twitter and Flickr.

Specifically, you can publish your touch ups to Instagram, Evernote and Dropbox. Also new: the ability to print images wirelessly using any AirPrint-compatible printer connected to the same network as your iPhone, iPod touch and iPad device and more.

We're only getting started so I've included the full list of changes and enhancements in Camera+ 4.0 right past the fold...

iTunes 11.1 is out with iTunes Radio, Podcast Stations, Genius Shuffle

In another sign that iOS 7 release is imminent, Apple has just posted the iTunes 11.1 update which brings out not only iOS 7 compatibility, but a few new features, including the long-expected, ad-supported iTunes Radio streaming, in addition to Podcast Stations, the new Genius Shuffle capability, support for iOS 7 device sync and more.

You're going to love Genius Shuffle, "a magical new way to experience your music library" that plays songs that go great together from iCloud.

And if you're into podcasts, iTunes 11.1 lets you create automagically-updated custom stations of your favorite podcasts. I've included the full changelog right after the break...

Amazon Instant Video iOS app now does AirPlay

Amazon released its Instant Video client for the iPhone and iPad in August 2012 as a way for Apple customers to access its growing library of movies and television shows from their iPhone, iPad and iPod touch devices. The online retail giant hasn't been updating the software much, apart from June's update with visual tweaks and personal recommendations for movies and television shows based on your past viewing habits.

My biggest gripe with any type of software that does video is the absence of AirPlay streaming support. If you get your entertainment from Amazon, you should update your Amazon Instant Video installation to the latest version which not only enables Apple's AirPlay technology, but also includes a few other nice-to-haves...

Faster Facebook Messenger with improved scrolling now available

It's been over a month since we've stumbled upon any solid piece of news concerning Facebook's standalone Messenger iPhone app. Last time we heard, Facebook has added the ability to pick photos from your Instagram albums to send to Messenger friends.

Actually, that was the only major development concerning the software since May 2012. In response to Wednesday's launch of iOS 7, the social networking giant on Monday pushed an iOS 7-ready version of Messenger with improved scrolling, faster startup times and more...

Google Play Books gets copy-paste and Single Sign-On support

With less than 48 hours until iOS 7 is let out of the cage, Apple's iOS developers have been tremendously busy updating their iPhone and iPad apps with iOS 7 compatibility. Needles to say, we're expecting a brand new and flattened version of the company's own iBooks app and its other downloadable iPhone and iPad programs, such as the free iLife/iWork suite. But those who get their electronic books from Google, however, should download the newly updated Play Books app.

Not only does it include handy support for copy and paste, there's the tremendously useful unified account sign-in feature which lets you skip typing altogether and instead log in with your Google Account real fast...

Twitter’s third major redesign to follow shortly after Wednesday’s iOS 7 launch

A lot of iPhone and iPad apps have been updated - or are receiving iOS 7 bug fixes and related updates - ahead of the software's general availability this Wednesday.

And while the micro-blogging service Twitter recently started embedding tweets right into its #music app (along with the ability to reply and re-tweet them), its plans for an iOS 7-focused update have been some time in the making but kept secret, until today.

According to people in the know and some deeply entrenched sources, Twitter is waiting until some time after iOS 7 is out to show off its brand new design, the third major revamp in Twitter's seven-year history...

Realmac announces Clear for iOS 7 will be a separate new app

Realmac Software, the guys who brought you the popular to-do iOS app Clear, the iOS camera app called Analog Camera and the gorgeous scrapbook app for the Mac, Ember, today shared their roadmap for Clear. As iOS 7 gets its official release date - September 18 - developers are busy updating their warez with the matching flattened look and support for new technologies Apple added to it mobile operating system.

As Apple still doesn't allows developers to introduce paid upgrades to existing App Store apps, some developers - Realmac Software included - have opted to re-release their apps as a separate, iOS 7-specific download...

VLC 2.1 arrives with souped up subtitles, FTP web downloads and lots more

After a two-year hiatus from the App Store, VideoLan's comprehensive media player for iOS devices, VLC, has finally made a comeback in July.

Rewritten from the ground up to take advantage of modern media technologies, the new VLC brought as a revamped interface along with its trademark support for a bunch of non-iOS media formats such as .mkv files. Following on the initial re-release, the team yesterday posted a major VLC update.
