Crystals turns geometric art into 3D wallpaper

Lory Gil ∙ August 7, 2014

Cool-looking wallpaper is a big deal now that iOS 7 has made it possible for users to experience the parallax effect on our Home and Lock screens. I’m always looking for new and interesting apps that will allow me to alter and manipulate existing images into something unique for my background.

Crystals is a polygon creation app that lets you manipulate triangles and turn them into interesting fractal patterns. You can then use your intricate new design as a wallpaper for your iPhone or iPad…

For the first time ever since debuting on the App Store back in the summer of 2013, a pair of excellent drawing and painting apps for the iPhone and iPad by Autodesk have gone free.

Both SketchBook Mobile — a professional-grade painting and drawing application designed for the iPhone and iPod touch — and SketchBook Pro for iPad— an authentic, natural drawing experience based on the same paint engine as its desktop counterpart — are available free of charge, for a limited time, courtesy of Apple's weekly Free App of the Week promo on the App Store.

That's a cool $7 saving right off the bat as SketchBook Pro normally sells for $4.99 and SketchBook Mobile is regularly $1.99...

FX Photo Studio 6.0 for iPhone brings iOS 7 overhaul, new filters and sharing options and more

Christian Zibreg ∙ Updated October 13, 2018

FX Photo Studio by MacPhun used to be my go-to iPhone photography tool, but I was forced to switch to other apps because it looked like the team had ceased further development (last update was in February of last year).

I'm glad I was wrong about that. As of today, the iPhone edition has been resurrected. Basically everything has changed and MacPhun bills it as "the biggest update in its four-year history".

Now available in the App Store as a free update for existing users, the new FX Photo Studio 6.0 of course sports an iOS 7-friendly user interface along with a brand new engine and tons of other new features.

All of the hallmarks of FX Photo Studio have been preserved and enhanced in this update, including great filters, special editing tools and sharing features...

Cody Lee ∙ Updated April 18, 2018

Pinterest pushed out a new build of its mobile client this evening, bringing the iOS app to version 3.8. The update offers only one new feature, but it has the potential to change the way people use the service: messaging.

That’s right, now whenever someone sends you a Pin, you have the ability to reply back with either a Pin of your own, or a direct message. It works with multiple users too, making planning a group trip or project a breeze…

Blend Music Player brings a new music listening experience to the iPhone

Lory Gil ∙ Updated November 19, 2018

Since the dawn of the App Store, developers have been creating new ways for us to visually enjoy a music-listening experience. Apple’s stock Music app may sound good, but it lacks the flare and beauty that third-party developers have been able to capitalize on.

Blend Music Player is one of those apps that looks good, sounds good, and offers a number of features that go above and beyond Apple’s Music app…

Blood Bowl review: ‘Fantasy Football’ takes on a whole new meaning

Lory Gil ∙ Updated January 27, 2019

The Warhammer series dates back to the mid 1980s when the role-playing adventure game and the tabletop miniatures game won the hearts of fantasy fiction fans. The football-inspired board game based in the Warhammer Fantasy setting made its debut in 1987 and became a PC video game by the mid-1990s.

Blood Bowl for the iPad is the mobile adaptation of the original PC game. You can play as either Humans or Orcs as you compete in this season’s tournament for supremacy. Just watch out for the opposing team. Killing your opponent works better than stealing the ball does. We’ve got a game review of Blood Bowl for you today…

Notifyr app goes free: receive iOS notifications on your Mac

Timothy Reavis ∙ Updated January 27, 2018

Today seems to be the day for app discounts, as Apple is giving away Rise Alarm Clock, and now the developer of Notifyr, an app for receiving iPhone push notifications on your Mac, is giving his app away for free every other day for a week.

We first wrote about Notifyr on its launch back in May, and it took the tech community somewhat by surprise, as many thought Apple would remove it from the App Store per one of their many regulations. Regardless, it's been available for download at a $3.99 price tag up until today, as Notifyr has gone free for a limited time.

Foursquare revamps mobile app around Yelp-like features and focus on location discovery

Christian Zibreg ∙ August 6, 2014

Foursquare, the popular location-based social networking service, recently announced plans to remove social features and check-ins from its original mobile client.

Thus, Swarm was born.

By striping the mobile client off unnecessary features, the logic went, Foursquare aimed to provide its users with a lightweight app that would have a strong focus on location discovery.

After announcing the redesigned new app and showing off a new logo two weeks ago, the new Forusquare 8.0 for iPhone is now available in the App Store. It "learns what you like and leads you to places you love," as per the blurb, and is a lot like Yelp now.
