FX Photo Studio by MacPhun used to be my go-to iPhone photography tool, but I was forced to switch to other apps because it looked like the team had ceased further development (last update was in February of last year).

I’m glad I was wrong about that. As of today, the iPhone edition has been resurrected. Basically everything has changed and MacPhun bills it as “the biggest update in its four-year history”.

Now available in the App Store as a free update for existing users, the new FX Photo Studio 6.0 of course sports an iOS 7-friendly user interface along with a brand new engine and tons of other new features.

All of the hallmarks of FX Photo Studio have been preserved and enhanced in this update, including great filters, special editing tools and sharing features…

In addition to the new look and new ways to navigate through effects, FX Photo Studio 6.0 offers great flexibility in terms of touching up your photos.

You’ll appreciate a much faster image processing, courtesy of the new engine that has been rewritten from the ground up. As seen top of post, there are a bunch of new filter categories to choose from.

The vast majority of filter packs are included free of charge, with the exception of the ‘Color Strokes,’ ‘Color Lenses’ and ‘Hollywood FX’ effect packs, available as a $0.99 In-App Purchase each (or get them all in a $1.99 ‘All Star Pack’ upgrade).

As you can see above, the app also offers some fancy text labels and text effects.

Notice a few new sharing features (below).

I’m also loving a new smart algorithm for the ‘Random’ tool. If you get lost in dozens of effects and filters, FX Photo Studio pro can pick the ones that work best for any particular image, which could be a great starting point for additional touch ups.

The $4.99 iPad-only edition hasn’t received iOS 7 style makeover yet.

Last updated in November 2013, FX Photo Studio for OS X is $9.99 in the Mac App Store (OS X 10.6 or later is required).
