New Apple TV software with AirPlay enhancements due September 18

While some watchers have been expecting Apple TV news during yesterday's keynote, Apple instead chose to talk exclusively about the new iPhone 5s/5c and the revamped iOS 7 software. Apple's been testing a new version of the software powering its $99 set-top box since iOS 7 was introduced at WWDC this June. We've seen some of the new features such as a Conference Room Mode for presenters.

Moreover, earlier this week the AllThingsD blog shed more light on improved AirPlay support allowing users to watch the media they own on someone else's box without having to log in with their iTunes Store account. Today, a new report alleged that the final version of the updated firmware will hit Apple TVs a week from today, on September 18, 2013...

Planetbeing provides update on iOS 7 jailbreak status

Yesterday, the Evad3rs' @planetbeing said that the team behind the Evasi0n jailbreak for iOS 6 was starting some initial investigation into the possibility of an iOS 7 jailbreak. It doesn't look like they plan on wasting much time in the process.

In an update provided via Twitter, planetbeing states that he's achieved unsigned userland code execution using some of the stuff the team has held in reserve. As mentioned yesterday, the Evad3rs are now on a reconnaissance mission to see what exploits still work with iOS 7.

Can't get enough of the new iPhones? Yeah, us either. So as you can imagine, we were excited to see that Apple has posted three new promotional videos for the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c on its YouTube channel this evening.

While the iPhone 5s turned some heads today with its new 64-bit A7 processor, redesigned camera, and fingerprint-sensing Home button, the star of the show was clearly the iPhone 5c. After years of rumors and speculation, the more affordable plastic iPhone became a reality.

The device itself is essentially iPhone 5 hardware, repackaged in a polycarbonate plastic shell and priced at less than $100 (with contract). And with its chamfered edges and various bright colorways, it's actually a pretty sharp-looking device. Here, check out our 5c gallery...

As expected, Apple unveiled two new smartphones today. The first was the plastic iPhone 5c, and the second the iPhone 5s. And if you've been paying attention to the rumor mill over the past several months, there shouldn't have been any surprises.

The 5c comes in various bright colors, and is equipped with hardware comparable to that of the iPhone 5. And the 5s of course looks very similar to its predecessor, but it includes a faster processor, better camera and a built-in fingerprint sensor.

You have to admit that even though it sports the same design as last year, and new features were kept to a minimum, the iPhone 5s is still a very impressive handset–both from a design and performance standpoint. Here, take a look at this gallery...

Why it’s an iPhone 5s and not an iPhone 5S

Apple has again changed the way the iPhone's name is spelled out on paper. If you can remember, back when the first incremental upgrade to the iPhone line was released, Apple typed it out like this on paper: iPhone 3G S. Yes, there was a space between the "3G" and the "S" — Thankfully, Apple eventually caved in, or just didn't care enough to make a big deal out of it when we refused to spell it that way. The iPhone 4S lacked the space between the number and letter, and all was well with the world.

Now, on the day of the unveiling of two new Apple devices which both sport a suffixed alphabetical character, debate ensues once again. This time, though, the argument isn't about spaces, it's about cases. And I'm not talking about the hideous swiss cheese cases it's trying to push on unsuspecting iPhone 5c adopters, I'm talking about textual case — the upper and lower variety.

Apple has ditched the upper case call letters in favor of a lower case letter. That means that the iPhone 5C isn't the iPhone 5C at all, it's the iPhone 5c. That also means that the iPhone 5S is now the iPhone 5s. Apple's even gone retroactive on us and replaced the iPhone 4S with the iPhone 4s (same device, different name on paper).

The question is, why? Why would Apple go through the process of confusing us bloggers, (because let's face it, we're probably the only ones who care about this type of stuff) and go and change it again? The answer to that question is probably a lot more straightforward than it first appears.

Apple likely disappointed spec-watchers everywhere when it announced today that it kept the camera on the iPhone 5s at 8-megapixels. This means that, on paper at least, the handset is inferior to those with 12, 13 and 41mp sensors.

But as you'll see in these sample photos, taken with an actual iPhone 5s, that's just not the case. With its five-element Apple-designed lens, F2.2 aperture and 15% larger active sensor area, the 5s will hold its own among the best of them...

Those who dared saying the "the C in iPhone 5C is for Cheap" were proved to be wrong. As it stands, the iPhone 5c is anything but cheap. Pretty much an iPhone 5 in a new shell, the iPhone 5c is Apple's most colorful iPhone yet.

The iPhone 5c tech specs don't have anything very exciting, especially if you've already looked at the iPhone 5s specs, which we published not long ago. In an effort to document the release of the iPhone 5c, we will post the device's tech specs here for posterity...

The evad3rs are investigating iOS 7 for possible exploits

Now that iOS 7 GM has been officially released, the evad3rs — the team responsible for bringing us the iOS 6 evasi0n jailbreak last winter — have started looking into iOS 7. The team, according to prominent iOS hacker and team member @planetbeing, are now in a reconnaissance phase to see which exploits, if any, still work with iOS 7.

This is being done on existing devices like the iPhone 5, iPhone 4S, etc. The new devices, especially the iPhone 5S with its 64-bit processor, will presumably be another massive hurdle to overcome once they launch later this month. Regardless of what the final outcome may eventually be, this is great news for those of us who would like a jailbreak for iOS 7.

The iPhone 5s might look like an iPhone 5 on the outside, but a few things have changed on the inside, making it, as you've probably guessed, the best iPhone yet.

Apple usually doesn't brag too much about specs because, as my wife says, "it's not about the size of your processor, it's about what you do with it." All jokes aside, even though Apple dropped a few tech specs today, we wanted to gather them up all under one roof.

More importantly, we have listed the iPhone 5s tech specs below for historical purposes. In several years from now, when the iPhone 5s is nowhere to be found on Apple's website, this post will help us have a look back on the iPhone 5s and its specs in one convenient place...
