Your Top 5 Cydia Minimalist Essentials

We all know the story. There's so many can't-live-without apps in Cydia. But once you install everything, your iPhone becomes a mess of apps competing for (system) power.

A few months later, you've sacrificed speed for functionality. Here's my list of the 5 Cydia downloads that I could be happy with...

Want an Open Source Replacement for iTunes? Well Sorta

On May 28, 2010 Sebastien wrote an article on the fact that anyone running Ubuntu Lucid Lynx could potentially access your iPhone's data with ease getting around the PIN.

Well, starting with Ubuntu 10.04 you can actually access your entire iPhone without a jailbreak or unlock. The developers of Ubuntu found a way to build this entirely into the operating system itself and it's just a matter of plugging in your iPhone and 'bam' instant access. Ubuntu can not only access the entire iPhone storage but the default mp3 player software called Rythmbox can access all the music and even sync music with the iPhone from an Ubuntu PC...

What Will Your First 4.1 Jailbreak App Be?

Now that LimeRa1n is out, lucky (debatable) Windows owners get to jailbreak. What's the first thing you installed? Or for the rest of us, what's your first going to be?

Or, let's say you're on a desert island, and you had just jailbroken your iPhone with limera1n. You can grab ONE app from Cydia, and then lose your ability to open Cydia again.

What's your one jailbreak app or tweak that you've been lusting for while anxiously awaiting a 4.1 jailbreak and reading the new tweak articles in this blog? What is that ONE package you can't live without?

FCC Investigating Cellphone “Bill Shock”

According to an article in yesterda's Washington Post, the FCC is finally going to do extensive investigating into cellphone "bill shock".

Over the last few years, more and more customers have been complaining about overages, third party charges and various other mystery charges that appear on their monthly cellphone bills...

Want Video Calls on Your iPhone Over 3G? Then it’s Time to Tango!

Tango Video Calling by Sgiggle, Inc. (available free in the App Store) is a video-calling app that’s similar to FaceTime, but has a few more features that gives it a definite edge over Apple’s built-in video calls.

The most notable difference?  Tango works over 3G.  This is often the complaint I hear most about FaceTime.  It’s been promised 3G functionality is coming to FaceTime… someday.  We also heard that about tethering and how long did that take?

Will GreenPois0n Be a Silver Bullet?

I am sure everyone now knows that the Chronic Dev Team has announced the new iDevice jailbreak code-named Greenpois0n will be released this Sunday 10/10/10 at 10:10:10am GMT.

The even bigger news is that according to the team, Greenpois0n will be the silver bullet that will make iDevices jailbroken forever. The team states that this new tool will be able to keep Apple from reversing the jailbreak on a permanent basis...

Why I Loved Rock (and How I Could Love Cydia)

Rock's dead. We all know this. Saurik told us that the Rock developers cut corners and did things the wrong way. Still, Rock did do a few things right that would complement Cydia well.

The Real Experiences

Rock.app was a real experience. It was snappy and clean. It had a colorful and eye-friendly theme. Most importantly, it was usable during fetches and reloads. When Rock opened, here's what happened: you view the home page, navigate a bit, while fetches occurred with a small unobtrusive status indicator. Once completed, a quick refresh interrupts you, then you're good to go. You navigate to updates and the results are preloaded. The page loads quickly, if not instantly.

GreenPois0n Lockscreen Makes Waiting for iPhone 4.1 Jailbreak (un)Bearable

I need it.  You need it.  We all need the 4.1 GreenPois0n jailbreak!  To help us wait out these final days, a guy who appropriately goes by the name of “Sadist” has a GreenPois0n battery, lockscreen and slider theme available in Cydia.

Except after installing it I realized it just makes me more impatient for the new jailbreak, especially when the slider taunts “Inject the Pois0n.”  So he’s not just a sadist, he’s a tease...

Hulu+ App Store Reviews: Fending off the Naysayers

Hulu+ just updated their app last week, so I thought this would be a good time to address the absurd amount of negative reviews they have in the App Store.

I love Hulu+.  I got my invite August 1st and have been using the app on my iPhone 4 several times a week to watch shows — catching up with Glee while at work (shhh!), and watching the first season of Modern Family at the gym (FYI—laughing on the treadmill will immediately provoke stares and glares.)  I think the Hulu service is smart and having it readily accessible on my iPhone 4 is convenient.

So why are there so many negative reviews of it in the App Store (It’s currently at 1.5 stars)?  Most comments seem to be some variation of these complaints:

What Made You Decide to Jailbreak?

When I first got my iPhone, in December of 2008, it wasn’t long before I heard about jailbreaking. My friend, who didn’t even have an iPhone, told me I should jailbreak to do “cool stuff” to it. His friends had done it, and he thought I’d like it.

Always suspicious of peer pressure, I resisted. Jailbreaking sounded scary, dangerous, and maybe even illegal. Why would I do such a thing when the iPhone was already so awesomely awesome?

Weathericon App Subtly Reminds You That You’re Freezing Every Time You Glance at Lockscreen

One of the better jailbreak apps is WeatherIcon, available in Cydia. This app allows two things: a temperature display in the status bar, and live updates/changes to your designated weather app icon (Apple’s native weather app, The Weather Channel, Weatherbug, etc...) that reflect current weather conditions. This way you can remember it’s a dapper -14 degrees out without even unlocking your phone.

This is a clean and simple app. The temperature display in the status bar is unobtrusive (though there is an option to include a small image of current weather that takes up a little more space) and the various icon graphics for current weather are hi-res for iPhone 4 and well, accurate. Is it raining outside? Why yes, my iPhone weather icon tells me it is!

Xtand iPhone Dock [Review]

Finding the right way to make the iPhone part of the desktop is important for some of us. Enter the Xtand from JustMobile. While there are plenty of mounts and stands for the iPhone, few of them truly capture the aesthetic functionality blend that makes Apple distinct. The Xtand does just that.

It holds the iPhone landscape or portrait at adjustable angles. The aluminum stand looks very similar to the iMac stand. The stand doesn't block any buttons or connections, gripping perfectly at the four corners of the device. The bottom of the stand features a gripping rubber surface to keep it from moving during use...
