In 2023, Spotify launched an AI-powered digital DJ that could create an endless stream of new music based on your listening history. And now, the company is bringing generative AI to playlists based on simple ChatGPT-style text prompts.

It’s only available in the Spotify beta for iOS and Android to Premium subscribers in the United Kingdom and Australia. Spotify will refine AI playlists based on feedback over the coming months before rolling AI playlists to all users.

Apple will allegedly bring generative AI to iPhone this fall with iOS 18, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported earlier, including AI-generated playlists in the Music app.

How to create Spotify playlists from text prompts

To create a Spotify playlist from a set prompt, choose Your Library in the app, hit the + (plus) button and choose the new AI Playlist option.

You’ll be presented with a list of suggested prompts you can choose from or type your own. According to a press release in the Spotify Newsroom, prompts can reference places, animals, activities, movie characters, colors or emoji.

Spotify provided the following examples:

  • “Sad music for painting dying flowers”
  • “Tracks for horse riding into the sunset”
  • “An indie folk playlist to give my brain a big warm hug”
  • “Relaxing music to tide me over during allergy season”
  • “A playlist that makes me feel like the main character”

Using unrelated things in prompts like current events or specific brands won’t work, Spotift cautions. The same goes for offensive words.

Once presented with an AI-generated playlist, you can preview any track or delete ones you don’t want to be featured. To tweak the playlist, give the algorithm more information to work with by modifying your prompt, like “more pop” or “less upbeat.”

If you don’t like the results, generate a new AI playlist from scratch. To add the playlist to your library, hit Create.
