The release of Proton Mail completes the company’s suite of web and mobile email clients which make use of end-to-end encryption to keep your emails private.
According to the Proton blog, the app is a good platform citizen that supports core features such as light and dark modes, native push notifications, etc.
The software enables you to easily import your existing messages from Outlook or Gmail as well as forward new messages from Gmail to Proton.
The Proton Mail desktop app is now available
The Proton Mail desktop app integrates calendar functionality. Proton argues that an email and calendar app that’s separate from your browser offers additional security benefits, including “protecting your emails or events from rogue browser extensions and allowing automatic updates without relying on your browser.”
The app supports Proton’s new Security Center feature that lets you create disposable emails similar to Apple’s Hide My Email feature for newsletters, shopping notifications, etc. For more on Security Center, visit the Proton website.
The app was created by Proton, a privacy-first startup created in Switzerland in 2014 by a team of scientists who met at CERN, releasing the Proton Mail web app as its first product. The company has since expanded into other software areas, releasing several privacy-focused apps that utilize end-to-end encryption, including its secure cloud storage service.
