Gurman: We might see “several new Macs” at WWDC next week

Apple might unveil several new Macs during its upcoming WWDC keynote, in addition to the rumored mixed-reality headset and new operating systems.

  • The WWDC keynote could be jam-packed with announcements, including “several new Macs” probably powered by variants of Apple’s M2 chips.
  • With new Macs, the rumored headset and new and updated software all getting air time at the WWDC, this should be “one of Apple’s longest” keynotes ever.
  • Apple is also expected to introduce new computers running next-generation M3 chips at the end of this year or early 2024 rather than at the WWDC.

Apple could unveil “several new Macs” at WWDC

This is according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, who published on Twitter his expectations for the WWDC 2023 keynote across three primary focus areas:

  • Several new Macs
  • The mixed-reality headset
  • The new operating systems (xrOS, iOS 17, etc.)

Although Gurman has sources within Apple, he didn’t chalk up the above claims to a particular source, so he might be making an informed guess. Still, Gurman is among the most reliable Apple reporters—it’s never wise to bet against his predictions.

Gurman probably based these predictions on findings by developer Nicolas Alvarez, who on Twitter published images showing references to “Mac10,8,” “Mac14,13” and “Mac14,14” that he discovered in a configuration file for the Find My app.

How many new Macs? Which ones?

“Mac10,8,” “Mac14,13” and “Mac14,14 are all unknown Mac identifiers. While Gurman doesn’t say how many new Macs Apple might unveil at the WWDC, he previously said he expected a new MacBook Air model with a 15-inch screen.

He also said recently that Apple would start accepting trade-ins for three recent Macs on June 5, including the Mac Studio, on the same day the WWDC keynote is scheduled. If a Mac Studio follow-up gets its supposed WWDC unveiling, then the machine should offer Apple’s ‌current M2‌ Max and ‌M2‌ Ultra chips.

For context, the Mac Studio arrived in March 2022, offering the $1,999 (M1 Max) and $3,999 (M1 Pro) configurations. What could be a third Mac unveiled at the WWDC besides the next Mac Studio and 15-inch MacBook Air?

Our money is on M2 iMacs as the current M1-based model date back to April 2021. Of course, Apple still owes us an Apple silicon Mac Pro, which is overdue by a year.

Gurman said Apple was developing an updated 13-inch MacBook Pro and a new “high-end” model earlier, but those should arrive in October or early 2024.
