Rumor: 3 recent Macs to become eligible for Apple trade-ins as new models get unveiled at WWDC

Apple is rumored to start accepting trade-ins for its three recent Mac computers, including the Mac Studio, at the June 5 WWDC keynote. On the same day, Apple might unveil new models, including a possible Mac Studio follow-up.

  • Three Apple silicon Macs introduced in the past year could become eligible for trade-in with Apple on Monday, June 5, the day of the WWDC keynote.
  • The company is expected to announce new Mac hardware during the weeklong developer-focused event, including a MacBook Air with a fifteen-inch screen.
  • Other systems that could be announced during the WWDC keynote talk include refreshed ‌Mac Studio‌ models sporting Apple’s ‌M2‌ Max and ‌M2‌ Ultra chips.

3 new Macs to become available for trade-in on June 5

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman hinted as much in the latest edition of his Power On newsletter for Bloomberg, writing that the Cupertino firm is planning to debut some fresh MacBooks at the WWDC alongside the heavily-rumored AR/VR headset and the accompanying xrOS software platform.

“I’m expecting new Macs at WWDC,” Gurman wrote on his Twitter. He previously said one of the new Macs at WWDC could be a new MacBook Air with a fifteen-inch screen (the current model has a 13-inch display).

He added that Apple will start accepting trade-ins of these Mac models:

  • Mac Studio with M2 Pro and M2 Max
  • 13-inch MacBook Air with M2
  • 13-inch MacBook Pro with M2

Those are all relatively new Macs, released in the past year or so and running the company’s latest M2 chipsets. Gurman says the company will start accepting trade-ins of the above Macs on June 5, which is particularly interesting as June 5 is when the WWDC keynote will be held.

“Read into that as you will,” he added.

A Mac Studio follow-up at the WWDC

Unfortunately, Gurman wouldn’t comment on the other Mac models he expects to see unveiled at this year’s WWDC.

For what it’s worth, he did state in an earlier Power On newsletter that Apple was working on two Mac Studio follow-ups. In the same breath, however, Gurman added that the new Macs unveiled on June 5 “probably won’t boast” Apple’s next-generation M3 chips. At any rate, if the Mac Studio does end up being refreshed at the WWDC, expect configurations with the M2‌ Pro and ‌M2‌ Max chips.

The Mac Studio was unveiled in March 2022, offering the $1,999 (M1 Max) and $3,999 (M1 Pro) configurations. Gurman stated earlier that Apple might prefer to update the Mac Studio with the upcoming M3 chips to avoid cannibalizing an Apple silicon version of the Mac Pro workstation, which is overdue by a year.
