Watch the trailer for the upcoming Apple TV+ psychological thriller ‘Surface’ starring Gugu Mbatha-Raw

Apple TV+ has plenty of thrillers to watch, from Defending Jacbob to Severance, and plenty of other shows in between. But there’s plenty of room for more. And the streaming service has one more on deck that will make its premiere in late July.

The upcoming thriller is called Surface, and it will star Gugu Mbatha-Raw (The Morning Show) as a character named Sophie. We first heard about the upcoming series way back in December of 2020. Then, in June of last year, the production added six new cast members to the project, including Oliver Jackson Cohen (The Haunting of Hill House) and others.

The project is billed as a psychological thriller, which makes sense considering Sophie has suffered a “traumatic head injury” and now suffers from “extreme memory loss.” Here’s the official description, which is paired with the official trailer that Apple TV+ shared today:

Set in high-end San Francisco, Surface, stars Gugu Mbatha-Raw (“The Morning Show”) who also executive produces, as Sophie, a woman who has suffered a traumatic head injury that has left her with extreme memory loss. As Sophie embarks on a quest to put the pieces of her life back together with the help of her husband and friends, she begins to question whether or not the truth she is told is in fact the truth she has lived. Through twists and turns and an unexpected love triangle, this sexy, elevated thriller asks: What if you woke up one day and didn’t know your own secrets?

Surface is set to premiere on Friday, July 29, 2022. The project’s tag line, “Who do you trust when you can’t trust yourself?” certainly sets up a compelling (if not necessarily wholly original) plot. And the trailer sells Mbatha-Raw as a strong lead (which is not surprising at all).

The rest of the cast includes Stephan James (If Beale Street Could Talk), François Arnaud (The Borgias), Marianne Jean-Baptiste (Secrets & Lies), and Ari Graynor (I’m Dying Up Here).

After checking out the first official trailer, what do you think? Will you be checking out Surface when it arrives in July?
