  • Macs running macOS Big Sur suffered from an email attachment bug that would prevent apps such as Mail and Outlook from opening attachments properly.
  • Because macOS Big Sur isn’t the current release, it no longer receives improvements and feature updates aside from bug-fix updates like this one.
  • macOS Mojave, the current release, is free from this email attachment bug.

macOS Big Sur 11.6.7 squishes an email attachment bug

Apple released macOS Big Sur 11.6.7 to the public on June 9, 2022, with a fix for a Mac mail attachment issue in apps such as Apple Mail, Microsoft Outlook and more. This update is only available for systems running Big Sur and can be installed manually via Apple’s Software Update feature in macOS. After you install macOS Big Sur 11.6.7, apps like Mail and Outlook will no longer run into an error when opening attachments. Read: How to reset Apple Mail on iPhone, iPad and Mac

What’s new in macOS Big Sur 11.6.7?

According to the onscreen release notes in Software Update, macOS Big Sur 11.6.7 update addresses an issue that could cause the company’s own Mail app, as well as apps like Microsoft Outlook, to be unable to open attachments. Moreover, this only happens if the app needed to open the file in question is already running on your Mac. Read: How to sort emails in Apple Mail on Mac with macOS Big Sur or later

No new features for Big Sur, just big fixes

Apple’s support document detailing what’s new in the updates for macOS Big Sur doesn’t even include release notes for 11.6.7. Clearly, someone at Apple probably deemed 11.6.7 too minor a release to warrant updating this document. That’s quite understandable because macOS Big Sur is an older release that launched back in 2020. Big Sur currently enjoys limited support from Apple, which means it receives security patches from time to time. The current version, macOS Monterey, will also stop receiving new features after macOS Ventura—the next major release, currently being tested—arrives this fall. And when Monterey becomes available to the public, Monterey too will only continue receiving occasional bug-fix updates.
