HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Five new Mac computers powered by Apple silicon coming in 2022

  • Also coming: A significantly redesigned, M2-powered MacBook Air
  • The Apple silicon transition should be complete by the end of 2022

5 new Apple silicon Macs coming in 2022

The latest tidbit comes from Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman. In the latest edition of his Power On newsletter, Gurman discusses five new Macs he believes are coming next year.

  • A new baseline MacBook Pro with M2
  • A redesigned MacBook Air with M2
  • A high-end iMac all-in-one
  • An updated Mac mini
  • An Apple silicon Mac Pro

Some of those systems aren’t entirely unexpected. For instance, we knew the Mac Pro workstation would get an Apple silicon treatment next year. We also expected updates to the Mac mini and a new iMac to replace the current 27-inch Intel-based model.

As for that supposed new entry-level MacBook Pro configuration and a significantly redesigned MacBook Air, those are pretty curious. Read: Handy tips for macOS beginners

New aseline MacBook Pro, MacBook Air refresh

Currently, the entry-level MacBook Pro is the $1,299 13-inch model which ships with eight gigabytes of memory, 256 gigabytes of storage and the infamous Touch Bar.

Gurman doesn’t clarify whether this rumored new entry-level model would completely replace the $1,299 configuration Apple currently sells or launch alongside it as a new model in the lineup. Perhaps this is a new high-end MacBook Air configuration? And if so, will it be powerful enough to cross the MacBook Pro territory?

Meanwhile, the MacBook Air is getting a significant overhaul and Apple’s M2 chip. Gurman said earlier that a new baseline MacBook Pro and a redesigned MacBook Air would feature Apple’s next-generation M2 chip with up to ten graphics cores and faster performance.

Your dream desktop is being coming in 2022

As for iMacs, 2021 brought us the 24-inch iMac with Apple silicon but the refresh didn’t include the 27-incher. As the most attractive computer from Apple, the 27-inch iMac is Apple’s all-in-one desktop that integrates all the internals behind its massive screen.

To many people, iMac is the ultimate dream desktop. And with the flagship model getting reengineered around Apple silicon, iMac fans who held out on buying the 24-inch model due to screen size will have something to look forward to in 2022.
