Apple’s MagSafe Battery Pack launches for iPhone 12 models

The new portable battery uses MagSafe technology, a series of magnets in the iPhone 12 family, to easily attach to the phone’s back magnetically. All iPhone 12 models are compatible with the accessory, with iOS 14.7 or later required for software support.

Like the versions for older iPhones, the iPhone 12 edition features a Lightning port for up to 15 watts of wireless charging with MagSafe. And thank to support for passthrough charging, you can charge both the battery pack and its iPhone simultaneously. Oh, and you can even charge the accessory through your iPhone as long as the phone itself is plugged into power.

Because this is an Apple product, it tightly integrates with your iPhone to track the status of your battery charge on the lock screen and in the Battery widget. Fast-charging the internal battery, or both it and the phone, requires a USB-C PD 20-watt adapter or higher.

From Apple’s own product listing:

At your desk and need a charge? Just plug a Lightning cable into the MagSafe Battery Pack for up to 15W of wireless charging. Short on time? With a higher than 20W power adapter, you can charge both the MagSafe Battery Pack and your iPhone even faster.

Assuming Apple’s product images are accurate, the accessory appears to pack in a 1,460 mAH battery that certainly won’t recharge your iPhone from dead to 100 percent but will nonetheless come in handy for topping up your charge throughout the day.

The accessory is only available in white color.

The iPhone 12 models were released in October and November 2020 so it’s unclear why Apple’s first-party accessory is a bit late to the party, more so considering the next iPhone is just around the corner. But provided phone dimensions won’t change, the iPhone 12 version of the battery pack should work on your iPhone 13 as well.
