24-hour video review: Apple’s new Powerbeats sporty earphones (2020 model)

Arriving without much fanfare earlier in the month, Apple’s new sporty earphones (marketed as “Powerbeats” rather than “Powerbeats4”) certainly have a lot going for them.

Say hello to your new gym buds

These Beats-branded sporty earphones are perfect for the gym and jogging, rocking a much better design than before — with ear hooks that are moldable and wrap around your ears — while costing $50 less than the previous model. Oh, and they work with the “Hey Siri” feature.

The new Powerbeats use a round rather than flat cable around your neck

Thanks to the included Apple H1 chip, these new earphones bring a significant battery life increase so they now last up to three hours longer than the previous Powerbeats3 model.

Replacing the previous Powerbeats3 model, the new Powerbeats offer fifteen hours of listening time versus 12 hours of listening time for their predecessor. And with a Fast Fuel function, you can get 60 minutes of listening time with a quick five-minute charge.

Powerbeats have always been great for jogging, and now they last three hours longer

Although the new model may appear to an untrained eye indistinguishable from the previous model (save for a few tiny design changes), the new earphones lack advanced features found on its pro counterpart, such as active noise cancellation, auto pause and Transparency mode.

Pricing and availability

The new Powerbeats in White, Black and Red, priced at $150, are available from Apple.com, Amazon.com and other retailers. By comparison, the more capable and pricier Powerbeats Pro model will set you back $250 a pop. If you’re interested in the more powerful Powerbeats Pro, you can buy them in White, Black, Blue or Green from Applevia Amazon.com and elsewhere.

Your thoughts

Speaking of which, which earphone brand do you happen to be rocking?

And while we’re at it, what are your thoughts on the new Powerbeats? Are they a better buy than the more expensive Powerbeats Pro model, which offers advanced features such as active-noise cancellation, as well as increased sweat and water resistance?
