Apple’s Pro Display XDR works with the iPad Pro and 2015 MacBook

The Apple-branded Pro Display XDR is an impressive standalone monitor, powerful in its own right and feature rich. So there has been some speculation about which devices, if connected to the accessory, would actually work.

For its part, Apple has a list of Apple devices that can work with the Pro Display XDR, and they include what you might expect, like the 2018 15-inch MacBook Pro, along with the 2019 16-inch MacBook Pro and others. But we also recently discovered that some devices that aren’t on the list, like the iMac Pro, can also power the external display.

So what about the iPad Pro? That’s whatΒ MacStories founder Federico Viticci wanted to find out when he posed the question on Twitter. YouTuber Jonathan Morris was quick to respond, saying he’d test it out with his own unit. And, sure enough, the iPad Pro does indeed work with the new Pro Display XDR.

Here’s the tweet showing it off in action:

But, that’s not all! Because Morrison also wanted to find out what would happen if he connected the 2015 12-inch MacBook to the Pro Display XDR as well. Would it work? After all, it’s an aging machine and certainly not in the same class as something like the iMac Pro, the 2019 MacBook Pro, or even the newest iPad Pro for that matter.

(Not to take anything away from the MacBook, which is a fine machine.)

Turns out the 12-inch MacBook from 2015 works with the powerful Pro Display XDR as well!

All of that is very exciting for owners of the brand new Pro Display XDR, especially if they have these devices and wanted to actually use the standalone monitor with them. Granted, especially with the 2015 MacBook, it probably might not be great for day-to-day usage.

Still, pretty cool to see.

Did you, or anyone you know, buy the new Pro Display XDR?
