Surprise: evasi0n unhides Weather app on iPad

While the new evasi0n jailbreak has been causing problems with the stock Weather app for some iPhone users, it's had quite the opposite effect for those with iPads.

As many of you have probably discovered by now, the utility actually adds the stock Weather app to the tablet's home screen...

Fix for evasi0n Weather app bug on the way

Earlier today, we started receiving reports that folks were having issues with their Weather app after jailbreaking. It's been the one glitch in an otherwise flawless execution of the evasi0n tool.

The issue appears to be limited to iPhones—the iPad actually gains Weather app functionality—and is only affecting some users. But nevertheless, the brilliant evad3rs say they're on it...

How some of our favorite jailbreak apps look like on the iPhone 5 [Video]

The just released evasi0n jailbreak is remarkable for a few reasons. For starters, it's the first untethered jailbreak released for iOS 6. Secondly, it's the first time that iPhone 5 owners have had the luxury of experiencing Cydia, and all of the jailbreak apps that come with it, on the larger screen.

We've seen a few folks tease us in the past with Cydia running on the iPhone 5, but never have you had the ability to experience it for yourself, firsthand. Inside this post, we'll showcase a few of our favorite jailbreak apps and tweaks, and show you how they look on the iPhone's 5 larger screen.

How to convert a tethered iOS 6.1 jailbreak into an untethered jailbreak

As we told you a bit earlier in the day, if you're using a tethered jailbreak for iOS 6.1 via the RedSn0w method, then you can easily convert that tethered jailbreak into an untethered jailbreak by means of a Cydia package.

Indeed, by downloading the evasi0n package from Cydia, you can transition over to an untethered jailbreak in just a few steps. While this isn't perhaps the most ideal way to achieve an untethered jailbreak, it is nice to have the option. This is especially useful for users who already have a ton of Cydia packages downloaded. By using this method, you don't have to reinstall all of your Cydia apps and tweaks. Given the state of Cydia right now, that's a very desirable proposition.

Take a look inside, as we show you how easy it is to convert your tethered jailbreak into an untethered jailbreak.

evasi0n sees over 100,000 downloads in first 10 minutes

About 20 minutes ago, the moment everyone has been waiting for finally arrived: the evad3rs released their untethered iOS 6 jailbreak called 'evasi0n.' Now, everyone with a device running iOS 6 or higher (except for the ATV) can jailbreak their devices.

And it seems like everyone wants to. Unless you got in within the first few minutes, you probably received the above error when trying to download the evasi0n utility. That's because there's over 270,000 people trying to access the site right now...

You can now add money to your account directly in Skype for iPad

Microsoft-owned Skype has some nice mobile clients on the iPhone and iPad (unlike its fugly Mac app). Though it's a tad heavy on CPU and battery, Skype on iOS offers excellent voice quality and image clarity in video chats. At least that's what my experience's been, your mileage may vary. Today, a new iPad build has surfaced on the App Store with some new nice capabilities worth a mention.

If you use Skype credits to text people and make inexpensive calls, no longer do you need to buy these on the Skype web site as the iPad build now supports adding money in-app, but only if you live in the United States, United Kingdom, France, Sweden or Estonia (more countries to follow soon).

Experiencing poor reception (it's Skype's way of letting us know we should buy some credits)? No problem, the new version now automatically reconnects a dropped call. More tidbits right after the break...

Next-gen iPad mini said to have a 324ppi Retina display

Taking a break from all of the jailbreak excitement this afternoon, we have a new report out of Taiwan claiming that sources close to Apple's panel suppliers have divulged new information about the next-generation iPad mini.

The 7.9-inch tablet has been extremely popular for Apple thus far, as supply is just now starting to catch up to demand three months after launch. And if this news is accurate, the next model is going to be an even bigger hit...

Tweetbot gains support for Chrome, Flickr, Vine and 1Password

Here's another nice Tweetbot update for your iPhone or iPad. A new version, Tweetbot 2.7, is now live on the App Store with some interesting new features. For starters, Tweetbot can now open links from tweets in Google's Chrome browser, provided it's installed on your iDevice. The app will also render Flickr images in-line, as well as 6-second clips tweeted out using Twitter's new Vine app. Lastly, links from tweets can also be sent to the 1Password app's built-in browser in order to access password-protected web sites without having to remember your credentials...

iPhone snares global web usage crown from Nokia

Apple yet again became the beneficiary of Nokia's seemingly never-ending swan song, becoming the most-used mobile brand on the Internet in January. This despite Apple actually losing nearly three percent of mobile online usage. That the Finnish-based Nokia collapsed by more than fifteen points, dropping it out of first place to the third spot, also helped.

According to the independent website analytics company StatCounter, Apple had a nice 25.86 percent of mobile Internet usage in January 2013. Although that was a decline of 2.81 percent compared to the same month in 2012, Nokia's share in the same period fell from 37.67 percent to 22.15 percent, a significant decline...

Apple wants to ‘re-imagine’ iLife and iWork apps

Apple is looking for some fresh blood to join its iLife and iWork development teams and "re-imagine how user interfaces should be built and work", a series of job ads posted on its web site indicates. In addition to engineers in the iLife Frameworks QA department, Apple is also seeking a QA engineer to help test new features in iPhoto, a Senior User Interface Designer for iWork and two Senior Software Engineer positions which explicitly mention improving the user interface of iLife apps...

Gartner: more than half of mobile apps will be HTML5/native hybrids by 2016

A convergence of mobile trends is setting the stage for a day when more than half of the applications will support both HTML5 and native iOS/Android environments. That's the word from research giant Gartner, who predicts companies must support multiple platforms as well as native features, such as mapping, cameras and location-based services. Additionally, the researcher forecasts brand-name smartphone makers could be pushed out of the low-cost market as countries such as China and India produce home-grown alternatives priced as low as $50...

You will be able to convert an iOS 6.1 tethered jailbreak into an untethered jailbreak

If you're currently rocking an iOS 6.1 tethered jailbreak on the iPhone 4 or the iPod touch 4th generation, then you have a decision to make. It's being recommended that you go ahead and reinstall stock iOS 6.1 back on to your device, but you can, however, opt to remain as you are, and instead install a debian package that will provide the iOS 6 untethered jailbreak.

Just as with the previous Rocky Racoon jailbreak for iOS 5.1.1, users who already have access to Cydia by means of a tethered jailbreak can "convert" their tethered jailbreak into an untethered just by installing the debian package via Cydia once released.
