iBooks Author: the Content is Yours, the Format is Apple’s

Apple updated the iBooks Author End User License Agreement (EULA) today to clarify who owns what when a book is published using the Mac application. TUAW gives a very clear explanation:

The change is an important one though, clarifying that Apple has rights over the format a book is in, not the content. If someone wants to charge a fee for an .ibooks formatted file, that document can only be sold or distributed through Apple, and that work will be subject to a separate agreement with Apple.

Basically, Apple owns the format, you own the content.

Apple Made 75% of All Mobile Phone Profits in the World Last Quarter

We've seen a lot of interesting data regarding Apple's latest quarterly earnings report over the last few weeks. What some are calling, "the quarter heard around the world," will go down in history as one of the most profitable three month periods of any company (not just technology-related) ever.

Popular Apple analyst Horace Dediu added to the pile of statistics this morning with a report about Apple's mobile profit earnings. Apparently, the Cupertino company raked 75% of all mobile phone profits (worldwide) last quarter...

‘Bookstand’ Combines Newsstand and iBooks Content

To some, having periodicals in one place and books in another place can seem redundant. If you're in this camp, then Bookstand may be something that makes sense.

Bookstand is a jailbreak tweak that places iBooks content into Newsstand, letting you access all of your reading content in one convenient place.

This jailbreak tweak lets you export your text messages to a PDF File

Believe it or not, there are actually several reasons why a person would want to export their iPhone's text messages to a shareable file. Maybe they need them as evidence in a criminal case, or want to save a memorable conversation.

But the iPhone doesn't give you an easy way to save your text messages. Luckily, as usual, we have a jailbreak tweak to help us out with this problem. Introducing the new Messages2PDF application...

Lucky Dude Buys a Brand New iPad 2 for $65 from a Goodwill Store

If this isn't pure luck, then I don't know what it is.

Reddit user djrjr is a frequent shopper at his local Goodwill store. A few days ago, as he was browsing the store, he came across a brand new 32GB iPad 2 wifi in the box, selling for $65.

Confused about such a low price, he asked the manager to make sure everything was correct. The manager confirmed that this brand new iPad was indeed selling for the bargain price of $65...

Apple 3G Devices Briefly Banned From German Online Store

I woke up this morning finding out that the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, and 3G iPads had been banned from sales on Apple's online store in Germany, due to an injunction won by Motorola Mobility, following the company's first big legal victory against Apple in the country a couple months ago.

By the time I took a shower and got to my computer though, the ban had already been lifted. That was quick...

Apple Looking to Make iOS a Part of Your Workout Routine

Just because Apple is in the consumer electronics business, doesn't mean it doesn't have its eye on other markets. Just last month we saw the company launch a digital textbook program, and it's also shown a lot of interest in the personal fitness space.

For the last several years, Apple has teamed up with Nike to bring fitness-tracking software to its iPhone and iPod products. Now it looks like it's trying to take that idea to the next level with its latest patent application regarding an iOS app that tracks and shares your workout information...

Apple Working on Fix for iTunes Match “Explicit Song Matching” Bug

Apple has been having a rough time with its iTunes Match service over the last few months. The product was more than a month late to market here in the US, and its international rollout didn't go much smoother.

Well it doesn't look like Apple's troubles are over quite yet. Cult of Mac is reporting that it has discovered a bug in the iTunes Match service that replaces songs with explicit lyrics with their cleaner counterparts...

Online Petition Against Apple’s Factory Conditions Receives 160,000 Signatures in a Week

Apple has received some slack of late over the perceived conditions of the Chinese workers who build its hugely popular products. With the eyes of the world currently firmly fixed on the likes of Foxconn, people are beginning to look more closely at the real cost of building our iPhones and iPads.

An online petition, set up to urge Apple to protect its Chinese workers has received 162,000 signatures in just over a week, with the number continuing to grow.

Allegations of unsafe working conditions and long hours have been rife of late, with Apple's main manufacturing partner, Foxconn, at the center of the issue...
