iPhone’s share in US nearing 1 in every 3 smartphones

Research firm comScore is out with a new survey of the United States smartphone market and the numbers paint dire picture for everyone but Apple and Samsung. More importantly, data shows that the iPhone's growth during the three month average period ending May 2012 outpaced Android, with Cupertino's market share approaching 1 in every 3 smartphone subscribers...

iCade Mobile game controller now available

Still looking for a decent handheld gaming accessory for your iPhone? You might try looking at the new iCade Mobile. ION unveiled the controller earlier this year at CES, and now it's finally available for purchase.

ION has seen a lot of success with its original iCade, and is hoping that it can translate that success into the mobile market. But will users take to the Mobile the way they've taken to ION's mini-arcade?

The 11 patents that are getting Android partners in trouble

The Android platform is under attack from a number of companies — not just Apple. Microsoft, for example, has forced several Android partners into licensing agreements due to patent infringements.

And between these settlements, and Apple's recent legal hot streak against Samsung, there's no denying that Google is guilty of illegally copying something from somewhere. But the question is, what?

Nokia has a plan B if Windows Phone bet fails. Android or BlackBerry?

Nokia thus far has seen little commercial success with first devices born out of their Windows Phone partnership with Microsoft, such as the hyped Lumia lineup. Apparently some Nokia executives are beginning to question the decision to hedge their bets on Microsoft's otherwise cool and smooth Windows Phone operating system and the forthcoming Windows 8.

But what if Windows 8 - the first major release to scale from smartphones to tablets to big screens - doesn't live up to high expectations? Where does that leave Nokia, the once leading cell phone vendor now on the increasingly similar downward spiral like Canada-based Research In Motion, another telecom on its way to the technology graveyard?

Safari Download Manager finally updated for iOS 5

iOS power-users rejoice, the popular jailbreak utility Safari Download Manager is finally compatible with iOS 5. The tweak, developed by Dustin Howett, gives you a large amount of control over your mobile downloads.

SDM has long-since been a favorite in the jailbreak community, but has recently been all-but-forgotten due to its lack of iOS 5 support. But now it's back, and better than ever. Here's our rundown of SDM part deux...

Thor automatically enables Wi-Fi when launching specific apps

Thor is a recently released jailbreak tweak that will enable your device's Wi-Fi connection whenever a certain app is launched. The settings panel for Thor includes around a dozen different apps like Tweetbot, Cydia, App Store, Safari, YouTube, etc.

If your Wi-Fi connection is disabled, and you have Tweetbot enabled in Thor's settings, the Wi-Fi connection will automatically enable whenever you launch Tweetbot, or any other app you have enabled in Thor's settings panel.

‘Torch’ is a new flashlight toggle for your iPhone’s Lock screen

Whenever you find yourself in a dark place, chances are you don't have a flashlight on your person, but you do have an iPhone. For that reason, it's a good idea to install a jailbreak tweak that allows you to easily use the iPhone's built in LED flash as a flashlight.

There are already a handful of decent flashlight tweaks available on Cydia, but this latest one called Torch is one of the better implementations. Torch is a tweak that places an easily accessible flashlight button on your Lock screen that will enable or disable the LED flash.

HiddenHelper allows you to use Siri while hiding the UI

HiddenHelper is a jailbreak tweak that's the public successor to the GhostSiri concept tweak that we posted about a while back. HiddenHelper, like GhostSiri, aims to accomplish the same deed — allow you to use Siri without actually bringing up the Siri UI.

Where HiddenHelper one-ups GhostSiri is in the options department. In HiddenHelper's settings panel, you'll notice provisions for enabling certain Siri snippets where a UI is necessary to receive proper response; Wolfram Alpha queries are a great example of this.

Google and Samsung have a game plan to both get money from Apple

As if the fact that Samsung - Apple's main supplier of processors, displays and flash memory chips - has been struggling to fend off Apple's legal blows wasn't enough, a new report out today has it that the maker of Galaxy smartphones and tablets is joining forces with Google as both firms seek to pressure Apple into a cross-licensing deal, with Cupertino paying both Samsung and Google to settle ongoing patenting woes.

If anything, Google openly supporting Samsung in the courtroom suggests nervousness on the part of both technology giants, especially as the latter has recently suffered a pair of legal setbacks concerning devices running Androids software, with potentially far-reaching consequences for the thriving Android ecosystem...

Mozilla’s mobile OS gains support from carriers, first phones in 2013

If Facebook building a phone was too much too handle, wait 'till you hear this. Mozilla, an open-source, non-profit organization behind the Firefox browser, announced this morning that its "Boot to Gecko" mobile initiative has gained support from several big telecoms, including Sprint, Deutsche Telekom, Smart, Telecom Italia and Telenor, to name a few. Mozilla also said that going forward, its mobile project is to be called Firefox OS. So, when are Firefox phones due and should Apple be worried?

iOS in the lead with nearly two-thirds of mobile web share in June

Research firm NetApplications yesterday issued a new mobile web usage share report which outlines mobile and tablet operating system share trends for the month of July 2012. iOS leads the pack in mobile web share and by a huge margin, too. The numbers also paint an alarming trend for RIM, which is now heading to a zero market share as the ailing BlackBerry maker struggles to turn its fortunes around...
