Happy 3rd Birthday, App Store

On this very day back in 2008, Steve Jobs announced the App Store. It was the day before the iPhone 3G launch, and nobody, perhaps not even Jobs himself, could foresee the amazing successes the App Store would have collected in the coming years.

I don’t want to bore you by saying how many apps were available and downloaded at any given moment, so I’ll just point out the most important ciphers. At the time of its launch, only 500 apps were available for download, but not even a year later, in April 2009, the number had increased to 35,000, with more than one billion downloads...

‘RemovedSound’ Brings the Familiar OS X Paper Crumbling Sound to the iPhone

I’ve always wondered why Apple never added the “paper crumbling” trash sound whenever you deleted an app in iOS.

Perhaps they figured that we’d be deleting things more than we do on our desktops, and that it would become annoying after a while.

Regardless of the reasoning, if you've been wanting something like this, then want no longer; RemovedSound -- one of the latest jailbreak TweakWeek tweaks -- has hit the Cydia store…

JailbreakMe Used 2,000,000 Times, Responsible for Jailbreaking 1% of All iDevices

JailbreakMe was released just a few days ago and has already had fulgurant success. Twelve hours after its launch, 500,000 iDevices had already been jailbroken. Fastforward a few days later, and JailbreakMe has now been used over 2,000,000 times.

The news that came this morning via Chpwn's Twitter account reveals with a quick calculation that JailbreakMe is responsible for jailbreaking 1% of all iPhones, iPads and iPods in the world...

StatusGoogle: Google Search Bar for Notification Center

We figure that most folks that haven't opted to try jailbreaking iOS 5 by now aren't going to. Perhaps you are waiting on an untethered jailbreak, or for more iOS 5 support from your favorite Cydia apps. But for those of you who have been waiting for more trivial reasons, check this out.

If the previously available custom widgets haven't caught your eye yet, let me show you StatusGoogle. The utility installs itself into your Notifications Center drop down menu, and allows you to initiate a Google search inside any app with a swipe of your finger...

‘SBVolume’ is Great For Those With Broken Volume Buttons

I admit it; I couldn't come up with any valid reasons for SBVolume’s existence during the shooting of my video walkthough, but as always, you commentors picked up on the transgression.

SBVolume is a TweakWeek tweak that places soft volume buttons on your iPhone’s Home screen. It’s definitely not the prettiest implementation in the world, but it would be a welcome addition to anyone’s Home screen that has broken physical volume buttons.

I overlooked that need during the shooting of the video, hence the over-the-top negativity. But still, I stand by my notion that it could look a whole lot better than it does now. Details inside…

iPhone Charging Cable Bursts Into Flames, iOS 5 to Blame?

Running a beta release of iOS on an iPhone, iPad or iPod touch comes with a very specific set of possible problems, ranging from poor battery life, to potential software conflicts, to things just plain not working.

One possible issue that we've not really considered before is the chance of an iPhone actually settings itself on fire. And that's apparently what's happened to one iOS developer's handset.

Or, his charging cord, at least....

Easily Access Your iPhone’s Vital Statistics With ‘TapClockInfo’

One of the nicest things about SBSettings is the ability to quickly view your iPhone’s important vital statistics such as available RAM and IP Addresses.

What if you could access that same information quickly from your iPhone’s lock screen? Wouldn’t that be neat?

With TapClockInfo -- a jailbreak tweak for the iPhone -- now you can. Check inside for a video demonstration of it in action…

Apple Forced to Pay Personal Audio $8 Million Over iPod Patent

Apple is no stranger to the courtroom these days; with patents, copyright claims, and counterclaims becoming as closely related to the Cupertino outfit as its iconic iPods.

Ironically, though, it seems that those very same iPods have landed Apple in trouble this time around, with the company being forced to stump up $8 million to a company that claims the iPod infringes on its patents...

Apple Store iPad Display Gets Jailbroken [Video]

Comex's new exploit is easily the best jailbreaking tool ever developed. Not only is it much faster than previous methods, it's as easy to use as downloading an app.

Another reason JailbreakMe comes out on top is that you don't need a computer to run the software. Everything is done from the device. This creates an interesting dynamic for jailbreaking, because now you can do it almost anywhere. Even in an Apple Store...
