Go Native! A Jailbreak Tweak that Adds Multitasking to Your Outdated Apps

By Jeff Benjamin on Jan 2, 2011

By now, there’s absolutely no excuse for an app not to support Fast App Switching, the iPhone’s form of multitasking. It’s been about six months since iOS 4 appeared on the scene, an update in which we finally received native multitasking on our iPhones.

Understandably, not all of our apps flew out of the gate with multitasking support built in; slowly but surely, they were updated to add support for such a critical feature. Sadly, there remain apps that have been neglected; apps that have yet to taste the sweet nectar of multitasking.

This is where jailbreaking comes in handy. Jailbreak apps like Backgrounder have provided an incredible workaround for these neglected apps. Go Native! adds yet another option to the playing field, but can it compete with Backgrounder?

Next iPhone to Sport Dual Core CPU?

By Jeff Benjamin on Dec 25, 2010

The iPad rumors have been heating up as of late, with one analyst making speculations about what’ll be under the hood of the popular tablet’s next iteration. These rumors suggest that the iPad 2, or whatever Apple decides to call the iPad’s yet to be named successor, will feature a dual core chip.

While that’s not a surprising suggestion, seeing as both Motorola and RIM have dual core tablets on the horizon, what did catch our eye is the revelation that the next iPhone might follow suit…

SBSwitcher Places SBSettings Toggles in Your App Switcher

By Jeff Benjamin on Dec 16, 2010

The first thing I thought when I first saw SBSwitcher on Cydia is “Wow, that’s pretty expensive.” Indeed $2.99 is quite the hefty price for a jailbreak tweak that essentially duplicates the functionality that you’ve been enjoying all of this time for free.

SBSwitcher is basically SBSettings placed in your app switcher. Unfortunately, only the toggles apply here, so if you want to invoke any of the other SBSettings functionality, like say, respringing, you’ll have to resort back to your old methods…

With that in mind, there has to be some redeeming factor for SBSwitcher, right? Surely, $2.99 will travel further than that, no? Read More

Will the iPhone 4GS Be the Fastest, Most Powerful iPhone Yet?

By Jeff Benjamin on Nov 23, 2010

The iPhone 3GS was a much needed stop-gap between the iPhone 3G and the iPhone 4. It was so much faster than the iPhone 3G, that pretty much anything the iPhone 4 can handle, the iPhone 3GS can still handle adequately to this day.

In all actuality, the iPhone 3G should have been what the iPhone 3GS was from the get-go; that would have resulted in a lot more satisfied customers over the long term.

As you may have noticed, when more and more iOS updates were released, the iPhone 3G became slower and slower, leading to numerous consumer complaints. This is a testament to the fact that the iPhone 3G should have been released in the form of its beefed up big brother from the very beginning…

Cleaning Up Your iPhone App Management with MultiCleaner

By Alex Heath on Nov 13, 2010

Do you hate how your iPhone leaves app icons in the multitasking bar even though they aren’t running anymore? How about when you have to go through that tedious process to exit an app; click the home button twice, tap and hold an icon in the multitasking bar, wait for it to jiggle, and then click that tiny red delete button to quit.

Luckily, there are other people that feel the same way. MultiCleaner is a jailbreak app that relieves the cumbersomeness of managing your multitasking apps. In fact, the app’s tagline is quite simple, “Because iOS 4 multitasking sucks…”

AppSwitch, the Ultimate System Utility for Your iPhone

By Alex Heath on Nov 8, 2010

Apple doesn’t like for users to be able to see what’s “under the hood.” OS X and iOS are very design and aesthetically driven. Apparently, Apple feels that “viewing processes” is an archaic feature. There is no real way in iOS to get a bird’s eye view of everything that’s running on your phone.

There are, however, some of us out there who would like to know things like which processes are running and the current distribution of system memory. Luckily, App Switch, by XCool Apps, is here to remedy our need for total control…

Need More Proof that iOS 4.2 is Right Around The Corner?

By Jeff Benjamin on Nov 3, 2010

I can’t say I’m a big fan of Sudoku, but Big Bad Sudoku Book has piqued my interest due to it being one of the first iPhone Apps in the App Store that touts full support for iOS 4.2. If that’s not proof that iOS 4.2 is mere hours or days away, then I don’t know what is.

Although iPhone users running iOS 4.1 already have access to Game Center, remember that our iPad toting friends currently do not, along with many other features like multitasking, and folders. If Big Bad Sudoku Book’s latest App Store approval is any indicator, I’d say that the wait is just about over.

iPad to Get iOS 4.2 in November

By Sebastien Page on Sep 1, 2010

I hope you’re not holding your breath on multitasking and folders for iPad because according to Steve Jobs, it won’t be available until November of this year.

When Apple introduced iOS 4, they made it clear that it wouldn’t be available for iPad until “this fall”, so technically we’re on schedule. Still, I would have expected something sooner than that.

During a live event today, Steve Jobs made a demo of iOS 4.2 for iPad. It looks good but nothing groundbreaking.

Among the new features expected in iOS 4.2, we have:

  • Multitasking
  • Folders
  • Printing – on a wireless network
  • AirPlay – streams content to the new Apple TV
  • Game Center
  • Better email – unified inbox, threaded emails
  • And more…

Underwhelming?

New Jailbreak Application Removes Selected Apps from the App Switcher

By Sebastien Page on Sep 1, 2010

Are you confused by the title of this post? Yeah, me too, but I couldn’t figure out how to clearly say what I wanted it to say. Anyways, now that I’ve got your attention, I want to talk to you about a new jailbreak app called Remove Background.

You might remember the Remove Background SBSettings Toggle we showed you a couple weeks ago. The Remove Background app works hand in hand with it. Read More

Multifl0w Brings Awesome Multitasking to the iPhone

By Sebastien Page on Aug 22, 2010

We’ve talked about Multifl0w before, one the first jailbreak apps to give a multitasking UI to the iPhone. At the time, I wasn’t really a fan because I thought that ProSwitcher was a much better application. Things have changed a lot since then. Apple developed their own multitasking feature, and ProSwitcher was left for dead by its developer who recently said he will not update it. Read More

Remove Background Toggle for SBSettings

By Sebastien Page on Aug 16, 2010

Remove Background is a new mod available in Cydia that adds a toggle to SBSettings allowing you to remove all apps from the task switcher, and kill apps processes at the same time. It’s pretty handy because your app switcher can get messy really quickly if you recently opened several applications

I’ve been looking for a similar app for a while and although Remove Background works as advertised, I find it to be too “extreme” for me. I rarely (if ever) want to kill all apps at once. Instead, I’d like to be able to select in the settings what apps I never want to run in the background or appear in the task switcher. If you’re a developer, feel free to use my idea…

What about you? Have you used Remove Background? What do you think about it?

Proswitcher for iPad Alpha Release Available

By Sebastien Page on Jun 14, 2010

Proswitcher for iPad is now available in alpha release. Ryan Petrich, most likely my favorite jailbreak developer, just informed me that he made Proswitcher for iPad available to the general public instead of pushing the alpha to just a few users.

For those of you who don’t know Proswitcher, it is a great jailbreak app that gives a nice and simple UI to Backgrounder, the app that first brought multitasking to the iPhone.

You can get Proswitcher HD (or whatever it will be called) on your iPad by adding the following source to Cydia: http://rpetri.ch/repo.

Be warned! This is an alpha release which means it can be very buggy. As soon as I installed the app, my screen froze, I hard rebooted several times until the issue finally disappeared. Other than that, I haven’t had any issue.

I’m very excited to get Proswitcher on my iPad. That is one jailbreak app I was really missing.

Give it a try and tell us what you think.

Thanks to @MikeErickson for the tip.

App Switcher Circuitous Updated for iPad

By Sebastien Page on Jun 5, 2010

The excellent Circuitous has been updated for the iPad. For those of you who don’t know Circuitous, it is a custom app switcher that shows your open applications in a dock on top of your springboard from where you can easily and quickly launch and exit apps.

To get Circuitous to work at its best, you will need to install Backgrounder and Activator.

Circuitous previously made it in our list of best jailbreak apps for iPhone. Something tells me it’s now going to make it in our list of best jailbreak apps for iPad.

ProSwitcher HD for iPad to be Released Soon

By Sebastien Page on May 30, 2010

ProSwitcher, one of the best jailbreak apps that brought multitasking to the iPhone is about to be updated for the iPad. Ryan Petrich, the developer of ProSwitcher sent a tweet a few hours ago announcing the future release of the application.

For those of you who aren’t familiar with ProSwitcher yet, it is a multitasking app for the iPhone that kinda replicates the Palm Pre “cards” feature by adding a very nice UI to Backrounder, the jailbreak app that allows you to run apps in the background.

I’m a big fan of Ryan Petrich’s work in general, and specially of ProSwitcher which I consider a must-have application. I’m definitely looking forward the iPad release. So far, there is no estimated time of arrival but I doubt it will take too long.

Multitasking 101: Activator

By Guest Author on Apr 6, 2010

When it comes to multitasking, the Apple line of iDevices falls short. Very short. Apple’s claims are more or less valid; multitasking drains the battery. While this may be true in some cases, it doesn’t completely hold up to that claim. There are millions of people who jailbreak their devices just so they can multitask.

As of this writing, all generations of the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch cannot multitask applications that are not part of the stock firmware. This means that you cannot download applications from iTunes App Store and minimize it (run it in the background). Have you ever become frustrated that you can’t listen to Pandora radio and surf the web with Mobile Safari? Yeah? So have many of us.

Rumors are piling up that Apple will finally allow these 3rd party applications to run in the background. On white paper, this means you can run applications such as Pandora and play games simultaneously at the expense of a generous battery tax. At least the choice would exist. We own the devices after all.

The intriguing part of the iPhone is the fact that there is only one main button. Equally as important is the power button and the volume controls. This opens up new questions as to how to activate backgrounded applications. It’s clear that Apple invents but it’s also clear that Apple sometimes “borrows” code from the open source projects.

Enter Activator. A free and open source library and Mobile Subtract extension, developed by Ryan Petrich (better known as @rpetrich on Twitter), available to any developer to include with their development projects. That’s great for developers. What about the average user?

To the average user, the only catch is Activator is a forbidden fruit and only available for jailbroken devices and only available in the Cydia Store. Anyone using Overboard and/or Snappy is already familiar with the library since Activator is a required library for both applications and is automatically downloaded and installed when either application is installed. It can also be installed as a stand alone application so there is no obligation to install anything else. Just do a search for “Activator” in Cydia and install. Then go to Settings.app and scroll down to your jailbreak settings table and configure your gestures.

Activator installs a handful of gestures, or activation methods, that can be assigned to any application, even applications from the App Store. How cool is that? This allows users to quickly access, or activate, background processes by simply swiping a finger or quickly tapping the home button. Of course, this genius developer also included support for using the volume buttons and the power button.

Assuming all said rumors of multitasking are true, what are your thoughts on handling backgrounded applications? Will Apple develop their own gesture code or “borrow” and close the doors? Activator is there… in all its glory. Free and open. One thing is certain; the current gesture API will need to be updated because one home button cannot do all the work.

Apple to Unveil iPhone OS 4.0 On Thursday

By Sebastien Page on Apr 5, 2010

Engadget got words that Apple announced an iPhone 4.0 event that will be held on Thursday where the company will give a “sneak peak into the future of iPhone OS”.

A few months ago, I wrote about 28 features I would like to see in OS 4.0 and I’m pretty sure the big news of the event will be around:

These are just a few of my predictions. We’ll see how much I’m right/wrong. I’ll be staying up late here in Vietnam so I can give you a run down of the new OS as soon as it is unveiled.

In the meantime, tell us what you would like to see in iPhone OS 4.0.
