Split View multitasking

True multitasking is now a reality on the iPad! With iOS 9, you can view two apps at the same time and interact with them using multitouch at the same time.

You can also adjust the Split View between the two apps on the fly, and access additional apps by means of a brand new App Switcher. You’ll even be able to watch videos via a brand new Picture in Picture mode.

Needless to say, iOS 9 looks like a complete game changer for the iPad. It will certainly make it more of a productivity machine thanks to the new multitasking ability.

Picture in Picture

The new multitasking interface works using four main components:

App Switcher – The App Switcher has been completely redesigned in iOS 9.

iOS 9 new app switcher

Slide Over – Lets you open a second app from the side of the screen without leaving the app that you’re currently using. Slide over is available for the following iPad models:

  • iPad Air
  • iPad Air 2
  • iPad mini 2
  • iPad Mini 3

Split View is available only on the iPad Air 2, and allows two apps to be open and active on screen at the same time. You can then use multitouch gestures with both apps simultaneously.

Slide Over

Picture in Picture – Will scale down a video so that you can enjoy the video while doing things like web browsing and checking email.

Multitasking on the iPad is a complete game-changer, and one of the biggest changes to the iPad since the original device launched in 2010. Seriously, it looks incredible, and I’m going out to buy a new iPad Air 2 asap.

  • Chris Tangler

i cant wait for it to be implemented in the iphones

    • Yash Gorana

Sadly, it won’t be. But then there is jailbreak.

    • Mr.Coolfreak

I don’t think it will. This was done to differentiate the iPad from the I phone

    • Poporopo00

I don’t think is that helpful in an iphone, for a Plus maybe.

    • Rodney Coleman

I can see this on the 6 plus

    • DevXav

I think it’s gonna be implemented on iPhone 6S Plus and maybe iPhone 6S 🙂

Pretty sure about that, but let’s wait..

    • Rodney Coleman

iPhone 6 Plus has the flash card swipe on multitasking.. Anyone confirm on iPhone 6?

  • Shine

The video thing is pure theft from jailbreak scene.

    • That_Fruitarian

      Glad it’s native now.

    • 5ingularity

      Yep VideoPane

    • Markus Hudobnik

I honestly don’t understand when people say this. Yes it was a tweak on jailbreak, but the idea has been around forever.

      • Garry Andrew Grainger

How do you even use the video thing from ios 9 beta? I tried and couldn’t (there’s no button for it)…

    • Poporopo00

Who cares…that is why jailbreak exists, to have what they don’t. Now they do…great!

  • Valinor

Split view not on the ipad air. Proofs we got ripped off on hardware.
Was expecting that it wouldnt work on the ipad air though…. It has low memory issues ever since its release.
    Sucks though 🙁

    • Jon20

That was honestly disappointing to hear. It’s kind of a slap in the face for everyone who bought that first iPad air to come and find out that they can’t even do split screen multitasking when I was able to do things like multify with a jailbreak on my iPad air. And even worse that you can’t do it on an iPhone 6 Plus either. This just goes to show how controlling they can be with their software. It’s not necessary to have to buy an iPad air 2 in order to do multitasking and I hope someone in the jailbreak community creates a tweak like that.

      • Poporopo00

        I hope so too.

      • That’s exactly what they did with pretty much every “revolutionary” feature, from the “multitasking” tray, to Siri, to AirDrop, and now split-screen multitasking. It’s all planned obsolescent, but sadly, people still accept it and just get their next product…

      • Kurt

“planned obsolescent”…have you seen that documentary about the light bulbs?

      • Nope, but now that you mentioned it, looked it up and read some interesting articles about it. Now going to watch it on YouTube.

      • Kurt

Enjoy. It’s a real eye opener. At least it was for me.

    • Poporopo00

Don’t worry about it, next year that will be the “Big” update:
“Split view for ipad air and Iphones too”…and everybody will say “yeeeeeah” and clap in that room…LOL..so sad.

    • really

Lol. This has been on many android tablets for years. With apple, it works with just 1 device. Hilarious.

  • Lamoni Woulard

iPhone is getting the new mutlitasking support as well.

    • Not the slide in and split screen, nor the pip. Just the new app switcher.

      • Correct, but next phone will have it all for sure.

      • i wouldn’t doubt that.

    • Carlos Medina

      Did they announce it?

  • Lamoni Woulard

    It Is.

    • Hot12345

      no is not

  • Al

Having the iPad w/ Multitasking. I wonder does Jeff regret buying the Nexus 9 now..

    • Hot12345

haha i think he has regrets

  • I don’t see why iPhones can’t have the pip. Videopane is one of my fav tweaks and works without a hitch. In fact, I’m watching the keynote in a pane while typing this right now.

    • Jon20

      “That’s INNOVATIVION right there!!!” LOL.

    • Alejandro Delgado

What is this? a video for ants? Seriously? in an era of HD video and true to life colors and you wanna watch a video on that TINY square? Full screen is small enough in an iphone

      • really

Lol. You do realize until like 8 months ago, no iphone was over 4 inches and none were even hd (720p) let alone 1080p. Your comment is just plain idiotic. All iphone users were watching non hd videos on a little tiny itty bitty screen. Guess you are all ants.

      • Alejandro Delgado

I said the video was HD, never said anything about the screen being 720 or 1080 or whatever. I could accept video that small on a 6 plus but on a 5s or 6? It’s plain ridiculous. The screen is already too small to watch anything comfortably.

      • Lol you don’t even know what hd means. Educate yourself.

      • Alejandro Delgado

Yeah, you keep telling yourself that. Whatever floats your boat, mate. Greetings.

      • Telling myself what? Seriously. You have the definition of HD wrong. Look it up.

      • You’re acting as if I’m watching a Speilberg film bruh. It’s a basic keynote presentation that I’m mainly just listening to while glancing every now and then. The video can be scaled to full screen but I kept it small.

      • You probably watch videos and look at photos on your apple watch.

    • Blip dude

I have doubts now, because as someone just mentioned to me earlier, Apple will probably attempt to began differentiate the iPad from the iPhone, and I believe this is the first attempt. Hence why even the iPhone 6 Plus isn’t even getting the new iPad keyboard as well. So expect more iPad only features if this is the case. I won’t completely doubt it though, as A) they may change their mind, and B) there is always a Jailbreak.

      • I agree and have said the same. Even though I hate it, it’s good they are making clear differences between the two genres. It’s the reason I don’t have an iPad now, I feel it’s redunant and pointless. That may be changing however.

  • GuyBey0ndC00L

Apple just made iPad somewhat useable again with multi screens.
No multi screen for iPhone 6 specially 6 Plus is extremely disappointing.

  • VWH

It’s too bad that Slide Over is not at least available on the iPhone 6 Plus in landscape mode. This would allow quick compose for messages, meaning this eliminates the last reason I would have for jailbreaking.

  • TwinSon

    Now about that Quick-Compose..

  • Montgomery Tyler

apple feel so proud to announce the multi tasking….. but thats been happening in the jailbreak world lol. A little to late.

    • Chang in Charge

its been awful in the jailbreak world! i can’t think of one good multitasking split screen app.

      • Smegmatron

awful is the best word i can relate. A while ago a brazilian kid came with a good idea but i costs 10 bucks with no support whatsoever from the developer. It was a good concept but buggy as hell. I cant remember the name of the tweak though

      • iknotum

      • NotTheLysander

LOL I’m one of those people who actually paid the 10$ for Quasar, which crashed my ipad 2 after about 10 minutes of use. Nice enough concept, but 10$ for a concept that just worked on iOS 5.0.1, is a little crazy now that I think about it.

      • Montgomery Tyler

maybe it is but the fact that it took them this long to add that feature into ios. Then you have to ask yourself how long would it have took them to add that feature?

      • iknotum

OS Experience it’s a good alternative if you need it. New version compatible with iOS8 is coming.

      • Chang in Charge

Nah os experience is a horrible experience.

  • socrates

As an iPad user, I’m delighted that I’ll get these features natively.
As a jailbreaker, I’m interested to see how dev’s are going to tweak these features.
Lastly, as a consumer, I see Apple giving iPhone-only users a reason to add an iPad to their iDevice ecosystem.

    Extremely well played, Apple.

  • n0ahcruz3

very nice now bring in the ipad pro…

  • Ds

This isn’t going to make me want to use my ipad mini again when I have a iphone 6+ its extremely sad that Apple wont add this feature to the 6+ considering it runs exactly like a ipad. if more devs were updating their app to support the iphone 6+ landscape feature I could see this being fairly useful.

  • amir80

This feature has been included in Samsung tablets and Galaxy phone 2 or 3 years ago. The implementation is also very similar…

    • SkyFall

Window multitasking has been available on iOS since iOS 5 in the form of a jailbreak tweak called Quasar. PiP isn’t something new really. Look at the video players on OS X and Windows it was a matter of time until iOS and Android made it a default feature.

      • amir80

But I don’t understand how apple exec can call it a revulsion when they just copy this old feature from Samsung or from a jailbreak

      • Alejandro Delgado

Samsung? i can see this is almost exactly as minimizing a video on the YouTube app…

      • really

On Samsung devices you can minimize any video you play just like YouTube and use your phone like normal. Been like that for a few years. this is a blatant copy from samsung and google, but I know all yall apple fanboys will say “it’s worth the 3-4 year wait, apple does it right hehehe”

      • Alejandro Delgado

We’re all Apple fanboys now? Okay. I’m not supporting the feature amd honestly it seems useless to me. I have seen this kind of implementation on Youtube, never user a samsung device ith such a thing so i cant judge

      • really

        shut up

  • singhay559

Apple and their selfishness. Why not make it available for all ipads. It because they want people to upgrade their devices.

    • Gary le

Split view requires ipad air 2 since it is the ONLY ios device that has 2gb of ram to handle it.

      • singhay559

If this is true then how is it that developers was able to create a tweak that allowed my ipad 2nd generation to have multitasking also. And it has only 1gb of ram

      • really

Exactly. You already stated the truth, apple wants you to give them more money buying the latest and greatest device. That’s how apple makes their money, they are very good brainwashers.

  • Now we wait for a jailbreak for it to be accessible for people that have older ipads

  • really

Good job apple! Only 2 years after Samsung put this on their phones and tablets!

  • Kurt

PIP, Split screen multitasking. Copying Samsung. Excellent move. Late but glad to see it finally arrive though I won’t be able to use it on my iPad Air.

    • Gary le

Yeah Apple is always seems to be late in features but luckily I have an air 2 with 2gb of ram to handle split view.

      • Kurt

Wanna trade? My iPad Air for your iPad Air 2? 😉

  • Shingo

it seems ipad4 wont be supported

  • Haha, planned obsolescents at it’s finest. Just like they excluded the app-switcher from the 3G, Siri from the 3Gs/4, and AirDrop from the 3Gs/4/4s, they’re now excluding yet another feature to the latest devices despite old devices easily handling them…oh well.

  • Ishaan Malhotra

It should have been a part of iphone 6 plus. Sucks!!

  • DevXav

Probably iPhone 6S Plus and 6S will do so.. Le’ts cross fingers and wait.

  • Darthque

loaded it to my test ipad (3d generation). its slow as hell 🙁

  • NotTheLysander

I dont quite understand why my iPhone 6+ isnt treated by more developers, and Apple themselves, more as an iPad. (other than money reasons obviously) I’m looking at you Billzard re: Hearthstone.

  • John Kerby

Too bad you can’t do this on iPad mini three, i’m hoping that it changes though

  • Agostinho Paulo

I have an iPad 4. do I get any of these new features?
