Swype keyboard themes

I have a love/hate relationship with third-party keyboards. On the one hand, they theoretically provide a better way to input text on your iOS device. On the other, I’ve found them to actually make me waste more time than I would using the stock keyboard. But I’m not giving up yet on keyboards, especially on Swype, which has been my favorite one so far.

Normally priced at $0.99, Swype is currently available for free as Apple’s App of the Week in the App Store for a limited time. If you aren’t familiar with Swype, check out Lory’s first look at the third-party keyboard. Since she published it, the app has also been updated with support for more languages and improved iPad layout, making it an even more solid option.

It’s still not perfect to me yet (ie. switching back to the default iOS keyboard is a pain), but this is the best I’ve used so far. Obviously, your mileage may vary, but at the price of free, it’s definitely an alternative you should consider if you haven’t yet.

I think its Apple free App of the Week.. Lets wait for few minutes and we’ll see.

    • Jason Baroni

I thought the same, but would Apple giveaway an unstable app?

      • Anmol Malhotra

Hehe.. All 3rd party keyboards are unstable 😀
It was updated recently with 21 new languages , so its possible for making it free to increase user base.

      • Jason Baroni

Brazilian blogs are confirming Swype is the app of th week. Pretty surprising from Apple to give us something like that, but I appreciate anyway.

    • Yermum

I don’t see it in the Apple store app, nor the featured section of the app store, so maybe not…

    • Coax

It is app of the week.

    • Noah

You’re right. Currently it’s this week’s App of the Week in Australia.

  • riazbapoo

a word to the wise , don’t install swype if you have to use special characters as your lock screen passcode, you’ll be locked out of your device.

    • Yermum

Untrue. It defaults to the standard keyboard for device related password entries. Even in the app store.

  • Jason Baroni

It works better than Swiftkey, the themes are a plus. Glad to download it for free.

And let the flame wars begin…

  • David Gitman

I am still using apple default keyboard

    • Jason Baroni

After testing all of them I do say it’s the best out there, too. It’s not about the performance, but design.

      • Yermum

This is true. Unfortunately it has crappy spellchecking and in turn makes typing a fair bit slower than the standard keyboard.

      • Jason Baroni

Yes. I think by now any other keyboard is still beta, but I love how Apple’s keyboard feels… right. People ever complained about the lack of other keyboards and stuff, but even loving swipe and more commands, I like to notice how the iOS keyboard is still better design wise. The simpler, the better. At least for some of us.

      • ericesque

I agree with the exception of the incredibly ambiguous shift key.

Imo third party keyboards haven’t been impemented correctly in iOS yet. There’s no to set it as the default keyboard, so it’s a pain switching back and forth. Here’s hoping eventually Apple opens up a bit more and lets us select the default.

    • Trevor Salmon

If you put the keyboard that you want to use by default on the list of keyboards in the settings, then it will go to that keyboard by default when you go to type something.

      • Dan

        my mistake, I stand corrected

    • Nuno123

Of course is possible to select which keyboard you want to use first, in the settings you can do that… For me the only downside is switching between languages in the Swype cause I write a lot in Portuguese and English and isn’t practical on doing that…

  • Blip dude

Let’s see what all the hype is about.

  • TwinSon

Copped. Swift key was my fav on Android but it’s horrid on iOS, 4/10 times the keyboard won’t even come out and you have to restart the application youre using it in to fix it.

  • s0me

Disabled Auto-Correction on Ipad but it doesnt work. It is still autocoreecting some words and it is annoying. Anyone else got this problem?

  • Oscar Alaniz

I also have a hate-love relationship with keyboards. SwiftKey was pretty good, but the design was pretty awful. I tried Swype but for some reason it didn’t convince me. I liked Flesky design a lot, but it is a pain entering new words or special characters.

  • iBanks

Such a great tip of it being free that I sent into iDB. But hey…

  • Gabriel Anaya

Swift key is better. It’s just more accurate for me.I’ve had far less problems than with swype.Swype gave me headaches

Is there any developer who develop a QR / Bar Code Keyboard extension for iOS?

I think this idea is very usefull!!

    thanks!
    Paul.

  • Annie Leonhardt

Coming from Android… none of these swype keyboards come close to the quality of keyboards for Android. Google Keyboard is legendary… Swype on iPhone is pretty inefficient.

Swype keyboard has the best swype…
SwiftKey has the best word detection
TouchPal has the best field detection… EX: I can swype an email without it putting a space in between characters…

Someone make a new keyboard with all of these together… I’d though it’d be common sense to include these features, guess not.

Bring in new keyboard or Google Keyboard 😀

Off topic. Is there a way to downgrade from IOS8.1 back to IOS7.1.2? I experienced super slow WIFI connection and I want to revert back to IOS7. I know Apple has stopped the downgrade of 7.1.2 but come on….there must be a way to work around this right????
