Those of you who have used the untethered jailbreak for iOS 5.0.1 might have encountered an issue where iBooks crashes every time you try to launch the application.

This problem isn’t new. Apple introduced this awhile back as a way to fight jailbreaking. Fortunately, we already have a fix for it. It’s quick, simple, and it should solve all your issues with iBooks…

How to fix iBooks crashing on iOS 5.0.1 untethered jailbreak

Fix iBooks crashing the easy way:

A few commenters tell us that you can simply add the repo and install iBooksFix2 from there. Try this and tell us what works best for you.

Fix iBooks crash manually:

Note that iH8Sn0w tells me this might break iTunes syncing.

Step 1: Download this file.

Step 2: SSH into your iPhone and drop the file in /var/root/Media/Cydia/AutoInstall. If this folder doesn’t exist, just create it.

Step 3: Reboot your iPhone.

Thanks for the feedback, everyone.

  • or use iFunBox and drop it under Cydia Installer

  • or you can download the iBooksFix2 package from cydia.. it’s easier and the icon stays rounded

    • What repo is it on?

    • Already searched it can’t find it 🙁

I didn’t saw it either… but found it touching the repo in “Sources” and going all the way down to iBooksFix2!

Yes, I agree; iBooksFix2 uses the original App Store iBooks icon and it is smaller, cleaner, nicer and easier.

  • Will this work with sn0wbreeze + Corona?

    • Anonymous

Uuuuh………………..yeah dude. the whole point of it is to fix iBooks after the untether, whether it be Corona, or redsn0w…………….the untether is exactly the same file.

It works on 5.0.1 untethered…………….regardless of what you used to untether.

Doen’t matter that you used Sn0wbreeze.

iBooks is already fixed with sn0wbreeze/redsn0w tethered jailbreak, but with the untethered…………….A fix needs to be applied to use iBooks/

      iBooks is

    “might probably encountered”

You might want to reword that or at least throw in a “have” lol

    • Fixed. Thanks

Nps man, easier to spot errors when you aren’t writing the post lol

  • Thanks for the feedback everyone. I updated the post with the iBooksFix2 info 🙂

Had to fix my iBooks yesterday before this article came out. The ibooksfix2 didnt work for me. After following the instructions my iBooks stayed round but would crash on launch. I tried the fix2 method about4 times and at one point manually deleted from /applications and that made my other apps crash on start including app store and maps ಠ_ಠ.

Finally gave up and did the longer manual method from a previous idb article and that fixed it for me. Had to basically leave a copy of iBooks in both var/mobile/applications and /applications

I’m still stuck with square icon but that can be fixed so easily.

    • i have the same error….wat did u do exactly??

  • Anonymous

ibooksfix2 doesn’t work for me either.

  • Anonymous

    It works after Reboot. Thanks

I’m waiting on Redsnow beta 8 before I jailbreak lol, too many bugs experienced so far with the initial untether, maybe in a couple of weeks I will enjoy the freedom again but without the springboard crashes, memory drain and random reboots lol

  • Cydia fix doesn’t work.

    • Anonymous

It may not work for you, but for the vast majority of jailbreakers, iBooksFix2 works flawlessly. There must be something wrong with your iDevice or you are doing something wrong.

I’m still on iOS 5.0 tethered but iBooksFix2 worked great for me.

can any1 tell me how could i remove it ? because ifixbooks 2 chamged its location.what a bug !! i hate it >.<

    • Yeah! Fuck’d up my freshly done jailbreak, now it was a mess. Tried removing from Cydia and now iBooks is a white icon!! Any idea how to remove iBooks?

    • Steven Smith

You need iFile from Cydia or at least get OpenSSH, then delete from /Applications if you have already try the ibookfix2 as it has already moved the folder there. Then reboot your iPhone.

Also check that it is not in /var/mobile/Applications/ just in case.

        thnx for the help. 🙂
it worked for me . 🙂

For me the jailbreak deleted all my PDF files in iBooks

    • Anonymous

That is normal. iBooks is not supposed to work on jailbroken iDevices.

  • Shobhit Kohli

Tried everything…. nothing works… please guide in detail… Thanks

  • i installed older version of ibooks from cydia and works prefectly.

Which repo has old versions of IBooks?

      • Anonymous

search ibooks in installous and u’ll see previous versions.install any one of them.

  • The site has hacked app/tweaks ..use at your own risk..but also it sometimes has fixes like this… It’s up to you what you download…just remember that these tweaks where made by a Dev and it could of took weeks to create the tweak..and you are ripping them off…but like I said its up to you..
It is a nice way to try before you buy though…

Insanelyi’s repo is swarmed with cracked Cydia apps and tweaks, and I’m pretty sure that’s the point of it. But that’s not my problem, the problem is that 2 out of 3 apps I installed from their repo crashed my iPhones, so I wouldn’t recommend it even being in your iPhones, people.

(Same thing applies to SiNFUL iPhone Repo and HackYouriPhone Repo)

after using ibooksfix 2 my iphone springboard crash and didnt come out from safe mode please help

  • It is Fix which this renews BundleIdentifier of iBooks1.3 of the old version and only moves to /Application.
I hope for Fix of iBooks1.5 of the current version immediately.
(even if 1.5 renews BundleIdentifier, may be do not just work)

  • didnt work for me

  • This did fix for me on the 1st gen iPad w/ 5.0.1 !! THANKS FOR THE INFO DUDE!

  • somehow it still crashes….

  • Steven Smith

Only way I my iPhone 4 to work is to manually fix as stated above. iBooks Fix2 did not work for me. However I have two iBooks icon, one does not work and one does.

    • one of them, the one that cannot be deleted when in wiggle mode, should be the one from the manual fix. The one that can be deleted is the one installed from appstore, and that should be the one that doesnt work. You can safely delete that and the one from manual fix will still be there.

  • both ways didnt work here 🙁

  • the SSH option works for me, and i try syncing with itunes and that works fine without any problem. Maybe im just lucky, or maybe iH8snow meant that as a caution. The downside is the ibooks used in this tweak is of version 1.3 so some features that are present in the newer ibooks will not be there (plus no fullscreen function, as you can still see “pages” on the right side of the screen which for me needs a little bit of getting used to). the iBooksfix2 doesnt work for me.

  • i hope u can come out with more solutions….:S

  • Ibooksfix2 didn’t work for me on my upgraded 3GS, will try manually shortly

Since the recently untethered jailbreak for IOS 5.0.1 was released, I’ve been surfing the internet all over looking for a way to fix the iBooks crash which in my case had never happened before (I have an iPhone 4, upgraded from IOS 4.3.3 to 5.0.1 with redsn0w).

I’ve tried absolutely every single procedure (manually changing the root to apple.iBooksFix, installing both iBooksFix and iBooksFix2 from Cydia, downloading older versions from Installous, etc). Non of them had worked until today I tried downloading the file linked on this page and followed the 3 steps installing it with iFile. It worked like a charm!!!! After rebooting it opened perfectly and even synced my ebooks with iTunes!!

Thank you guys!! Now I can continue reading Steve Job’s biography from where I left it 😉

  • not working for me 🙁

    • it seems am missing something…. ok i disabled sync from itunes books tab by tick away sync books button…. but as u said u restart ur phone not only restart the springboard… which will automatically enable the sync book button!!! so why u said u enable sync again later….

am i doing something wrong?! or its just not working for me!

      • Did you clicked Apply (Sync) button after un-ticking books sync? (with iPhone connected)
Did you installed fresh iBooks? (asking just in case)

If it just doesn’t work, try the method with SSH and *.deb package

      • in itunes u mean….
i untick books sync… then if i clicked apply, the sync button will be ticked again :S
        plz help

i feel am doing something silly but not sure what is it loool

      • Sorry man, I have no idea other what’s wrong there 🙁

  • Don’t do it! Syncing with iTunes and your device will not work if you do. Hope there will be a better solution soon.

  • How can i find the root var/root/media/cydia/autoinstall
And what file i dropped inside it ?

i just jailbreaked my iphone to ios 5.0.1.i found that springboard is crasheing.when i try to open any app it just open and closes…any help

  • iBooksFix2 worked flawlessly for me. The site I read recommended deleting official iBooks 1st then applying the fix and rebooting. I was sceptical as I’d read elsewhere you needed to keep the official one too in order for the store to work etc but it works flawlessly. All my books are there, I’ve made new purchases with no problems. The only downside is that this is an older version of iBooks so you don’t have the full screen mode or nighttime reading mode from the latest version :(.

  • Jaik Phantom

or install/update corona and ibooks will work

    • Had real problems. Got it to work in the end.
I already had official iBooks app installed and did not delete it. I ran iBookfix2, then before I did anything else I rebooted. iBooks icon was now gone from my iPad. I went to app store and download app again – everything working fine

    ibooksfix2 really worked! thank u!

  • the Download link dosnt work 🙁
