For the past few weeks, we’ve been showing you how to access some handy features in iOS 5. We’ve shown you how to create text shortcuts, and how to look up word definitions using iOS’ system-wide dictionary.

Now we’re going to show you how to mark multiple emails as read in iOS 5. This wasn’t something you could do before in iOS 4 without a jailbreak tweak, but it’s easy to do in the latest version of Apple’s mobile OS…

Start by opening up your Mail app.

Step 1. Select the inbox that you want to use, or if you want to do this across multiple accounts, select All Inboxes.

Step 2. Tap Edit in the top right hand corner of the app, and select the emails that you want to mark as read.

Step 3. Tap the Mark button in the bottom right hand corner, and select the Mark as Read option.

That’s all there is to it. Obviously, this wasn’t the most advanced tip in the world, but it could make your day if you didn’t know that it existed.

Bonus tip: This also works for marking multiple emails as unread, too.

Theres a tweak in cydia that allows you to mark all without having to tap each individual email..

  • How can I select all messages at once, without have to select one by one?

  • I have 955 unread emails – because I set up a new iPhone, how do I select all the emails? Mark Read seems to not be getting an update for iOS5 and I am screwed, not gonna select almost 1K mails

  • Try AllMail on Cydia, not free but gets the job done with lots of other features too. Another option is Mail Rules on Cydia – u can setup rules which allow you to mark messages as read when they enter your inbox, again not free though. I’m using AllMail on my iPad2 and it works fine 🙂

  • Select edit.
    Select one email
Hold the Mark button then deselect the email
Press the Mark As Read button and it will mark all as unread.

    • Thanks Dave! I just noticed you posted your answer a mere 17 minutes ago. I had just started looking for this solution!

This feature should really be in the next iOS update.

      • True – we shouldn’t have to be scouring the internet to find simple fixes for $500 items! 🙂
