First gameplay video of Oceanhorn 2 looks fantastic

The official sequel to Oceanhorn: Monster of Uncharted Seas is in the works and we already showed you a few screenshots taken from an early build of the game. Tuesday, developer Cornfox & Bros. shared the official gameplay video of the Oceanhorn sequel, titled Oceanhorn 2: Knights of the Lost Realm.

While still work in progress, the new gameplay footage clearly demonstrates that Oceanhorn 2 is shaping up to become one of the best-looking iPhone and iPad games on the market.

That's hardly a surprise given it's based on Epic's fantastic Unreal Engine 4.

“With Unreal Engine 4, we have hundreds of man years of video game development backing us up,” developers said. The gameplay video, embedded below, is actual unedited footage of Oceanhorn 2 captured on iPhone 7 Plus.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YRp5_TvU3oI

Your hero's journey will take him around the world.

The game sports a vast world map littered with fields, forests, mountains, water, towns and dungeons. An updated battle system consists of sword fighting, utilizing powerful spells and finding creative ways to use various items that you discover along the way.

Oceanhorn 2's main protagonist lives near an ancient structure, called Beacon, located in Arne Village, which is the starting location of his adventures.

To help players solve complex puzzles, lure enemies into traps or cast directed spells at them, Oceanhorn 2 introduces a cool gun that shoots magical projectiles. As a bonus, your character can carry and throw all sorts of objects.

Developers will be demoing Oceanhorn 2 at Epic's booth at the Nordic Game conference in Malmö, Sweden.

Although Oceanhorn released in September 2016 on PS4 and Xbox One as Cornfox's very first console game, it was ported over to iOS and Android. Just recently, the original Oceanhorn game has been confirmed as coming to the PS Vita handheld console on May 17.

The sequel is still in development, but we'll be making sure to keep you in the loop.

New Apple patent highlights potential Siri integration with Messages

The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) today published an interesting patent application filed for by Apple, which indicates that the Cupertino company might be exploring much deep integration between the Siri personal assistant and its iMessage message platform.

Titled “Intelligent automated assistant in a messaging environment”, the company's patent application proposes chatbot-style Siri functionality within the context of the Messages app for those times when using voice-based interactions would be impractical, like in noisy environments such as libraries, movie theaters and so forth.

The patent application appears to be an enhanced version of Apple's prior invention, titled “Virtual assistant in a communication session,” filed for last year and outlining basic Siri-Messages integration via bot-style commands.

Today's patent application includes deep Siri integration with audio, video and image files, as well as with deep links to websites/apps and more. The system could potentially permit users to use image and video recognition with Siri, asking the personal assistant to, say, send an image of a Volkswagen Beetle to a contact or return a text-based web answer.

Siri cannot process images in its current form.

Other image-related queries could include “Where is this?”, “What insect is this?”, “Which company uses this logo?” and more. Siri would be able to remember user preferences and data, too. In one embodiment, a user sends a picture of a bottle of wine and says, “I like this wine” to have Siri remember this preference.

She would also be able to store custom text for later retrieval.

Lastly, Apple proposes chatbot-like functionality where the AI-driven assistant would offer its services to chat participants in a manner not unlike the AI assistant in Facebook's Messenger app. The system could intelligently provide relevant information in the text form about stuff like a nearby restaurant while being able to suggest transportation options and even create an entry in each chat participant's calendar about an upcoming meeting.

Here's an excerpt from the patent abstract:

User input can be received and in response to receiving the user input, the user input can be displayed as a first message in the GUI. A contextual state of the electronic device corresponding to the displayed user input can be stored. The process can cause an action to be performed in accordance with a user intent derived from the user input. A response based on the action can be displayed as a second message in the GUI.

Siri currently includes a feature that allows you to edit your queries by typing, but it's not very practical as it's only available after the user has initially issued a voice-based command to the personal assistant.

Apple's technology, assuming it sees the light of day, would permit users to review previous Siri interactions in a chronological format. Today's patent application was first filed for in May 2016 and credits Apple engineers Petr Karashchuk, Tomas A. Vega Galvez and Thomas R. Gruber as its inventors.

Amazon unveils $230 Echo Show with 7-inch touchscreen, video calling & more

Amazon today added a new smart home device to its range of Echo-branded smart speakers. Dubbed Echo Show, it has all of the features of the basic Echo system, and then some more. The $230 device resembles a tablet with a built-in speaker and a seven-inch touchscreen.

Thanks to a built-in camera and Amazon's video technology, users can make hands-free video calls to other Echo Show owners or to the people who use Amazon's mobile Alexa app.

But first, check out the promotional video for Echo Show.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WQqxCeHhmeU

The addition of a touchscreen marks a new direction for Amazon's Echo family of smart speakers, which up until today supported voice-only interactions.

The touchscreen lets you swipe through photos, view weather forecasts, edit shopping lists and reminders, watch YouTube clips, check out video flash briefings, see music lyrics, watch video feeds from their smart home security cameras, including Ring and Arlo, and more.

Echo Show helps keep you organized at home. Start a timer in the kitchen and watch as it counts down, or easily see your family’s calendar.

Sign in to the Alexa App to take your to-do and shopping lists with you. Just add an item to the list from home, and whoever is out shopping will see it added instantly on their Alexa App.

With smart home control, you can use your voice to interact with smart home accessories like Philips Hue bulbs, Ecobee thermostats, Wink smart home accessories and more.

On the hardware front, Echo Show features Dolby-powered speakers with “crisp vocals and dynamic bass response”, plus eight microphones with beam-forming and noise cancellation that work in conjunction with Amazon's reliable far-field voice recognition technology to let the device hear the user from anywhere in the room, even while playing music.

A Drop In feature is also interesting, as per Amazon:

You can also enable a new feature called Drop In for the special cases when you want to connect with your closest friends and family. For example, you can drop in to let the family know it’s time for dinner, see the baby’s nursery, or check in with a close relative.

Amazon Echo Show is available to pre-order in Black and White for $230.

Amazon is sweetening the deal for those who'd purchase two Echo Show devices at once by allowing them to save $100 off of their order (use the promo code “Show2Pack” at checkout).

The new Echo Show will start shipping to customers June 28.

Amazon may launch its video streaming app for Apple TV in the summer

After pulling all Apple TV hardware from Amazon.com in December 2015 because it didn't “interact well” with its video-subscription service, online retail giant Amazon has at long last warmed up to the idea of permitting owners of Apple's set-top box to use its service.

Recode reported Friday that the two companies are “close to an agreement” that would bring Amazon's Video app to Apple TV in the third quarter of the year, possibly coinciding with the introduction of a next-generation Apple TV with support for 4K video streaming and more.

“It’s unclear what got the two companies to reach an agreement, though some industry observers suggest that any pact would have been worked out, at a high level, by CEOs Tim Cook and Jeff Bezos,” said Recode.

That app would let Amazon Prime Video subscribers watch TV shows and movies directly on their Apple TV set-top box without having to use AirPlay.

It's unclear if Apple TV hardware will be returning to Amazon.com anytime soon and whether or not the two tech giants might have settled other disputes involving their rival video ambitions.

Last year, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos said why they stopped selling Apple TVs:

We want our player, our Prime Video player, to be on the device, and we want it to be on the device with acceptable business terms. And so, you can always get the player on the device; the question is can you do so with acceptable business terms.

And if you can’t, then we don't want to sell it to our customers, because they’re going to be buying it thinking they can watch Prime Video and then they’re going to be disappointed. And they’re going to return it.

Currently, Apple TV owners and Prime members must use AirPlay to wirelessly send movies and TV shows to their Apple TV via Amazon's pretty limited Prime Video app for iOS, which still won't let you buy or rent individual programs without visiting Amazon.com first.

“As we have already succeeded in developing an app for iPhone and iPad, we hope to make an app separately for the Apple TV,” said the online retailer a year and a half ago.

The app was supposed to release before the end of 2015, but negotiations between the two tech giants obviously took a lot longer than expected.

Earlier this year, Apple hired Amazon's former Fire TV chief to head up its Apple TV business.

Meanwhile, Amazon’s shopping app is available on the fourth-generation Apple TV with purchasing support for Prime members and other features.

Windows are being installed along the outside of the main Apple Park building

Following recent aerial footage of Apple Park from videographer Matthew Roberts, drone pilot Duncan Sinfield has now released his birds-eye video of Apple's upcoming 175-acre campus. Like Matthew's clip from two days ago, Sinfield's video reveals that the Cupertino company is continuing to put the final touches on the main ring-shaped building.

You can tell they're doubling down on landscaping work, which involves planting mature trees around the site. The massive pile of the earth continues to shrink on a daily basis, but don't expect it to disappear completely until all that dirt has been reused for landscaping.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5OS1d06QWqk

The solar panel roof looks complete and windows are now being installed alongside the outside of the main building. We can also see progress being made at the Steve Jobs Theater, a 1,000-seat underground auditorium named after Apple's late co-founder.

Other structures, including parking garages, secure research and development facilities, a fitness center for employees and a visitor kiosk, seem to be nearing completion—especially R&D centers that have appeared fully functional for several weeks now.

First employees supposedly began moving in last month, but it's going to take a while until Apple Park becomes a new home for a total of 13,000 employees.

“Closer to home, we're excited about moving into our new corporate headquarters, Apple Park, our new center for innovation,” said Apple CEO Tim Cook earlier in the week on a conference call discussing his company's latest quarterly results with analysts and investors.

“The main building on Apple Park is designed to house 13,000 employees under one roof in an environment that fosters even greater collaboration among our incredibly talented team.”

Apple’s social video editing app Clips gains new feature in first update since launch

Apple yesterday pushed the first update to Clips for iPhone and iPad following the software's debut on App Store nearly a month ago. Bumped to version 1.0.1, Clips packs in improvements to the Live Title feature that lets you create animated captions and titles in 36 different languages using your voice.

Apple says you can now tap on Live Title text while playing or paused to edit it manually in case Siri misheard you. Additionally, when you share your edited video to a contact who has multiple messaging addresses in your address book, the app will now suggest the most frequently used address.

Lastly, the stability and reliability when capturing and sharing videos that contain certain posters have been improved in this edition of the app.

Clips is compatible with iPhone 5s and later, 9.7-inch iPad (2017), all iPad Air and iPad Pro models, iPad mini 2 and later and sixth-generation iPod touch.

The app requires iOS 10.3 or later and does not work on 32-bit devices.

For more on Clips, check out our walkthrough video included above. Clips was introduced as part of a flurry of Apple's Spring product refreshes in March.

Drone footage reveals Apple Park is starting to come together

Apple announced a month ago that its futuristic new $5 billion headquarters in Cupertino, California would be named Apple Park. New drone footage from videographer Matthew Roberts now shows that Apple Park is finally starting to come together although some sections are still under construction.

Although first employees began moving in last month, construction workers will be finalizing landscaping and putting additional finishing touches around the new campus until year-end.

Clockwise: huge tunnels leading underneath the main building, the visitor kiosk, a fitness center for employees and the main entrance to the underground 1,000-seat theater for press events.

Apple has been able to plant a lot of mature trees around the campus over the past few weeks and has reused most of the massive pile of the earth it dug up for landscaping work .

The main ring-shaped building, large enough to house 13,000 employees, is being finalized as we speak. And now, watch the latest birds-eye video of Apple Park from Matthews.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mFhcnzSmH-E

Other facilities are nearing completion as well.

Aside from the main ring-shaped building, other nearly-finished facilities include the Tantau Avenue parking garage above ground plus the massive parking garages below ground, the secure research and development centers found on the outskirts of the campus, the kiosk for visitors and tourists and the giant tunnels running underneath the main building.

Solar panel installations on the roof appear mostly complete.

On the other hand, there are some unfinished structures on the site but they're expected to be completed in a matter of weeks. As mentioned, some sections of the main building have been open to employees since the beginning of April.
