AT&T: We’re Not Happy With Our Network

The chief executive of AT&T wireless, Ralph De La Vega, stated that the nation's largest carrier wasn't "happy" with its network. In an interview at the All Things Digital conference, Ralph De La Vega talked about how AT&T is trying to "reduce static" with its customers and help build a more reliable wireless network.

In light of the carrier's consistently poor consumer ratings, it's clear that something needs to be done to beef up AT&T. Most notably, AT&T is in the process of buying its smaller competitor, T-Mobile, for $39 billion...

Despite launching on Verizon just this February, one analyst believes Apple could be about to ditch the carrier for a second time and launch its next iPhone with 4G compatibility on AT&T only.

Although the iPhone 4 was already 7 months old when it launched on the Verizon network, Apple still went to great lengths to keep the CDMA version of the device a secret. Learning from its mistakes it made with the iPhone 4 prototype last year, Apple set strict rules and implemented tight security measures to ensure it didn't happen again.

Verizon staff weren't authorized to field test the device until just two weeks before its launch, after signing non-disclosure agreements promising they wouldn't let details slip. Those entrusted to test the device weren't allowed to call it an "iPhone" – it was given the code-name "ACME" and that's what it had to be called…

Stacey Higginbotham got a tour of AT&T's Foundry space in Plano, Texas on Wednesday. Not only did the GigaOM author get to rub elbows with the carrier's SVP of application and service infrastructure John Summers, she also got to witness their LTE in action.

LTE stands for Long Term Evolution and has been a popular choice for 4th generation technology among wireless carriers. Verizon deployed their LTE service late last year, and other than a few hiccups, the service has been widely popular. So how will AT&T stack up?

Big Red's Chief Financial Officer Fran Shammo is no stranger to leaking iDevice information. You might recall the comments he made last month during Verizon's quarterly earnings call, claiming that Apple's next smartphone would be a global device.

Verizon to Kill the Unlimited Data Plan

Remember when the Verizon iPhone first came out? One of the most compelling reason to switch was the unlimited data plan that big red offered to its new iPhone customers. This really was just a scheme to reel AT&T users in as it was clear that Verizon had no plan to offer unlimited data for too long.

LTE-Enabled iPhone Won’t Be Seen Until 2012

Following other reports that Apple won't introduce an LTE-enabled iPhone until at least 2012, Digitimes has chimed in to affirm that there won't be an iPhone introduced with 4G speeds this year.

Besides the fact that Apple stated it wasn't planning on LTE adoption in the near future, the industry has indicated that bringing 4G to the iPhone simply isn't feasible right now. After the fifth generation iPhone is released this fall, it is expected that the sixth generation iPhone will have LTE support in 2012.

Will the Next iPhone Be Called ‘4G’?

Will Apple call the next gen iPhone the 4G? Most have been calling the unannounced device the iPhone 5, but recent reports speculate that Apple could end up calling it the 4s (like the 3GS).

AT&T has changed its 4G nomenclature to include devices that previously weren't fast enough to be considered "4G." In AT&T's latest series of marketing campaigns, they have started to call slower devices "4G." The devices that are referenced by AT&T posses the same speeds as what is expected from the next iPhone.
